I think preppers get a bad rap.
I'm a former boy scout, farm kid, recreational hiker.
I like the woods.I live in a place that, most years, gets at least one hurricane. We are far enough South that 8 inches of snow shuts down everything for at least 24 hours. Twice in the last 5 years I've gone without household electricity for 5+ days.
My two closest major population centers have major military installations.
I keep some basic "need that" stuff on hand. Including a serious Water filtration system. A .410 shotgun (for squirrels and raccoons in an emergency). Some more than First Aid medical supplies. I have a well as well as a city water hookup. Space blankets, MREs, portable fuel etc.
Also some seed stock that is NOT genetically modified, self replenishes and is designed for long term storage.
I'm not even remotely worried about Zombies, space invaders, Al Qaeda or the seemingly overnight collapse of the entire National, State, County and Municipal governments.
I am aware that our infrastructure is susceptible to Environmental and possibly Viral and Bacteriological events. There's not much wrong with a "just in case" plan. Much like training my kids how to get out of the house if it's on fire. I've planned how to feed my kids if groceries and water aren't moving.
Now the guys who are stockpiling weapons and dry goods in underground bunkers, well they have a hobby, an expensive hobby. Maybe they really think the fit will hit the Shan, maybe they just need an excuse for being grown men who still like to build "forts" and collect weapons. I like both of those myself, but my Paizo budget precludes an underground fortress.
Most preppers are just planning out for inconvenient situations, they don't make for good television though. Just like most Jr Beauty Pageant contestants aren't Honey BooBoo.Also these guys are rookies. A serious Preper would acquire either a decommissioned military or modern Luxury yacht Diesel/Electric Submarine.
This is kinda my take...I am pretty sure that most scenarios are not going to be a "the whole world is different and we must carry on" type of event. I am more or less trying to be ready(ish) if something like the New Orleans disaster or another type of major storm decimated the general area and I need to keep my family rolling for a couple of weeks or so and maybe protect from looters/robbers/rapers.
I am pretty sure that Zombies, EMPs, Solar flares destroying all electronics, and all that stuff is kinda far-fetched but natural disasters hitting an area hard does happen. So I prep for that, not to live forever without society in a post-apocalyptic nightmare.

I'm not a prepper, but I do keep a "bug out bag" ready to grab if I have to hit the road with no notice. In it are two changes of clothing, a pair of hiking boots, a personal care kit (soap, toothbrush, shampoo, etc), a two-month supply of my meds, a first aid kit, a Leatherman multitool, water purification tabs, a box of Cliff bars, three MREs, a towel, a lighter, a set of firestarter sticks, a thermal blanket, and $500 cash. I also keep small tent nearby.

Not a bad start. My current plan revolves around a fairly large bag and a handcart fitted with large offroad tires to keep large tools tent etc.

And if watching The Road doesn't make Pan's solution seem appropriate, then read the book. It's considerably worse in some spots.

Not a prepper by far but I do keep abreast of my surroundings and plan for things to go wrong at least once a day. To that end, I always walk with the following:
Swiss army knife
Allen key(for bike fixing)
chain lubricant (for bike fixing)
Mini flashlight (damn thing is blindingly powerful)
monoscope (for looking around)
Will soon add a zippo and a micro first aid kit to the package. Am considering getting another Swiss army knife or just adding a pocket whetstone. Also getting a little hello kitty water pouch and may also get a pocket fisherman. I also always walk with a toothbrush and deodorant due to biking concerns. May also get a tiny Kubotan stick. Unsure whether or not I should get a bag for this or just a utility belt. :-)

If you're just concerned with something going wrong and aren't concerned with long term survival long after infrastructure is gone, a zippo may not be the best choice. They dry out quickly and if they get doused or leak you can wind up with a chemical burn. However they can burn almost anything and are tough as heck.
Depending on your needs a BIC disposable, a permanent match, a peanut lighter, a magnesium fire striker or some storm matches may do better.
I'd strongly recommend the BIC if you're just looking for a way to start a fire in an emergency.

Skip the zippo and go for a much more reliable butane lighter or if you want harder to use but true reliability get a ferro rod. The sparks will make fire even soaking wet and it doesn't run out or break. may want to carry a little waterproof container of tinder with it though
