Tonight on Dispatches From Deep Space, another World Building 101. This week: Where Do The Myths Come From?
"...It is important when you are setting up your cultures and religions and philosophies in your game world to make sure that they're believable. Building up the fleshy, chewy bits of them by way of these sorts of tales is a good way to add to the believability of the whole tapestry of your game world. But again, where do they come from?..."

Two things!
First, I got linkified at Tuesday Serial. Pretty cool.
Second, the Master Post for Number One With A Bullet is up.
Also Sunday the 9th's Dispatches From Deep Space talks about sex and gender politics in non-Western Normative cultures and how they apply to my game (and gives tips on how they might apply to yours).
Enjoy!

This week on Dispatches From Deep Space, how a couple of simple changes in how you handle the economy in your game world can add several layers of depth, and maybe even surprise your players in a way they never expected:
"...After all the math was said and done, it came up that the characters had dropped nearly a million GP into this town over the course of a year and a half. "What is a sleepy little fishing town supposed to do with that much gold?" I asked them. "Use it as bait?" For the first time since the game started, the characters, and I like to think the players as well, really understood that their actions were changing the world they lived in...”
As well, Friday the 11th saw the latest installment (We're up to week 12!) of The Widow Wore Gold:
“Charles Shin, I take it?” Doctor Cabrio’s voice was modest, quiet, without a hint of pretense behind it. It reminded Charlie of the narrators on his stress management exercises, or the calm, even-toned hosts of nature painting programs. Properly leveraged, that voice could be Doctor Cabrio’s greatest asset; even bad news could be taken calmly, delivered by a voice like that.
“Charlie’s fine,” Charlie replied, smiling as he slipped into the chair the Doctor motioned him toward. “Only my accountants and estranged relatives call me Charles.”

For those of you still paying attention, The Widow Wore Gold hits its 17th week of serialization tomorrow. If you have not been reading, you've missed AI's, attempted murder, the mysterious value of 0.5 kilograms, and alien bartenders.
And if that's not your sort of thing, then I don't know what to tell you. ;)

Yup =)
Ah, excellent. You make me a happy fellow.
The 75SW has come up a few times in The Widow Wore Gold, along with what the after-effects of it were, but this piece needed to be written in order to really flesh it out and make a bridge between the current serial and another in planning.
As always, I ask but this: If you like it, do please share it with others. My readership is entirely crowdsourced at this point. :)
(And it goes without saying that if you don't like it, tell me so that I can fix it!)

So in a few weeks I'll have been posting my serial fiction for a solid year.
Amazingly, some people I speak to about this regularly still look at me with a baffled look on their face and ask "You're writing serials?"
Yes. Yes I am. Perhaps you might read them!
And hey, if you like them, awesome! Let me know. Tell others.
If you don't like them, let me know sooner, so I can fix them.
Click click, read detective fiction
As always, you can read from the beginning by clicking the story links on the right-hand sidebar of the page. :)

It's Friday morning, Nine AM has come and gone, and that means that the latest installment of "The Widow Wore Gold - A Charlie Danger Mystery" has gone live!
You can find it here:
Week 30, in which two AI's talk about life and crime
And, as always, if you like it, awesome! Share it, spread it around. If you don't, well, not awesome - but if you don't, do me a favor and tell me why. I can't fix it if I don't know what's broken!

This week starts Chapter 11 of my science-fiction detective serial, The Widow Wore Gold: "Eight Letter Word For Hired Killer."
As always, it's cool if you like it, it's cool if you don't. If you like it, great! Share it around, and let me know what you like. If you don't, well, darn, but please tell me why - I can't fix it if I don't know what's broken.
This week's installment is here.

Friday once again? Already?
This week on "The Widow Wore Gold," Charlie dives deeper into the case to discover that... Well, you'll just have to see. Today starts Chapter Twelve: The Gold Wore The Widow.
With a chapter title like that, how can you not click?
Also, I know that I've not provided many game-related essays lately. That's because work has been eating my face, and the serial, I can put a buffer in the queue and have it post weekly. More essays when work stops the face-gnoshing.

