1.) Since I believe you are the man to talk to about all the LE outsiders beyond just Devils how do picture the cultural/ethical differences between Asuras, Kytons, and Devils? I.e. considering that all of these creatures are LE outsiders what do you see as making them different from one another?

2.) How do you think kyton cults and Asura cults look and operate exactly? I've been working on some kyton ideas for my home game and I'm wondering what you see when you look at those outsider's cults.

3.) How do you picture the hierarchy of Kytons Demagogues on their home plane, do they function on a ridged hierarchy like that of the devils or is it something more fluid?

4.) What do you see hell as being like before Dahak scorched it and the devils moved in? Considering that you've mentioned the Kytons existing their prior to Asmodeus' arrival and acquisition of Hell does that mean they ran it in a similar capacity or was it something totally different?

5.) For that matter how do the Asuras fit into that equation? Can they even be found in numbers matching those of devil or kyton kind or considering their unique creation process are they always few in number? Did they always collect in Hell or is that a more recent development?

1.) Wes, you mentioned liking Suikoden, have you ever wanted to make a Pathfinder / d20 version of it/them?

2.) I was thinking about "how to make a lycanthropes module", and it hit me, how would one make it challenging without every NPC and their mothers having either Magic, Silver Weapons, or both? Is that one of the reasons why paizo doesn't make one?

3) If you could, would you write an Adventure Path for Evil and/or Monstrous PC?

Contributor

And now for a totally bizarre question. (Get those creative juices moving!)

If you could cuddle with your partner anywhere on Golarion, where would you go?

Anyway we can get details on the Kickstarter 'Bastard Hall' game you ran? Any particularly cool moment, monster, or plot device you used? I'd love to know if they wiped out or emerged triumphant..

Can you tell us any information on Astaroth, Glasya-Labolas, Nahemah, Orobas, Xaphan, Zaban, or any of the Asura Ranas, Raksasha Immortals, Oni Daimyos, or Kyton Demagogues? Any of them? Also, does Ahriman have a ny Div demigods serving him?

1) How does the church of Asmodeus try to appeal to the common people and convince them that they are "Good"?

2) How does the church of Asmodeus portray/villify celestials in it's sermons and teachings in a way that would make it's followers not want to venerate them?

3) If I said to a cleric of Asmodeus, "If I really wanted to follow the dictates of law and defy chaos, I'd just worship an Archon.", would he have any rebuttal besides hitting me with a mace?

4) In the Inner Sea NPC Codex, there's the Sisters of the Golden Erinyes, who are "baptized" into Asmodeus' faith. Would you say that generally, Asmodeus' faith is sort of like "Evil Bizzaro-Christianity" at least in terms of church architecture, baptisms, et cetera?

5) Does the church of Asmodeus in Cheliax have a Vaticanesque hierarchy?

6) Does the average citizen of Cheliax hate House Thrune, or do they support it?

Where in Mendev would you place the Leaden Cathedral (former headquarters of the Order of the Godclaw)?

I asked James Jacobs, he said to ask you.

Are there any infernal dukes that you can think of that would preside over the dominion of chattel slavery and dehumanization? This seems like something that would really be the purview of a some infernal duke or archdevil that isn't Asmodeus but there doesn't seem to really be one.

I don't mean to look antagonistic asking this but what was going through your mind when you wrote Fury of the First World (Pathfinder #36, p.57-59)?

The plot is basically Magdh ordering the PCs to apologize for defending themselves or else be attacked by destructive First World blooms yet again, followed by being ordered to "meddle in the affairs of the fey no more!" As if the PCs were the meddlers here!

I'm sure you had a reason for this particular plot but I can't comprehend why you'd think letting someone get away with bullying the PCs would be a good idea. And no, "She's a fey so she can act as nonsensical as she wants!" isn't a good reason.

I'm having an idea for an adventure, but I need a little insight into the mind of Asmodeus first. Would he ever be the kind to strike up a deal with Charon? Also, would Asmodeus ever be the kind to trick someone into signing a contract through deceit (e.g. artifact paper that looks like one contract but is actually a completely contract altogether)?

I wanted to thank you for directing me to the Inner Sea NPC Codex, I used the Hellknight in it as an encounter to scare my PCs out of Magnimar in Runelords and our fighter is officially a sworn enemy of them. He is more engaged in the story than ever.

How likely are different Hellknight orders to interact with each other?

