RotRL PDF - 3.5e?

Rise of the Runelords

So I bought the Runelords PDF from Paizo, and it looks like the PDF is actually for 3.5e -- EL instead of CR being the most obvious. Are there any major changes or errata that I should be aware of if I'm using this 3.5e version with Pathfinder's rules?

tough break, there are lots of threads im sure for conversion. I hope you just got the pdf for burnt offerings not every book. If you just got the first one i recommend getting rise of the runelords anniversary edition, it has every book in one and is updated to the pathfinder rules. Hope it helps you:)

Yeah, it was just Burnt Offerings. I didn't want to drop the money on the entire Adventure Path until I was sure my players were actually interested in a long term campaign. If the rest of the PDFs (aside from the anniversary edition) are also 3.5e, that sucks. :(

They are. RotRL didn't get updated to PF until the hardcover compilation was released last year. The original AP issues are still 3.5.

The original Rise of the Runelords predates the Pathfinder RPG by two years. They are written for 3.5.

You might want to consider the Anniversary Edition instead. That was the original AP re-written for PFRPG. The AE also smoothed out a lot of rough edges in the original. And, it's cheaper than all 6 installments of the original.

Problem is I already shelled out the money for the PF #1 PDF. I don't want to spend $40 on another PDF that I may not use (or $60 on another hardcover -- I've spent enough preparing as it is!). As I said earlier, I don't know what my players' interest is in a long term campaign right now. We start Sunday, so I guess I'll find out soon enough. I was hoping someone could point me towards a conversion guide, errata, or other notes and tips to help make the 3.5e version work in PFRPG. Just how different is the PFRPG AE version? If everything works out and my players do want to continue, I /do/ plan on picking up the full RotRL AE, but for now just need some pointers in getting the old 3.5e version to work for me.

Specifically, I've read that 3.5e monsters are cake compared to their PFRPG equivalents. I also am curious about encounters -- do I award XP based on the EL (after converting to CR) or based on creature CR? Or do I award the EL (CR) XP in addition to the individual XP for each monster?

Basically, is the EL/encounter CR the combined CR of all the monsters and other challenges in the encounter or is it in addition to the XP awarded for each monster/challenge with it's own CR?

paizo does have a free pdf somewhere for converting 3.5 to pathfinder im using my phone right now so i cant link it. If you dig far enough into the runelords sub forum you should find other goodie. Beyond that i dont know i never had the 3.5 books

The easy way to convert is to just give the 3.5 versions of the bad guys maximum hit points, and play it straight. Alternatively, replace the 3.5 monsters with the Pathfinder stats from the PRD. You'd need to hand-convert the NPCs for full effect, but again, just max out their hit points and it's close enough. Especially at low levels, there won't be that much of a difference between the 3.5 and PFRPG versions.

Regarding the Anniversary Edition: It is, in my opinion, one of the best campaigns out there, and is well worth the money.

Also: Crimson Throne, Second Darkness, and Legacy of Fire were also written for 3.5; there are no official PFRPG versions of them at all.

I just wanted to provide an update to this thread. At the suggestion of several people on these message boards, I dropped the money on the RotRL AE PDF.

The interactive maps and the improved quality seems to already have made it worth it, not to mention the additional encounters that were added and some of the clarifications that have been made about certain events.

Definitely worth the purchase and I appreciate the tip.

Thanks.
