You know you're getting jaded when you find a very minor error in one of your practices (it says, "Look at inbound" rather than "Look at outbound", when there isn't any "inbound" to look at), and you decide to leave it in just to check on your checkers.

I swear, I've said it before: We're paying people $50+ an hour to read a fricking Word document, follow the steps exactly, and let us know whether they run into any errors, and over the years it has proven an impossible task for 95+% of our fellow employees.

Makes it far less of a mystery why people considered programming their VCRs to be the height of technical skill back in the 1980s.

EDIT: Impus Major has massive attention issues. I've taught him to take a physical printout of a page, put a ruler on it, and move the ruler down to do a single step, then cross the step off with his pencil once he's done. It's worked wonderfully for him for years. And he can get up and run around all he wants; the ruler and pencil marks keep track of where he is for him.
If a 10-year-old can learn coping mechanisms, is it too much to ask of an adult?

Clocking out. Good night, everyone.

I'm here. Crazy night. Ladies husband is missing in the hotel and the cops aredoing a search.

And he's back. He went to Walmart and got lost on his way back.

This week has been rather quiet. Probably because you and Gran aren't around at the same time?

That would be a good reason. Are you still on my side of the hemisphere? if so that's another good reason.

The Exchange

How long was the husband missing for the police to start the search and how cold was it outside?

The Exchange

I am on your side of the hemisphere but won't be for too long(48 h or so more). Besides I haven't been very spammy of the late since my PBP has been keeping me busy.

Well we think he left at about 10 and he came back at 12:30 he went to Walmart and got lost on his way back. he hit the highway and unfortunately the way he was going you have to drive pretty well to the next town to get turned around. It wasn't too too cold.

The Exchange

2h 30 min and they call the police? Or was it 14h? In SG you need to be missing 24h.

time for me to research mineta.

Haven't you done that already?

The San Jose, CA airport is Mineta Airport (named for the former US Secretary of Transportation).

Well they both went to sleep and she woke up with him gone. he didn't take his phone his jacket or his dentures he apparently just threw on her sweater (worlds best grandma) He thought he was only going to be gone a minute. So shes a bit panicked when she wakes up and hes gone. so we search find out there car isn't outside and she mentions he might be suffering from dementia. So I call dispatch and they send two cops over (its a small town so they were probably bored anyways) after they leave and put a bolo out on him he walks in a little later.

My father-in-law suggested experimenting with a low dose of caffeine on Teensy Valeros to see how it affects his ability to focus (since Ritalin and some other ADHD meds are basically stimulants, and we can't afford health insurance at the moment).
I checked a few of the ADHD parenting sites and found a formula of 2.5 mg caffeine per kg of body weight, so a dose<=50mg should be well within the parameters. In other words, one cup of strong black tea. (Or, if I want to start with a lower dose, one cup of green tea.)
Thoughts? It's not like I'm talking about homeopathics or crap like that.

Well caffeine definitely improves focus. He doesn't have any heart issues or anything right?

Oh and for green tea it has L-theanine in it which will improve brain function. If I am remembering and spelling that right.

No, except for a mild allergy to milk products, he's perfectly healthy.

he should find it helpful then. There is good research on caffeine helping.

The Exchange

A cup of black tea never hurt anyone. Hell as a teen I was drinking several cups of tea at Chinese dinners and nothing happened. If he's a sweet tooth, he may need to take it with sugar or honey.

I suspect nothing will happen(as in improvements in condition), but it wouldn't do him any harm either.

The Exchange

I went a little silly over herbal teas, drinking 4 cups of chamomile tea in a single afternoon.

If I'm not mistaken chamomile is low if not caffeine free right?

Chamomile tea has no caffeine and is actually a sleepytime tea.

And it's a weed in the upper Midwest, so easily found.

What? I did put a rank into survival so I could identify edible plants.

I lean more towards tea than coffee. See if you can teach him a tea ceremony to make it more fun.

Because that would require him sitting still for four hours?

The Exchange

I don't have the patience to do a tea ceremony but black tea should be brewed at 212 F, green tea 176 F.

For Chinese tea ceremony, the tea leaves are first blanched with boiling water, then water is poured away. Only the second brew is taken. The tea should be sipped. And the flavour of the tea changes through the brews(yes, a cup of oolong can be brewed 7 times). Most Chinese teas only can be brewed 3 times though.

