As per the title. I have been looking for general advice thread for people to share what they found works and what doesn't work. Also, aside from the obvious 2pp for level 1 wands or level 3 potions, What are good ideas for spending your PP on?
I found this thread on surviving level 1. Great Information, Thanks Jiggy.
This was a Paizo blog about PFS Survival 101.Points out a lot of great consumables.
Great thread about what people will expect from you at the PFS table.
Are there other threads anyone can point me to for more information? Namely i'm looking at what I should be spending my Prestige points on or saving them for. That being said, any tips or information would be nice.
EDIT: Thanks Jiggy agian for pointing out the Painlord thread. Would be nice if something like this was a sticky. Renamed the thread.

The name is the Clear Spindle Ioun Stone Eric.
I would recommend saving your PP for the most part. Maybe grab a wand or two, but otherwise I would wait until you need to use it for some reason or another.
I would also suggest picking up some Spring Loaded Wrist Sheathes for 5 gp. Put a potion or wand in them, just kind of handy. Letting you cure/restoration/darkvision/etc. that round while still having a move is golden.

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

If you do need a raise dead, consider not using prestige for the two restorations if you can afford to pay for them using gold instead.
When it comes time for a second raise dead (or a resurrection), you'll be glad you didn't burn off another 8 prestige in place of 2560gp. Keep in mind 2 prestige buys you 750gp.

It is far better to spend your Prestige on things that mean you dont die, than waiting till you die and then spending prestige to fix it.
My favorite purchases are scrolls, wands and vanities.
Things that prevent needing a raise dead
Potion CSW (for the time you get smashed in the surprise round and need to get out of the danger zone on HP)
Blind fighting feat (you are now not flatfooted in darkness or deeper darkness)
Darkvision Potion (you are now not blind in darkness)
Grease Potion (you are now +10 to CMD vs grapples)
Clear Spindle Ioun stones are pretty much a waste of 4k as everyone has them now the monsters have moved away from prepping mind control spells confusion is more common (as it can take out whole groups of PC's) (I have zero PC's with this item and only once has a PC been dominated and that was at level 4 before he could even have afforded this item).
25gp Buy a Silver holy symbol of the deity of your choice and wear it openly now everyone thinks you are a Paladin or Cleric and wont cast as many spells at you. (This also has the side effect of NPC's not immediately targeting the parties cleric as they arent sure which one of you he is until he starts casting spells or channeling).
Scroll of Heal (two DC31 UMD checks but worth it if you can get 25+ UMD easy for a cleric to pass the caster level check though its only DC12 which as a 7th level cleric means you need a 5)
Scroll of Breath of Life (I never buy these as if you are the only one who can use it buying one is pointless but I would use one on a player if they had provided it to me)

2PP for a potion of fly often means you get to live.
-----------------------------------------------------
But my number one advice is to talk to your fellow players. In character, but start talking. If you were really pathfinders heading toward a dangerous situation, wouldn't you want to know what the other people bring to the table?
Figure out if you have a scout, or not. Figure out who negotiates, and who goes through the door first. Plan for it.
Ex) With my mobile swashbuckler, I'm looking for a melee character (or two) that's more dangerous than I am. That means I can get away with using my mobility to harass and flank, and I won't draw 100% of the enemy attention.
I'm capable of acting as the tank, but at tables where that's the case, I stay very close to the rest of the group, to better protect them and to keep me in range of the touch range spells of my allies.
Ex2) With my support cleric, I ask "What sort of help do you need the most?" That guides spell selection: Fog Cloud or Bull's strength?

Elven Entanglement S5-05
If you aren't playing current PFS games, I can understand. But spreading misinformation based on not having played 2 of the last 3 scenarios released, seems like you're trying to win an argument that doesn't need to be had.

