Ring of Sustenance: are you still 'hungry'?

Rules Questions

Looking for other interpretations of the rings "life-sustaining nourishment". In your games does it mean:

A) you don't need food, so you also don't feel any need for food at all

or

B) you don't HAVE to eat, but you'd still feel the desire/want to eat, even if only for the sensory experiences or possibly the routine/habit of eating.

Thoughts?
A or B?

A. The ring feeds you, so you never get hungry. I suppose you might still crave a chocolate bar every once in a while.

A

As a player, I like B (because Chrono Trigger), but I'd never let it extend to any mechanical concern. As a GM, though, this is solely in the purview of the player, as it represents the character's inclinations and feelings and (barring mind-affecting spells and the like) such things are the privilege of the player. By default, make it A and let the player decide if his gluttonous character is just dying for a frickin' hamburger.

If you're the GM, a "but you're still hungry...." ring could be the result of a flawed item creation (basically a minor curse on the item).

I would say you're not hungry, but you might get cravings for things. The feeling of hunger, and the desire to have ice cream are two very different and not mutual things.

Thanks everyone. So far 3 votes for A, 1 vote for B. I'd like to have 10 responses for a decent sample.

I'd say B, based upon The Misenchanted Sword. But by that I don't mean ravenous, just a little hungry all the time.

I'm with Claxon - you don't need to eat, and don't feel hungry, but you can eat if you want to, and might eat for the pleasure of it. There would probably be a period of adjustment while you get out of the habit of eating before your body realize it no longer has to. I guess that's closer to B than to A.

Man, magic is weird. Completely removing one of your body's core drives would do all kinds of funny things.

Dr. Death, what's 'The Misenchanted Sword?'

"The Misenchanted Sword: A Legend of Ethshar
Book by Lawrence Watt-Evans
4.5/5-Barnes & Noble"

As for me, A, but you might still get cravings for specific foods.

The more I think about it, the more impressive a ring of sustenance is. Sleeping two hours a night and not needing to eat or drink should make you go ABSOLUTELY NUTS in a couple of weeks at most. That bears no resemblance at all to anything your body is supposed to be doing.

Magic!

But yeah I'm with others on A. There might be some psychological effects similar to hunger, like how some people stress-eat. But no real hunger pains.

A question I've asked concerning rings of sustenance is: if you just wear the ring and don't eat anything more, do you poop? Well, excrete and urinate? I mean, it is a serious question. You would for a little while at least, but after a while ... ? Is the ring giving you just enough nutrients with no waste, straight into your bloodstream or something, or is it somehow materializing foodstuffs in your belly and all the normal processes apply? Healthy kidneys at least require them to be operating, right? Or will the magic of the ring make them just start to shrivel up inside you into useless beans?

These are the questions that haunt my mind.

A vote for "ask your Game Master." If I'm the Game Master in question, A. Otherwise we have the question of why everyone wearing such a ring doesn't weigh four hundred pounds -- and I'm talking about the gnomes here.

So many questions!

If are overweight when you start wearing a ring of sustenance, and stop eating entirely, do you stay overweight? Does the ring produce more energy to maintain you where you are when you put it on?

Zathyr, my vote is that you don't have to deal with nature's call any more after a period of, uh, adjustment.

We're down the rabbit hole here, people!

"Magic." "A wizard did it." If I'm going to design a magic ring to keep people healthy without eating, it should damn well keep people healthy without eating, yes?

Hence, no kidney problems, no constipation, no issues with weight gain.

Which argues for "A," at least in any game I run.

Honestly? A. B is useful for torture, though.

A, definitely.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

A.

The thing to remember is there is a difference between "hunger" (a physical craving for food) and "appetite" (a psychological desire for food).

The ring magically meets your body's desire for food, therefore it is never hungry. One might still have an appetite for food, having cravings for particular types of food that are purely psychological.

I think A.

You don't feel hunger, but of course hunger isn't required to eat, so you could still eat. You might think certain foods sound good, or get bored and snack, but you wouldn't feel hunger.

As to the rest, I almost shudder to ask, but does anyone actually track "waste removal" in their games? If not, knowing if a magic ring keeps you from having to potty is irrelevant.

Definitely B. I've played quite a lot of WoD and I have a fondness for the dehumanizing effects of deprivation, and all the great storylines that spring from thirst and hunger (of all sorts).

In Kingmaker, my LN wizard has one, but has never worn it. He regards it as "unnatural" and possibly an offense against the gods. He keeps it around though, in case he needs to make a long, dangerous journey. You might say he prefers eating and sleeping.

I wish everyone on the forum were rp-oriented. Such a neat little magic item this is.

Yeah, it's a great item especially given the 2,500gp cost. That being said, a lot of campaigns seem to hand waive rations especially at higher Levels. Sleep can also be something that gets fast forwarded. So in fairness, you're using up 1 of your 2 Ring slots to avoid aspects that some games regard as mundane, consider record keeping, & just ignore.

Since I frequently find myself in the kitchen looking for a snack even though I am not hungry...

I am going to go with A, no hunger, BUT you do get the munchies every now and then. Cause sometimes, you just need to chew something.

Pathfinder Lost Omens Subscriber

A. but the bare minimum

Check out Classic Treasures Revisited, (PZO9220) page 27 bottom for an awesome example of a 'typical' magic item with a very well-written RP backstory.

A: no hunger.

Dark Archive

Most definitely B.
I like the description of a similar long time sustenance spell in a Nifft the Lean story.
