platypus vivisectionist. build more freaks. take mummy discoveries. be an abomination making abomination

A Ranger with the Beast Master archetype would probably be good for any awakened animal. That way they could be the leader of a pack / group of the same animals.

Urban Druid. At level 6 they can turn into any small or medium humanoid at will. It's like a regular druid in reverse.

Nice. :)

Super intelligent gorilla wizards. That is all.

Ooh, Wolf as Huntmaster Cavalier, with a pack of hunting dogs!

Weasel with levels in sorcerer, then dragon disciple. Beware the Dracoweasal!

Toad enchanter, all hail hypnotoad

Crab tetori, master mini wrestler

And the super deadly, pony inquisitor/assassin. When you think its just grazing, it is in fact observing you for a hoof+bane+death attack.

5 people marked this as a favorite.

/tg/ had the best idea for an awakened animal character that I've ever seen:

Sir Bearington:

>Make a bear character in D&D 3.5
>DM laughs
>Make bear a rogue, put every point I can into disguise
>Prestige class as a spy to get more disguise
>DM says I can't speak english
>Max out bluff
>By growling and gesturing, I can fake speaking a language I don't speak (english)

>use money to hire a butler NPC
>Give him magical item to let him speak bear

"GROWWWWWL"
"An excellent suggestion, Mister Bearington. We really should ask the group to investigate the Black Marsh

>Over the course of the game, be knighted as Sir Bearington
>Queen holds a dinner in my honor.
>A guest becomes the first man to ever make a perception check that can beat my disguise
>Shouts out loud
"HEY, THAT GUY'S NOT A GUY, HE'S JUST A BEAR!"
>Man is escorted out of the castle while the guards apologise profusely for the indignity
"We're so sorry, Sir Bearington, very sorry for this man's behavior"
"ROAR" *shrug*

LOL...those are hilarious!

Mr. chaoseffect, that has to be one of the greatest things I've ever seen on this forum. Hats off to you sir!!

The Mutant Turtles aren't awakened animals, as Awakening does not make any physical changes. What they are are anthromorphised animals.

WOOOOOOOOOOOOSH!

I'm aware of what this thread is about and I'm still disappointed no one is talking about Awakened Giant Snapping Turtle Ninjas.

The Exchange

It's a shame somatic components are so important to sorcery, because there are several bloodlines that would be just right for an awakened cobra...

Dude, it a snake, it just make it body into the somatic shape. Owl Oracle

Dracoweazel?

But seriously, how do some classes even WORK for awakened animals? Assuming their not just monkeys, in which case just play a vanara and be done with it.
How would a cat rogue work if it cant disable traps or pick locks? Or a rhino samurai who cant wield a sword? Or anything as a monk since monks cant use natural attacks in place of unarmed strikes?

Also, Awakened Deinonychus Pistolero Gunslinger.

Boars seem to be natural barbarians. There was a scenario where an awakened whale became a druid, which kind of makes sense. What other interesting...natural-seeming pairings are there? I like awakened animals...they really make for interesting NPCs, and I'd like to 'collect' a few.

The Grand Druid of Eberron is an Awakened oak tree. Wolves seem best as rangers... they fight smarter than boars do.

Owls would seem natural as wizards, but toting a spell book tends to limit their range. Clerics are another choice. Squirrels would scream rogue if they had the larynx to do so.

That's a good idea, but it misses out on one of the best things about a wolf inquisitor: Blistering Invective as a terrifying howl that lights people on fire.

Not all rogues disable devices. A cat rouge scout / assassin / spy works fantastically.

You miss out on Weapon Expertise and Mounted Archer, but Challenge, Resolve, and Banner work just fine, and nothing says you have to ride your mount.

Housecat slayers. If they conquer a keyboard, who knows what else they're capable of...

I tend to like the psionic classes for awakened animals. In addition to actually being playable (since you don't have to deal with things like speaking and spell components) they work pretty well.

Shadow Lodge

Awakened animals can speak. Also since the animal archive mentions awakened animals of casting classes (reproduced here) under aquatic animals and reptiles, I would assume that they can use gestures appropriate to their form for somatic components, like a druid with Natural Spell would. Material components might still be a problem, but sorcerers don't use them, divine casters can just wear a holy symbol, and other classes can either avoid spells with material components or take Eschew Materials.

Or get a Hand of the Mage (or some other Mage-Hand based wondrous item) to let you telepathically manipulate small objects.

Oh, and songbird bard.

It's absolutely a thing. I've seen it most frequently to flurry with a massive bite attack like that of a Tyrannosaurus - usually a druid/monk in Wild Shape, but a full-classed Awakened Tyrannosaurus monk would be pretty terrifying.

Do you think Share Spells- "A druid may cast spells on her animal companion even if the spells normally do not affect creatures of the companion's type"- would let a Druid cast Awaken on a Vermin Animal Companion?

Cause I think a Rogue/Ninja Scorpion would be pretty boss.

I always thought monkeys would make cool Alchemists.

Especially since "Throw Anything" might as well be one of their features anyway.

I must resist the crude joke...

I must...

I MUST!

Dammit.

So, would that mean a Monkey Alchemist would add his Int modifier to damage whenever he throws his poop?

Yes, that works, though it does stop being an animal companion.

EDIT: Personally, I think awaken should work on vermin normally. It works on trees, so why not a scorpion?