Magic words when estimating potentially missing people.

Anyway, in most jurisdictions the amount of time is not actually prescribed by law. The circumstances matter, and in case of functional adults 24 hours is considered a minimum practical time before you can estimate they are not simply out of contact.

well, obviously not THAT ceremony, but a (much shorter) way of brewing tea that helps him to look forward to it as something that helps, not a long boring slog of preparing hot leaf juice.

Tea is slurp! I don't even need an excuse to go make tea. I just need some off time at work where I'm not looking at a PBP or something.

Boss (to other Captain): Do you want Big (Slow) Pete, or Other Guy?

Captain (doesn't even hesitate): Big (Slow) Pete!

Boss (mouth dropping): Are you f&&@ing kidding me!

I say Captain because we have the same first name and I can't go blabbing my real name on the internet, that's not how an air of mystique is developed) which is an incredibly common name in the landscaping industry, I worked for a company with five people with my name.

The Exchange

But why would anyone take : Big (Slow) Pete?

Because the other guy is worse.

Ah, my government at work:

14 years ago, we replaced the sidewalk in front of our house. The city government provided a 50% subsidy, so we brought in a well-regarded private contractor, the sidewalk was done in 2 days, and it's still in great shape, in spite of a stupid ancient camphor tree trying to tear it up with its roots.

5 years ago, our neighbors tried to do the same thing in front of their house: Same length of sidewalk, same amount of tree damage, etc. The government started off with, "We no longer fund that kind of thing," then a year later, "We now fully fund that kind of thing," etc., etc., giving a different message every few months, year after year, so that our neighbors never actually fixed the darned thing.

Back in July or August, they came and painted some markings on the sidewalk. We paid little attention, since they've done that before.

Yesterday evening at 5:15 pm they put up signs that the sidewalk is going to be closed all of next week for repairs.

Yep. With NO NOTICE WHATSOEVER, they are closing our sidewalk for Halloween.

I'd send the TWENTY-FIVE POUNDS of candy I've already purchased to City Hall in protest, but they'd probably enjoy it.

I guess the kids' game is going to have a LOT of sugar for a while...

Everyone calls him Big Pete, I added the slow because he's so slow, although really he's more ponderous then slow, as he doesn't really just rake out a pile of dirt but seems to ponder what it's like to be the pile of dirt.

But he's alright as long as you give him defined tasks and something mentally stimulating or somewhere to go every once in awhile.

Most importantly, he doesn't complain and he's interesting to talk to.

So, we gave Pete a good review.

Scintillae wrote:

In earthquake country with tree-lined streets, no, no you don't. The typical "you have to tear up and replace your entire sidewalk again" is only 10-15 years. We specifically hired a contractor who knows the area well, so he contoured the sidewalk away from the tree roots and used a special kind of flexible concrete. It was a lot more expensive, but we've hit 14 years and the sidewalk hasn't cracked yet. Around here, that's a Methuselah sidewalk.

You should visit, if only to see our sidewalks, some of which have been in the ground for fifty years or more.

I get to take Crookshanks to a birthday then Tiny T-Rex to an arcade.

I pulled out a sidewalk and discovered they poured it over the previous sidewalk which was also poured on top of a previous sidewalk. We ended up smashing and pulling out 18 inches of concrete.

Oh yeah, it was also 95 degrees that day. And we had to do it all by hand.

Why Impus Major Isn't Allowed to Speak in Public:

We were watching the pilot for "Sabrina the Teenage Witch" (very "meh") and she got her familiar, Salem the cat.

Impus Major: Wait a minute! Isn't a witch naming her cat "Salem" the same thing as a Jew naming his cat "Auschwitz"?

We had to pause the show for a while...

Reminds me of Bill Hicks talking about Christians wearing crosses on their necks, as it might make the second coming a bit awkward... "It's like going up to Jackie Onassis wearing a sniper rifle pendant. Just thinking of John, Jackie, just thinking of John."

No, you're not!

I don't. I tried to watch 'DXD High School' once, but it was a bit too silly, and there were no sword fights.

I also tried to watch 'Record of Lodoss War', which I liked more, since there were sword fights; on the minus side, no saucy nuns showing their underpants.