I can answer this one, actually: nope. Asmodeus was, along with one other, the first god to be born into Golarion.

According to Asmodeus at least. He is, of course, known for not letting the truth get in the way of leveraging an advantage out of a story.

Asked this of James, and I thought I'd get input from others on it too:

I noticed something that stands out for me regarding Iomedae's relationship to Sarkoris. I'd been wondering about the sequences regarding PCs who've a god in their family tree and wondering how Iomedae could count since she's a god more prominent with the foreign crusaders, but then it hit me. As one of the big 20, Iomedae would have been known in Sarkoris already. Since the Sarkorians owed Aroden big-time for driving out Deskari when he first showed up there, and this was long after the events of the Shining Crusade, the Sarkorians would have been aware of Iomedae as a goddess between then and the opening of the Worldwound, the only difference being that she was Aroden's servant and not the Inheritor of his church.

So...how would Sarkorians view and interpret Iomedae, especially in light of her pseudo-role as the goddess that leads the charge to save and protect what's left of their home? I have an idea for a Sarkorian paladin brewing in my head and I'm wondering how he'd reconcile venerating Iomedae with his culture's druidic roots as the founders of the Green Faith. More specifically (or more broadly, I'm uncertain), I'm trying to figure out how an individual PC might blend worshiping an ecclesiastical god/goddess while still respecting the shamanistic religion of their ancestors. Apart from Erastil and Gozreh, who are nature gods and thus fit right in with things like the Green Faith or Shoanti totemism, many gods seem to fit better in more populous, settled areas, and where their faiths go, cathedrals and heirarchies follow that are antithetical to the old ways.

How does someone straddling those two worlds reconcile the different beliefs, or is such a thing impossible? James mentioned before in his thread that, for example, a Sklar-Quah Shoanti wouldn't venerate Sarenrae AND the totems at the same time. I'm a big fan of playing "straddling the line between ancient traditions and modern beliefs" kinds of characters, like many modern depictions of King Arthur have been, but I'm uncertain how to approach such characters from the standpoint of worship, especially if they take a divine caster class like a paladin or inquisitor.

I kind of took James' answer to be more about "could not get spells from both". I really like characters that straddle cultural lines too, and things like religious beliefs are rarely "all this" or "all that".

Currently playing a Shoanti half-orc who does just this. He venerates the totems of his Shrii-kirri Quah side as well as the celestial spirits and gods of his orc tribe's side, so it's a mishmash of Desna, the hawk, the wind, Pharasma, Sarenrae, and his ancestors and more. Some are seen as spirits closer to the natural world, some are seen as more a part of the spirit world beyond, but all are respected and worshipped. He tends to look to the totems for more immediate and tangible concerns of the natural world and the gods/celestials for spiritual matters of the heart and soul.

1. In addition to not being confined to gender, would it be safe to say that Arshea isn't confined to humanoid morphology either?

Nope. Though I'd say that about any deity.

AlgaeNymph wrote:

I get a very Charles Xavier vibe off this. The idea that an Arshea worshiper would want to create a place to teach people about themselves and hone their abilities in an environment free of prejudice sounds pretty noble to me.

AlgaeNymph wrote:

I'd think any of them would work, but the stationary ones could be the most fulfilling. Giving an Arshea cleric the time to settle down and evangelize could be pretty cool.

Well, he's neutral good, so most who match the deity in alignment would go to Nirvana. If not there, they'd gravitate to the planes that best matche their alignments.

I have it and it's full of folkloric monsters from South America, Africa, and other parts of the world that don't really get coverage. Each presented in a short story format (okay some of the stories are not great, but hey...the author isn't a horror writer by trade).

Some of these would make great additions to the game

Hey, Wes! I recently listened to your Horror in RPGs panel from PaizoCon and it inspired me to start a new tradition: I want to run the scariest one-shot scenario I can manage for my friends every October. Just something fun for Halloween. The ideas shared in that panel were fantastic, but I wanted to ask your advice on a horror module to use. It'll have to be PF (or at least easily convertible to PF) because it's the only system my friends and I know. I'm willing to go all out with music, setting, props, etc. Suggestions?

While I still STRONGLY recommend Dread, as there's like no rules impact, lets see. For Pathfinder, I'd suggest either Carrion Hill, From Shore to Sea, or the Haunting of Harrowstone. Aside from the creepy themes, the low level nature of a few of those really encourages a night of creepy gaming.

