Still no power at home, but there was a (very) small glimmer of hope. On my drive in this morning, I discovered the first intersection east of my subdivision entrance had power.
So that's some measure of progress. However small.
The company that owns most of the infrastructure, and is thus responsible for repairs, has been...less than admirable in their efforts.
It's not that they're not working hard. It's that there's a distinct lack of communication.
For example, no one has yet to explain why a mere Cat 1 hurricane, which came and went like an errant summer breeze (seriously, it hit us overnight between Monday and Sunday, and we had sunshine by late Monday afternoon), did so much damage.
If only there were some way for the company to communicate with we mere commoners.
So now it's Friday. Typically, this would have been my new Work from Home day. However, the boss of the group requested that anyone who couldn't work from home due to power/internet outages, please come into the office.
Barring more important circumstances, of course.
Since I would have just been sitting on my butt at home.....
I did order a generator from Amazon yesterday. It won't get here until the 1st of August, though. Hopefully, we'll have power by then, but you never know.
At least I'll be prepared for the next power outage. They seem to be happening with greater frequency, and for much longer periods.
I have my theories on that, mostly regarding Texas being a victim of its own success.
Anyway, this new generator is portable (theoretically), and takes three different kinds of fuel: gasoline, propane, and natural gas.
Of course, gasoline is the best fuel to use. You get more bang for your buck, so to speak. However, in an emergency situation gasoline and propane can be a bit harder to come by. Whereas I have a natural gas hook up in my back yard.
So next time, I should at the very least have enough juice to power the refrigerator and some fans, and to keep items charged.
All without having to suck juice from my neighbor.
I suppose. Other people are starting to get here, anyway.
Just heard a rumor one of the big reasons for the delay in repairs is union reps for out of state workers trying to negotiate better deals with CenterPoint.
Can't say I'd be surprised they care more about getting a better deal than they do about helping people. It makes me appreciate the selflessness of people like the Cajun Navy a bit more.
For the first time in forever, I’m actually sad it’s the weekend. No excuse to go into work, sit in the AC, and enjoy coffee and internet.
And the wife and I are both starting to have stomach issues. Which is oh so pleasant.
Then again, I was already having stomach issues. So nothing new there.
Difference is, someone has to at least appear to be healthy and take care of the kids and dog. We’ve got no one else to rely on at the moment.
And I don’t even know if the comic book store is open.
I can at least go to the grocery store.
But I’ll have to go on a quest for ice first. Need a way to keep things beyond a day.
Dammed power company. Dammed government. Dammed unions.
And damned Mother Nature. Let’s not forget that one.
They’re all to blame, and they all suck.
But, hey! At least it’s cloudy. And we’re supposed to get rain today.
Which……isn’t very good for the solar powered charger keeping our phones alive.
I might need to find a pet friendly hotel. Like I suggest to the wife earlier this week.
I have had no coffee today. Not happy.

BY ALL THAT’S HOLY AND UNHOLY!!!!
WE FINALLY HAVE POWER BACK!!!!!!
It’s been a long 6 days.
It’s so nice to have AC and lights again.
And I never thought I could actually be excited about getting to wash a load of clothes.
Of course, we’ll have to hit the grocery store again today. When I went yesterday morning it was with the idea that we wouldn’t have a fridge in which to store leftovers.
Meanwhile, idiots on both sides of the aisle are out there having exactly the kind of freak out we don’t need at the!moment.
The power company down here, CenterPoint, is deservedly catching some crap. For one, they reportedly lied when they initially said they had 12,000 people on the job. I’m sorry, but 8,000 traveling don’t count as “on the job”. And they also claim they had everyone ready to go before the storm even hit, but that’s proving to be a lie as well.
What do you expect from a company whose CEO is a reject from California?
There’s also word the “judge” in charge of Harris County was pretty much asleep on the job, so to speak. Wouldn’t surprise me. She’s always come across as an incompetent, power-hungry lunatic.
The mayor of Houston, on the other hand, had his s@$t together, by all accounts.
Good for him.
This morning I’m debating whether to try and make a run for the comic book store. I’ll try to call first. If I can’t get through to the store (which has been the case the last few days), I won’t even bother.
Anyway, I’m thrilled to be alive and back with power in my house. Just in time to return to the grind tomorrow.
Now I can get back to the normal routine of trying to fix all the other problems in my life.

Or at least mitigating the damage from said problems.
Ugh! Not internet or network connections here at work this morning. So my trip in was completely wasted.
The only reason I'm connected at the moment is my personal hotspot on the phone. Never used it before, but it's convenient.
And I didn't even get to bed until nearly 11:30 last night. Was over at my brother's house until about 20 minutes to 10, then watched HotD.
And then my a-hole dog woke me up at quarter to 4 this morning so I could take her out to pee.
So I've already had three cups of coffee this morning.