Hello Friday, my old friend.
I see it's fiction time again.
A murder plot that has come quickly creeping
Into a world that's never sleeping
And the brain of the man who can solve it may
Go insane
And narrate, in silence.
This week on The Widow Wore Gold, the worst kept secret in the world.

jemstone |

Yay!
I think I am going to dedicate a chunk of this weekend to reading these all in a row. =)
You honor me, my friend.
I've been reworking the opener and several of the chapters of Number One With A Bullet as well, so if you want to read it in its original draft form before it gets redone and "completed" for Epub-ing, now's the time to do it.
...
And of course, all I ask is that if you like it, you let me know. Maybe tell your friends.
And if you don't like it, let me know sooner. :)

Hey, look! Week 40 of The Widow Wore Gold is up!
For those of you keeping track, I've been officially doing these weekly serials (both The Widow Wore Gold and Number One With A Bullet) for over a year, now.
Much to the surprise of many, I'm sure.
Anyway, check it out. If you like it, let me know. If you don't like it, let me know *sooner* so I can make it better.

I've been here for so long, yet only now I found this thread here? This is quite something. I've been writing as a hobby myself for five years, but only last year did I decide to try and make something a bit bigger for myself and only yesterday did I create a blog that I could update once I have an idea what to do with it. I've been writing a novel that I want to publish when it's done, and have plenty of other ideas that I need to get to some day. Either way, your works seem pretty good, I've just started on the first parts of The Widow Wore Gold and have liked what I've seen so far.

Thank you for the kind words.
I've been really pushing myself to get back in to my writing, having gotten out of it for over a decade due to (not gonna lie) being basically shut down and shut out of it by my (very) abusive ex. I've found it can be a bit of a stumble sometimes, because I still find that I doubt myself, but it's a good thing to do and I repair that damage every time I put a word down. So there's that. :)
Please link your blog here? I'm sure the non-vocal readers of this thread (I know there are at least two) would love to see it as much as I would. :)
There's more Charlie Danger coming soon, I promise. Every Friday at 9am!
(Sadly the story *will* end, but I promise I'll do my best to make it a good one.)

It took me a while, but I finally managed to put enough attention into a single piece of writing to publish my first RPG supplement, Ottolf's Handy Manual of Everyday Magic.
I also keep a blog about RPG stuff where I try to sound smarter than I really am, but I'm afraid it's entirely in Castilian.

I thought folks might like to see something about the actual science behind the technology in The Widow Wore Gold.
As you'll see, when I first started the work on the story, the science didn't actually "fit," but boy it sure does now!
Icy, Klaus, thank you for your links!

Writing is sortof fun. I've had fun writing a backstory and writing the first session of the jade regent adventure path. Writing the story may be easier with access to the AP. (I'm a PC) The backstory was easy, the first session compilation felt a little forced, and with a week deadline not too much leeway. I'm trying to keep records so it could be picked up if the mood strikes.

It's Friday morning, and 9am Pacific has come and gone.
That means it's time for The Widow Wore Gold!
In just one week, the adventure of Mr. Charlie Danger will have been running for a full year without interruption! Not too shabby!

And hey, if you like it, spread it around.

The Widow Wore Gold is one year old today. Well, it's older than that, but it's been live and weekly for a year as of today!
Go check it out, and if you like it, let me know. Spread it around. Tell your friends.
And if you don't like it? Well, let me know SOONER.

And proving I can ape the style of such pulp/supernatural writers as Burroughs and the rest, I give you The Auctioneer.

Chapter 15 of The Widow Wore Gold (Ex Una, Plures) starts today!
This week, it's Melody's turn for a surprise guest, and it's literally the last person she'd ever have expected. Twice.
Again, if you like it, I thank you. Spread it around. Tell your friends. If you don't like it, well, let me know. I could use some good constructive criticism, and I always have room for improvement.
Obviously, I hope you like it, though.

jemstone |

A bit behind due to overtime hell, will have to get caught up on these ASAP.
Also they moved you out of OTD. >_<
Yeah, I guess that plugging away and writing over fifty thousand words on this thing counts as Artwork and Crafting.
I'm not going to argue! If it's on topic for something, it's not off topic for anything!
So!
This week on The Widow Wore Gold, the advantages of being a detective with a distributed consciousness come into play, as Melody literally branches out to tackle the case from two different angles.
And remember: I'm taking part in a contest at my Day Job! The more reblogs and interest generated in my content, the better my chances of landing the prize - and if I win the prize (a whole mess of Tumblr swag) I will *give it all away*, because what else do you do with swag but spread it around?
The contest runs through the end of the quarter! Tell your friends!
As always, if you like it, awesome! Tell me! Tell your friends! Reblog that bad boy!
If you don't like it, well, tell me sooner!

This week on The Widow Wore Gold, I get to use the term "vengeful deity illegal." Which is a reward in and of itself.
Remember, I'm not doing this for kicks. If you like the story, and you want more, let me know! Reblog it! Show your friends!
And if you don't like it, let me know! I can't improve in a vacuum!