Decent list Slacker.
I like
* ioun stone torches (though remember you can only have 1 Cont Flm).
* The dull grey ones make great gifts - just paint them up a bit. Good for pocketable spell foci like Silence, Cont Flm, Deeper Darkness, Daylight.
* Cracked Dusty Rose (+1 comp INIT) is good at $500...
* Cracked Magenta Prism (+2 comp one skill, changeable) $800.
* Cracked Orange Prism (+1 Zero lvl spell) $1000.
* Cracked Opalescent White Pyramid (Weapon Familiarity(named)basically exotic/racial->martial) $1500.
I'd add at mid levels;
* I think a Wand of Prot Evil 1@1 can suffice for the Clear Spindle Ioun Stone Resonant power and not having to drink & eat isn't worth $4000.
* Spring loaded Wrist Sheath & Scroll of Breath of Life.
* Mossy Disk (+5 comp one Know Skill) has a good priced at $2500.
* Cracked Pearly White Spindle (Regen 1/hr) $3400. If you get the $20000 one - keep it in your wayfinder tucked into your bloomers!
* Tourmaline Sphere (CON +2 for Death) $1000. {that's $4400 to make it harder to kill you...yeah}
* Dusty Rose Prism (+1 inst AC & +2CMB/CMD{wayfinder}) $5000.

Decent list Slacker.
Thanks, but im fairly new to PFS thats what spawned this. I was searching for information. Most other forums have good stickys with this information.
Thanks everyone for the tips, I hope when future PFS players are searching for information this comes up. I would update the OP but the time elapse thing has happened and I cant. Maybe someone who is a moderator on the boards will compile the info for a stick.

Interestingly Eric I have played both the season 5 ones, and ran the season 4 the confusion proliferation in season 4 was far more devastating for the average party than a single PC being dominated as once a confused PC attacks another confused PC it starts a fight to the death. Neither of the season 5 monsters lead off with those tactics most likely because we seriously messed up the scenario layout in 5-03 by setting off the last 2 encounters at the same time meaning I started the fight squeezing in the same square as the only creature capable of using dominate giving the monsters option to use domination spells (well that and I was a monk for that game), and the only creature in 5-05 who could possibly have had the spell was handled through diplomacy. You are far better off shoring up your will save in case of confusion being cast, than worrying about domination effects in PFS.
Like I said before buy a silver holy symbol for 25gp and make sure it is clearly visible if you wear heavy armor, it means that all NPCs have a chance of believing that you are a cleric/Paladin and not a low will save PC.
Dominate is a full round casting time, which with a party of murder hobos is entirely too long to be standing around chanting (unless you are invisible and the party has no means to detect invisibility)
Edit: On topic again a Swarmbane clasp is invaluable as a melee PC you go from doing 1d6+50% against swarms to doing your full damage which as a melee guy should be enough to drop the swarm in 1-2 rounds which for 3k should never be underestimated

Wands - cure light, endure elements, prof evil, comp languages, infernal healin, mag armor
Potions - cure mod, prof evil, oil of daylight, dark vision, fly, touch of sea, mag armor
Scroll - tstrike, fly, neut poison, darkness, daylight, gr inv, invis
Alchemy - 5 ea acid, ice, fire, caustic, air crystals, and 10 oil
Prots - antitox, antiplague, blood block, and anti swarm
If you can get it, keg of gunpowder
Std dunj gear, ink pen, chalk, book, rope, candle, seal in wax, pitons, hammer crowbar
I like a little bargaining items wine (good/bad), keg of ale, meat, salt, rations, and perfume
Small bag of copper coins (for throw in)
Small bag of caltrops
Plus a good handy haversack

Wand of cure light wounds. Use it; love it. If you can't use it? Buy one anyway and loan it to someone in the party that can.
Buy? Use Prestige Points. This should be what you spend your first 2 prestige points on. It's invaluable for keeping you alive for the first few levels.
And like The Beard said: get it even if you can't use it! This keeps the divine caster in the party from using all of her spells on healing, letting her cast spells for buffs and removing other conditions. Between combats, she can spam you with your wand until you are healed.
And be generous with newbies who might not have a CLW wand. Burn a charge or two on them when they need it. By the time the wand runs out of charges, you'll have enough gold or prestige to replace it easily. Besides, you may adventure with one of the same players later, and he might remember your generosity.

