honestly i would like to see an inherent military style grouping mechanic with an eye towards larger pvp battles.
So standard size would be 5 for a fire team, two fire teams for a platoon....etc. All members in a platoon can see everyone's health bar. you cant see other platoon's status unless you were say a platoon leader or company leader.
So if i was a cleric i can keep tabs on my platoon without any effort, but to check someone not in my platoon i have to click on them. Perhaps platoon or company commanders can have an ability where they can temporally send the bars of someone in another platoon to healers in his company as long as they are within x range of him.
I like the idea that coordination is done through player communication. It forces people to work together and will separate a mob from an army.

Will members of combat units be required to have ranks in the skill soldier for the formation to operate at normal efficiency? (I.e, trained in being in a combat formation)
I can't see how they wouldn't. Who can pick up a pointy stick and work in effective harmony with a group of other people without first working out, "Ok guys this is what we're gonna do" and practicing a while?
Minimal training to be a grunt executing basic maneuvers, more training for more effective maneuvers or defensive abilities. Another offspring skill to be a military leader of a small group at first and at higher levels more units and allow for group buffs over more soldiers.

im of the mind that in general if you are in a formation you shouldnt need any skill that being in a formation and working as a team will provide an inherent bonus.
However i think that there should be formation fighting skills that improve your ability to fight in a formation.
For example you could have phalanx shield skill. this skill would impart a defensive bonus to the person on your left if they were right next to you, but outside of a formation it would do nothing.
So you have a trade off. Do you train in skills that make you able to fight individually well or in skills that let you fight in formation well but weak as a single character? Do you want to be a warrior or a soldier?
