I was thinking about the "Great Catastrophe" that Lee Hammock talked about in the Gobbocast, and I had two ideas that I would like to put forth, and get a general reaction.
First Idea:
Since the World Wound is to the North West a large group of demons ravages the Echo woods. Afterwards, Crusaders, Hell Knights(Pyke), and opportunists begin to move in and help remove the threat. Us, the players, will be displaced and have to rebuild the settlements.
Second Idea:
A large group of Barbarians from Numeria attempts to push the Numerian border further south, burning, raping, and pillaging along the way. The PCs, Thornkeep, Hell Knights, and maybe even some Goblin/Bandits all help to push the Barbarians out, but are left to rebuild.

I really like "the Great Burning" Perhaps a micro-meteor bombardment, maybe even leading to the creation of a new and interesting encounter point in one of the future-expansion badlands hexes.
Could even lead to some interesting confusion via a sudden "mass-regeneration" in game.

A battle between Rovagug and Pharasma, where Rovagug's scourge gains the early victory of destroying many of the NPC settlements, but Pharasma wins the day by granting the new stewards of the River Kingdoms with the ability to respawn, thus driving away the scourge of Rovagug, and then the rebuilding begins.

Caldeathe Baequiannia wrote:...micro-meteor bombardment...Any chance the Great Catastrophe will be what creates the Starmetal hexes in the River Kingdoms? That'd allow a somewhat-simple way to accommodate the map's resources and the needs of the GW-folk behind the scenes.
This is exactly what I was thinking.
If another smaller 'ship' crashed into the river kingdoms.

Well those are cause of being close to Numeria, so sort of already explained.
Some sources talk about Skymetal having long-since been exhausted in at least some Numerian sites, so I wondered whether the same fate might've befallen ancient River Kingdoms sites, and thus maybe we need a new infusion?

Couldn't they open their eyes and see.
Zog and the goblins were to blame for any harm that would befall the rift. They had created the rift in an accident - and they still played around with it - like gods.
Fools - all of us who trusted Rhyn and settled in these lands - still with goblins work(ing) on it.
Couldn't they see that the forces creating the rift just needed to do something wrong - inevitable if you trusted goblins - and catastrophes on worldwide proportions like earthquakes or even the apocalypse could happen.

But won't we already be able to respawn? The GCat is supposed to take place at the end of EE.

Sorry, snorted when I read this. Been a comic book reader since way back. When I read the words "Great Catastrophe" I automatically think about Jack Kirby's Kamandi comic book. Which was something of a rip-off of Planet of the Apes but multiple animal species became intelligent while human intelligence declined.
I like the barbarian horde swept through idea. There's also the idea of a comet passing so close to the planet that it caused earthquakes and fires all over the place.

Not addressing the respawn part of your comment, but the GCat is supposed to take place when they are ready for us to take over settlements ourselves. Until then, all settlements will effectively be NPC operated.
It's to allow training facilities throughout the map, while giving us the freedom to decide what we want in our hexes when take them over.

On the subject of meteors and Scarred Lands: I really hope there'll be akatas at some point.

Well for me personally, part of the reason I wanted to be north was because of the World Wound incursion potential. I would of also liked being by the Spire, but it looks like that's a long way out to being something anyways. Will still love to visit just to see what's there now however.

The settlement hexes are precisely spaced out and placed. So no, you won't be able to rebuild in a neighboring hex.
This.
They are constructing much of the gameworld I assume, and I don't think "dropping a settlement" is fesable, say in the middle of a swamp, forest, highland, or even plains hex; It would end in tears and bugs galore.
As I understood it, he meant the "ruins" are available for fixing and controlling, each specifically setup for the "Guild" that won the location in the Land-Rush. At some time later the other "devastated" NPC towns that went up will also become available for fixing and controlling.

I like that--very Golarion!

Razmiran has expanded on 5 different occasions in the last 50 years, and as they are right on the other side of the Sellen River and were a River Kingdom themselves at one point, I think it would make perfect sense for them to be attempting an expansion once again. I can see them sending their Shackleborn, fanatic priests and army to take things over. The populace of the River Kingdoms (go us!) fight them back, assume lordship over the remains of the various settlements, and on we go.
