For the new project, incidentally, we are merely “retrofitting” them. Probably changing up some tubing and control mechanisms, cleaning things up a bit, and adding new wiring.

Not sure why we’d need new data sheets for that. Unless the client asked for them. Which I doubt they did. This particular PM loves to over promise.

There's the old saying about the "definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results". I would argue that it can also be the definition of childish stupidity.

I would offer evidence, but I'm firmly against child abuse.

Happy Friday!

Scarab Sages

As always, I'm glad I didn't have to drive to the office today. I even set my second alarm, which is a half-hour later than my normal alarm.

Scarab Sages

Yesterday morning, just before 7 am, I received a Teams message from the new kid. Her badge wouldn't work to get her in the building. So I said I'd be down to let her in and headed that way.

As I was getting off the elevator in the lobby, she came walking over. She asked me if I had some kind of app that opened the door from upstairs. I had to explain to her the doors automatically unlock at 7 am, which it had turned as I was riding down in the elevator.

It was an amusing way to start the day.

Scarab Sages

I also warned her to stay out of the stairwells. If her badge isn't working on the front door, it probably won't work on the stairs either. I'd hate to see her get trapped there. That happened to me when I started.

You'd think they could have figured out a solution by now. It's only been a few years.

Scarab Sages

In a brief bit of casual conversation with the new kid, I found out she was only 24 years old. So, I'm more than twice her age. Damn, I feel old.

I rented an anime movie off Amazon Prime last night (it was somewhere in the neighborhood of $3). It's an older one from '97, called Perfect Blue. Very much a psychological thriller, with some not-so-subtle commentary on the effects of fame. And some questions on what is and is not real. Not the usual type of anime I've seen, but I liked it.

What lead me to it was an article talking about the movie getting a "remastered" treatment. Eventually, it'll be out on 4K physical media. No firm date on that - sometime in (what's left of) 2025 or 2026.

Scarab Sages

After that, I watched the movie Love Hurts. It stars Ke Huy Quan (Short Round from Temple of Doom, Data from The Goonies). The movie itself was....quite horrid. Though it did have a few interesting characters and solid fight scenes.

Scarab Sages

Still, I'm so glad to see Ke Huy Quan having an "in front of the camera" career resurgence. I know he did a lot of work over the years behind the scenes, but I always like him in those earlier roles and am glad to see him getting some renewed (and well-earned) fame for acting.

I saw an article speculating James Mangold's new Paramount deal could negatively impact the Swamp Thing movie he was supposed to be working on for the GunnCU.

Seeing what offerings the GunnCU has already given us, plus the ones it has planned, and considering Mangold's last big movie was a complete dumpster fire, I'd say this is a good thing.

Scarab Sages

Sad to hear....rumors going around that a certain abomination of a TV show on Amazon can't be cancelled without paying a very hefty fine to the estate of a certain deceased author.

So instead, we're stuck with crap for the foreseeable future. I don't like this reality anymore.

Scarab Sages

Huh! Apparently, the discover of the existence of dinosaurs came 25 years after George Washington passed away. So he never knew dinosaurs existed.

Scarab Sages

I am debating what to watch on TV tonight. I have some Halloween themed movies I've acquired since last year, and one of them might be the right thing for tonight.

Scarab Sages

Perhaps the original Halloween. A classic from when I was a wee lad.

Scarab Sages

Or....I've got a collection of like 5 or 6 Vincent Price movies. I could pick one or two of those.

Scarab Sages

A Youtube show I'm watching/listening to is discussing the financial problems of Hollywood. I can't help but recall a quote from Airplane:

"Shanna, they bought their tickets, they knew what they were getting into. I say, let 'em crash."

Scarab Sages

Happy Saturday?!?

Scarab Sages

The main reason I question the potential for happiness of a Saturday is because my routine is being disrupted.

The secondary reason is my stomach is bothering me just enough to make me uncomfortable. That could go away, however.

Scarab Sages

At the start of every school year, the cub scout packs will get new members. Not sure about others, but our district gives them all these model rockets you can put together and launch. The launching can, I suppose, be done on your own. However, there is also Rocket Day.

Today is our district's Rocket Day.

So older scouts and adult leaders will be running Rocket Day at one of the local elementary schools. It runs from 9am to 1pm.

Scarab Sages

While I'm glad to help out, I dislike having my routine disrupted. So I'll be cranky most of the day.

Scarab Sages

I'll most likely put off the comic book store until later this afternoon. Then I'll do my grocery shopping tomorrow.

Scarab Sages

Ye gods! It escaped!

Scarab Sages

As I believe I mentioned before, a pair of my sweatpants have worn out in a rather uncomfortable (for other people) location. So I've been trying to find a new pair.

Walmart has been sadly lacking in the style I like, so two years ago I ordered a pair off Amazon. That pair did not fit properly. Yesterday I went back into my Amazon account to see what kind I had previously ordered, so I wouldn't make the mistake of ordering them again. That's when I realized just prior to ordering that not-fitting pair, I ordered the pair I'm currently wearing. That pair does fit.

So I ordered that same, "does fit" pair in a different color.

And a different style came.

Scarab Sages

I'm going to give this new pair a chance. Unlike the previous bad pair, this one does fit me in the waist. Now it's a question of whether it'll be comfortable enough in other ways.

We shall see.

Scarab Sages

Seriously, though! How hard is it to keep making a style that I prefer, you rat b$%&ards?!?

Scarab Sages

Anyway...

I decided to break out the Vincent Price blu-ray set I purchased a few months back. I watched two movies from the set.

