Bat Familiar with a 20 to Perception?

Advice

Hi there,

I am just trying to figure out how this works out.

I have a character who has a bat as a familiar and it has a perception of 20 at level 6.

I am trying to figure out how it gets that high?

Can someone help me with the math here?

Here is the link to a bat animal stat block

Dark Archive

familiar uses master ranks.

6 ranks
2 wis mod
4 racial
3 class skill
2 alertness

+17

maybe skill focus for +3?

=13

If you are using herolab it may be incorrect.

Does it have any magical items?

No magical items or skill focus

I think 17 might be its max

I think the error made is that he is using the stat block and reading the +6 as something to add to his familiar rather than a total of racial bonus and stat bonus

The racial bonus is only on when blindsense is being used so he should not count that if it is not always in play anyway. That is why I did not count it.

Maybe the master has the Evolved Familiar feat, for another +8.

Yup thats it...damn I dont think anything is going to be able to make a stealth check on this guy....

I don't see that stated anywhere on the monster block.

To the OP: It does seem like it should be +17 unless the player has an unusual way to get another +3.

If there's another +8 from evolved familiar, then that should be +25

Hmm might have the Infiltrator archetype. Familiar gets the Alertness feat rather than the master. Would bring it up to a +19.