Just because the currency is different, prestige versus gold, doesn't change the fact that you are buying the item. If you are paying for it you are buying it.

![]() ![]() ![]() |

CLW wand is PFS 101. Additional uses of prestige are debatable. I like the contingency potions myself. Fly and darkvision are particularly potent.
I am usually playing races that have darkvision. Not for their darkvision, but because those races allow me to better build a character I would enjoy. But the potion of fly? That's a must have in my opinion, especially in later tiers where it seems enemies become aroused simply by the mentioning of "fly." A means of seeing through invisibility is also something you can never go wrong with. You might not encounter invisibility spammers often (actually, you probably will), but when you do? You'll be glad you invested.

I think potion versus scroll is class dependent. Take what's cheapest unless you'll need it when you're in trouble and can't cast.
Unless I'm a cleric or fighter type I prefer Wand of Infernal Heal 1@1. Wands of CLW are faster but 10 is better than 1d8+1. Usually there is time... add 2 cure light potions.
Some of the 4th level spells are good for faction PA "hail marys" if on your spell list.
Protective scrolls that are good to have [if on your list];
(1)Bear Con 2@3, (1-5)Restoration Lsr 2@3, (1)Delay Poison(for before)2@3, (1)Align Weapon 2@3, (1)Resist Energy 2@3, (1)Darkvision 2@3, (1)Magic Circle vs Evil 3@5, (1)Remove Blindness 3@5, [5]Mount 1@1, [1]Bestow Weapon Proficiency 2@3, [1]Monstrous Physique 1 3@5, [1]Elemental Body 1 4@7, [1]Monstrous Physique 2 4@7, [1]Dimension Door 4@7, [1]Resilient Sphere 4@7.

Two trains of thought on Clear Spindle Ioun Stone:
1) It's horribly broken and defeats the spirit of the game. Your party should have a way of dealing with a dominated companion OR should be able to gather enough info about the enemy to know their abilities and plan a way to counteract the issue (Prot from Evil, Counterspell, whatever...).
2) It's the best valued item in PFS and a must have for any high DPR character build.
I'd think the BBEG would dominate the melee guy in his face murdering him before the archer in the back. I get that PF archers have the highest DPR, but they're not getting AoO every time the baddy casts and a dominated fighter can get AoO on archers unless they have certain feats.
Be careful on the wrist sheaths. Many DM's do not allow a scroll in one. I have actually joined this camp. Just seems like a loose scroll has a probability of getting ripped up on activation of the device and doesn't fit within the description of devices listed for me, but this is totally a GM call unless I've missed a recent FAQ or errata.

Why are people so afraid of dominate person? I mean sure it has the possibility to wreck havoc on the entire party but it also makes for a fantastic and memorable game. (This is also coming from a guy who had his friend's 10 level magus dominated, which killed half the party).
Dominate Person 5th level only works on "persons/people".
I'd rather Magic Jar 5th them or Charm Monster at 4th.

I generally don't use the clear ioun stone as I just have a wand of Prot. from evil. Gives dominated or charmed NPC new saves so you can talk with them instead of being a murder hobo? Yes please.
UMD is your friend...unless your a caster...in which case it's just really useful.
Scroll of DD, fly, windwall, invis purge, daylight, echolocation+sleet storm can all end encounters. So basically you want these on hand. Potion variants when available if your not into UMD works too.