Pit and the Pendulum was first. I'd seen that before. It's a Roger Corman directed adaptation of Poe. He and Price did several of these. It also had the great Barbara Steele.

The second movie was The Abominable Doctor Phibes. I had never seen that before, but had heard about it. It was.....weird, but entertaining. The movie was set in 1925 England, but some of the decor was clearly from the 50s and 60s. That was a little off-putting.

Scarab Sages

Revisiting that bit about Amazon having to pay a fee if it cancels any of the remaining seasons of Rings of Power. I seriously doubt that's what is stopping them from cancelling, considering the fee is reportedly only $20 million per episode. I'd bet good money that each season of that abomination costs the studio way more than the $60 million it might cost them to cancel whatever is left.

Scarab Sages

At some point, I wish they'd at least consider the mental health of actual Tolkien fans. You'd think they could do that after getting rid of that woman who started this blasphemy.

Scarab Sages

Ugh...time to go get ready for the event. At least we've got cooler temperatures and what looks to be some cloud cover.

Scarab Sages

Well, at least I get to sit comfortably in the shade, with a nice breeze blowing. And my brother, his wife, and two girls are here. So it’s nice to see them.

Scarab Sages

Watching the model rockets launch reminds me - I own an engineering drawing of the first stage Saturn 5 rocket. This is from my father’s time working for NASA as an electrical technician.

I bought a frame for it at Walmart years ago, but now I’m considering having it professionally framed at the same place I had my Kelley Jones Dracula art. This way it can have a nice frame AND get some UV protection.

Scarab Sages

Turns out….it’s a beautiful day in the neighborhood. The weather is actually quite pleasant. The crowds are decent (not too heavy). And everyone is having fun and being polite (that’s the awesomeness of Southern Hospitality).

Scarab Sages

Speaking of awesome….

My coworker recently became aware of Hymel’s Kajun Kitchen. The dude who runs it is kind of like a younger, less awesome but more tech savvy version of Justin Wilson. The dude puts up videos of cooking, and has some of his own products.

So my coworker bought some of us Hymel’s Baw, Dat Good, Yeah! Cajun seasoning. The seasoning is not half bad. Haven’t watched any of the videos. When it comes to Cajun cuisine, I’ve already got plenty of recipes and cookbooks.

Scarab Sages

Incidentally, all that led me to a discussion with my coworker on the simple fact that Louisiana, for all its (many) faults, had the best cuisine of any other state. That is a simple, unarguable truth. Anyone who thinks differently is absolutely wrong.

Scarab Sages

My brother’s girl troop is running the concession stand. They ordered a bunch of pizza to sell for lunch. So I sent the boy over with $5 to get himself a combo: slice of pizza, drink, chips.

I might get a slice of pizza. My stomach might be able to handle it. I had two donuts earlier without a problem.

Scarab Sages

Tired zombie is tired. That Rocket Day took a lot out of me. Especially towards the end, as the day got a bit warmer. Still, it was nice.

I was a bit saddened seeing one youngster who lost his rocket after it was launched. The wind must have taken it and they never found it. Poor kid was bawling his little eyes out.

Scarab Sages

So then we got home sometime shortly after 1pm. I showered, then went out to the comic book store. My daughter came with me, which was nice. Especially since I forgot my glasses at home and needed her to be my eye for details in the store.

Scarab Sages

We got back home about quarter to three. Just before snack time. I had coffee for my snack, since I missed my 1pm coffee.

Scarab Sages

Sometimes, pathetic little kids just gotta be pathetic little kids. Ain’t much you can do except ignore them. It’s the attention they want.

Scarab Sages

Speaking of attention hungry….

Crazy dog is doing all but laying on top the wife to try and get her attention.

Scarab Sages

Happy Sunday?!?

Scarab Sages

Maybe a bit. Tempered, sadly, by the knowledge that tomorrow is the dreaded Monday.

Scarab Sages

I stayed up too late again last night, watching two more Vincent Price movies from that blu-ray collection I had purchased. This time it was The Haunted Palace and The House of Usher.

Scarab Sages

Technically, Haunted Palace is another of the Poe movies done by Corman. However, it's really more inspired by Lovecraft's The Strange Case of Charles Dexter Ward. Still, it had two horror movie legends: Price and Lon Chaney Jr.

Scarab Sages

House of Usher was cool. I don't think I had ever seen it before. If I had, it was a long time ago. Price looked really weird as a platinum blond.

Scarab Sages

Going back to Lovecraft's Dexter Ward story. There was a movie inspired by and (very) loosely adapted from that story which came out decades ago. It's called The Resurrected. It starred John Terry and Chris Sarandon.

The movie was originally intended for a theatrical release, but never got there. Instead, it ended up direct-to-video. I remember seeing it once on TV, years ago, and loving it.

I discovered a 4K edition of the movie on Amazon recently. It said the release date would be 28 October. So I've got that preordered.

Scarab Sages

I also spent a bit of time playing Diablo 2 Resurrected on the PS5 last night. Just for the hell of it.

Scarab Sages

Not much planned for today. I'll do the grocery shopping I missed yesterday. Then more laundry. I'll try to do some more cataloging and reading as well.

Scarab Sages

As I mentioned previously, I saw my brother, his wife, and daughters at Rocket Day yesterday. The older of my two nieces, and my godchild, is a junior in high school but already starting to look at colleges.

She's got a eye towards Equine Veterinary Medicine, and is looking at two colleges here in (THE GREAT STATE OF) Texas. So my brother and his wife are taking her to visit those schools when the district has their fall break. That'll be not this week, but the following week.
