How exactly does bab stack?

Rules Questions

I've been pondering this, my group does only by whole numbers alloted per class,

But is that the actual rule?

I mean, a sorcerer 1/ wizard 1 in my mind should still be learning a trick here or there in fighting, so would that be a 1 BAB or a 0 BAB?

I've been told BAB stacks, but does it stack by whole increments only or no?

That would be a 0.

You take each individual's class's BAB and add them. so if you get two 0's you get a 0.

If you add another 0 BAB class you will be level 3 with a BAB of 0.

Example sorc 1/wiz 1/witch 1= BAB 0

There are variant rules out there for tracking fractional BAB, but, as mentioned, those are a variant rule, not the PF RAW.

So, yes, it is possible, with judicious multi-classing, to get fairly high level and still have a +0 BAB...

That is actually interesting question. BAB calculated as 1/0.75/0.5 per level rounded down, but as far as i know raw says to just pick the number from table.
If player asked i would definately allow fraction stacking, just never thought of it before actually

On the bright side, by the same rule, saves stack just as well.

While I greatly favor fractional BAB and Save progression, doing so is solidly into house ruling territory.

This is how I've always done things. Works with saves, too: you just add up the fractions (1/2 for a "good" save and 1/3 for a "bad" save) and class bonuses. A multi-class rogue 2/ranger 3 for example would have the following base saves: Fort +4 (2 class + [1/3 x 2] + [1/2 x 3]), Ref +4 (2 class + [1/2 x 5]), Will +1 (1/3 x 5).

I allow folks to stack fractions, but that's me. As far as I know, the "raw" of it is to stack the numbers in the tables.

It would seem to me that stacking fractions would greatly encourage players to do an awful lot of dipping into classes they might otherwise avoid due to the 0 BAB at first level.

Don't see that as a problem.

Rudy2, you make it sound like they would otherwise get rewarded for multiclassing, which isn't the case. they'd just not get punished for it in that way.

With the variant rules out, what are the chances that stacking bab will make it into pathfinder society?

Highly unlikely.

Snowball's chance in one of the LE planes.

Fractional BAB is a thing, but not a PFS thing. It's a variant thing in the Unchained book, and is explained here.

A character with the following levels:

Wizard 1/Sorcerer 1/Cleric 1/Druid 1/Rogue 1/Bard 1/Monk 1/Alchemist 1/Inquisitor 1/Magus 1/Oracle 1/Summoner 1/Witch 1/Arcanist 1/Hunter 1/Investigator 1/Shaman 1/Skald 1/Warpriest 1/Commoner 1

Can have a BAB of 0 at 20th level. Granted, no sane GM is going to let you take 20 levels, each in a different class. You can get into the epic levels with this, by taking levels in Adept, Aristocrat, and Expert. Then you can start taking 1/2 and 3/4 BAB prestige classes.

Also, you won't be able to draw your sword as part of a move action.

Considering that Rudy2 hasn't posted anything for over a year, I think you are unlikely to get a response.

I discovered that variant back in 3.5 with Unearthed Arcana. Since then, I not only allow it but I demand it. Anyone in my game who wants to multiclass must use the fractional rules. Otherwise you get this unlogical characters with high saves (due to initial +2 on good saves) and poor bab. It is not only illogical, but it benefits casters over fighters (with medium bab).

I beleive I have read somewhere that, the only reason fractional is not mandatory, is because it would take "too much" effort and may make people to get bored or something. I beleive you dont level up that much so it becomes tedious. Also, when I multiclass, I put the fractional numer of my saves and bab next to the actual valor. So I dont have to think about it all over again.

I have not read the unchained variant, but the one in Unearthed Arcana was quite fair. You could take a look if you have some doubts.

You are wise. We don't do this at our table, wish we did... got one guy who generally has as many classes as he does levels up until around level 6 or so... totally insane saves, mediocre BAB. Then he picks a full BAB class and starts curbstomping everything.

UGH.

This is exactly why you're supposed to round at the end of an equation and not in the middle.

Short term, or long term? Cause it does seem to make a lot of sense...

I doubt they'll use an optional rule that would force all existing characters to do new maths - sadly - because the fractional rules are perfect.