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

For a sideways type of thing:
Cracked purple prism Ioun stone, from Seekers of Secrets, IIRC. This is a slotless 1 level Ring of Spell Storing, for 2K gp.
This would make a wand of True Strike, Shield, or other helpful 1st level spell into something you have someone in the party activate the Ioun stone, use a wand to put the spell into the stone, then return your wand and stone to you. Removes wasted actions when your UMD check fails in combat, and lets a martial use some of the more interesting low-level spells in the game.
Two-handed weapon? Check. Shield spell? Check.
Really, really need to hit? Able to delay one round to do it? True Strike? Check.
Other spells that might be useful that way? Lead Blades, Abundant Ammunition, Gravity Bow, many more.
Might even be amusing to see the Fighter cast CLW on the Cleric when she needs it.

You lost me.
So having an item which preemptively answers a given challenge "defeats the spirit of the game", while casting a spell for exactly the same effect and more is totally fine?Maybe I missed a detail, but that sounds like saying that wearing a shield is defeating the spirit of the game while casting shield is the proper way. What's the big deal about getting a benefit via equipment instead of spellcasting?

First aid gloves from the PFS Primer.
I really like this item, as it allows a non cleric to cast Breath of Life without having to make a UMD roll, and it avoids the issue of having a scroll in a spring-loaded wrist sheath. They are pricier than going the scroll route, but even at 2,250 per casting, that's still a bargain compared to having to raise someone and not having them around for the rest of the fight. All the other potential spells they can cast are just a bonus. It's even a good item for clerics that don't want to use a spell slot to memorize Breath of Life.

Even if you have a wand of CLW, and can use it without UMD, carry a potion of CLW or 2. I know from personal experience. Early in her career, my witch had a CLW wand, and was the only one in the party who could use it. So, of course, she was brought to negative HP, and no one else had any healing. Since then, she always carries potions, and lets her companions know where they are. ;-)

On the topic of Clear Spindle Ioun Stones and Wayfinders. I find compulsion effects to be all too common in my Society experience. The problem is lower-level and lower cost solutions all take actions. Before you spend those actions to draw and drink that Protection from Evil potion, you've already been zonked.
Having this as a constant slotless effect is definitely worth considering, even at that price.

Could you explain what breath of like has to do with this item. I just thought it they were gloves that grant a +5 to Heal Checks.

Nope. These are a new item that lets you expend "charges" in the form of jewels on the gloves to cast various spells:
So two castings of Breath of Life for 4,500 gold. Or various combinations of other spells. They take the hand slot, but I never seem to buy anything for that anyway.

Number of Walter's PFS characters: 16ish
Number of Walter's PFS characters with a slotted clear ioun spindle: 0
It's not a "must have" item for everyone. It's quite good, but, meh, I don't really care for it.
My only only "must have" is having a way to recover lost hit points. It's a nice way to contribute to shared party resources. If you'd like to make friends at the table, I'd get a CLW wand or have some method of healing early on (level 1 or 2).

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

I'm with Walter on the no clear ioun stone bandwagon.
I have one between 11 characters, but only because that one character has failed so many will saves (despite being a Sorcerer and having it as his best save). He doesn't always know if it will work, but he carries the ioun stone/wayfinder, he bought a Page of Spell Knowledge for Protection from Evil, he carries a scroll of Silence to UMD (I'm looking at you, harpies), several other scrolls to eliminate annoying conditions, and 6 sets of earplugs. Things just got too ridiculous for him to not buy everything he possibly could to help. Though I suppose taking Iron Will somewhere along the line might have been a good idea, too.
None of my other characters have one, though. So far it hasn't been a big deal.

Ok, I should have put in a caveat, if you have a dangerous PC, the Clear Spindle Ioun Stone is a must. If you have a bleh PC, then you don't need it. My lvl. 8 ranged fighter. Does 1d8+15 x 4, so if some invisible goon dominates me, I'm probably going to kill someone in my own party, with my +13 initiative. And a good GM will cast the spell and then wait until its your initiative before he tells you, you've been compromised, he'll give people a spellcraft check, if they fail, your party won't even know you're working for the "bad guy" until you open fire on your boys, catching them all flat footed.

I would agree that there's a correlation between the quality of a PC's build and how badly it needs permanent-immunity types of items, but I suspect you got the relationship backwards.
