What does this weapon trait mean? For instance, can you use your dex die for a combat check where a shortsword is used?

Only if the card tells you that you can. But in the absence of such text, I would assume that the "Finesse" trait is something which might become relevant later on, with certain banes or boons.

There are several traits which do not have clear meaning yet, but we put them on because we thought we might care about those traits later. Some may become apparent in this adventure path, some later, others perhaps never at all.

The main unstated rule of this game is "cards tell you what they do." If it doesn't tell you something, don't do it.

I thought it was "cards don't have memories." :)

Okay, "Cards tell you what they do, and then immediately forget."

Previous thread spoiler:
Like a token of remembrance?
