Sawtooth Sabre with two-weapon fighting

Rules Questions

OK, so I'm trying to whip up some Red Mantis assassin enemies for my group with HeroLab, but I don't think the stat block is correct.

Rogue 5 / Red Mantis Assassin 1
Base Atk +3
Dex 20
Feats: Exotic wpn prof, Weapon Finesse, Two-weapon fighting, wpn focus (Sawtooth sabre)
Masterwork sawtooth sabre
Atk +4/+4

Shouldn't this be more?

Base atk +3, Dex +5, Wpn. focus, masterwork should amount to +10, reduced by -2 for two-weapon fighting. What am I missing? And if I am right, why is HeroLab wrong?

Weapon Finesse doesn't apply to Sawtooth Sabres. What's your characters strength?

I don't believe that you can Finesse sawtooth sabres, so what is your strength? Because if its 12 then you would have 3BAB+1Focus+1MWK+1Str-2TWF=+4/+4 attack. I didn't see anything in the PrC allowing you to finesse sawtooth sabres.

EDIT:Ninja'd

12.

I thought it counted as a light weapon if you had exotic wpn proficiency in it, but I now see that it is only a light weapon for purposes of determining two-weapon fighting bonuses.

More or less the same argument that is being discussed now over magic weapons and incorporeality.

Wait, weapon finesse? What is your strength? 12? 13? Yeah, sawtooth sabers are one handed weapons, and unlike with the rapier or other similar weapons, it doesn't grant you the ability to use weapon finesse on it. It is only treated as light for TWF.

So it is BAB (+3) + Wpn Focus (+1) + Masterwork (+1) + STR (+1) + TWF(-2) = +4.

Sorry, but the red mantis style is more suited for rangers it seems. Or those with a balance between STR and DEX.

Edit: Nina'd too. Well, might as well be productive and add the description for sawtooth sabers:

A sawtoothed sabre may be used as a Martial Weapon (in which case it functions as a longsword), but if you have the feat Exotic Weapon Proficiency (sawtoothed sabre), you treat the weapon as if it were a light weapon for the purpose of two-weapon fighting— the sabre remains classified as a one-handed melee weapon for all other purposes.

Sorry, the language is pretty clear here.

The issue with this PrC is that you need too many stats for it.

When making TWF builds, get just enough dex to qualify for the feats you want then focus on strength.

Yeah, but assassins need sneak attack to be really effective. Maybe I'm better off going normal assassin and only wielding one sawtooth sabre

Or none.. but that would defeat some of the purpose.

Or take ranger. Maybe a trapper/free booter to still get roguish stuff with traps and get rid of feature like magic and animal companions that wouldn't scale while taking the PrC.

I know, it seems odd to not have sneak attack, but that only has a vague connection with assassination anyway.

Or maybe take vivisectionist alchemist. They have sneak attack, and they can take mutagens to boost their strength. Just get a good Dex and decent Str ( maybe 14 for str and 18 for dex, and then mutagen boosts strength to 18?)

Actually you can do more damage without sneak attack, and going with a power attack based build, but you would have to two-hand it, and in that case you don't need the sawtooth sabre. Just get a longsword and call it a sawtooth. This class despite the name is not a great assassin mechanically.

You would be better off with a ranger, either the core ranger or the guide archetype.

Rangers are also really good at TWF, and you also dont have to worry about charisma.

Well, the good news is it sounds like you are the GM. Meaning, you call the shots. The older version of the Sawtooth Sabre was a finesse weapon... In My game, the NPC RMA's are DEX based Ninjas prior to becoming RMA's. They getter synergy from both classes by focusing on DEX and CHA.

The old version is found in the Curse of the Crimson Throne players guide
