Obtain Familiar & Improved Familiar Requirement Question

3.5/d20/OGL

Hello, question in regard to familiars.
Obtain familiar specifically states: "You can obtain a familiar in the same manner as a sorcerer or wizard (see the sorcerer class description and the accompanying sidebar, page 52 of the Player's Handbook). As with a sorcerer or wizard, obtaining a familiar takes 24 hours and uses up magic materials worth 100 gp"
Is this a one time thing? If my familiar dies, can I obtain another without having to purchase another feat as long as I pay for the materials, etc? Also, I ask because the prerequisite for improved familiar / dragon familiar states this:
ability to acquire a new familiar
Or is this treated similar to summon familiar?
Any help to clarify this would be great. Thanks

The feat says it works the same way as a sorcerer's or wizard's familiar (referencing both the sorcerer class ability and the sidebar). Since their familiars can be replaced, according to the rules for the sorcerer's class ability, the familiar gained via the feat can also be similarly replaced.