As a side note, I try to do something like this every year—but it typically turns into every other year. For that game, I take more of a B-horror movie direction, pulling out my copy of A Light in the Belfry, a second edition Ravenloft adventure that includes a CD with a fantastically over the top narrator. Its kind of the MST3K of D&D Horror. Well worth your time if you can dig it up!

If that's not enough to sate your lust for bender material, my pitch to Greg LaRose for my Mystic class in the Liberinfluxus Communis Kickstarter was as follows:

"Its a class that uses the monk's ki system to either build benders or jedi."

If Blood of the Elements doesn't sate your bender bloodlust, you now know where to look. ;-)

ASIDE: As the writer of Pact Magic Unbound, you wouldn't believe the number of times I accidentally mistype "bender" as "binder." Its the writer's curse, I suppose. : /

The Golux wrote:
Why were the first two Psychopomps' names changed from Yanakeion to Nosoi and Amzranei to Vanth?

Totally because of an editorial screw up on my part. I'd scripted out what I wanted for the first psychopomps and assigned Crystal Frasier to write up the first of them. Before I developed them, though, I had Sean's Pharasma article on my plate. During development of that I figured it'd be cool to throw in a mention of psychopomps, since they were coming down the road and to whet folks' appetites. So I threw them in, along with the names Crystal had given them. Then promptly moved on to other fires.

Some time later I got to developing the first of the psychopomps. In doing my revisions, I decided I hated the names. That's a bit strong, but they just didn't mean anything. They were just made-up words. These guys were too cool to just have made-up names. There were also too many existing, real-world psychopomps out there to not draw on them. So, I chose vanth, after an Etruscan psychopomp, and nosoi after a Greek death bringer. That satisfied me much more and gave these guys more conceptual weight.

And I TOTALLY forgot about the earlier note. Not having the write-ups in front of me, I thiiiink I noticed at the 11th hour, but still liked the new names enough to keep them and just left a note to the previously noted names in the descriptions.

So, in short, why? My personal editorial fickleness and an obsession with mythological cache.

Jumping ahead real quick.

This is a case where the rules demand one answer but the world allows for thousands. While I can see (and like) the idea of polytheistic cultures or faithful individuals, that doesn't play particularly nice with the RPG's rules. But fortunately, you can kind of have your cake and eat it too... from a flavor perspective.

If you're playing a devout character who expects to get supernatural power from a divine source, I don't think it's unreasonable to say that the godhead expects extreme devotion. (They're giving you the power to perform miracles after all.) That said, if your culture raised you in a more polytheistic way, I don't think outside either the realm of possibility or the god's tolerance for you to say a few prayers or swears in other divine figures' names. But, if you still expect to get power from one over all others, you have to hold that deity above all others.

So, in this context, if you want to play a Shoanti cleric and get the powers of Sarenrae, you're acknowledging that your character values Sarenrae's faith (and grant powers) over the totemism practiced by your culture. I'd play it that you can still join your family in their vernation of their totems—that's a cultural thing at this point—but you get no special benefits. Just attending or even participating in a basic ritual doesn't make you a member of that faith, you have to accept it into you more fundamentally than that. (Just because I attended mass at the Vatican doesn't make me Catholic. Every person paying respects at a Shinto temple doesn't instantly become shinto.) Even saying an occasional prayer to another deity or asking for a blessing as it pertains to events within other deities' purviews just makes sense—since it's a world where the gods are active and their dominions are known.

But despite all that, for the purposes of game balance, you can't use culture as a way to get more benefits than usual. Now, if you and you're GM wanted to work out some new balanced rules for a combo deity-totem character, that's cool, go for it. But it's a bit niche for us to focus on anytime soon.

Overall, I wouldn't be too afraid to worship one deity and still invoke others, I don't feel like that's a deal breaker. Heck (to get uncharacteristically religious for a moment) even the Christian god says "Thou shalt have no other gods before me," it doesn't say "Thou shalt have no other gods."* I feel like most of Golarion's deities feel the same: Want power from me? Okay, but I'm your one and only. You can look, but you go trying to get better miracles from someone else and we're through.

All of that being said, if you still want your character to be a religious totemist, there are ways to do that. I'd suggest a dual-classed cleric barbarian who uses some of the totem archetypes in the APG and Ultimate Magic (I think).

Very cool idea! Thanks for putting it out there!

(* I'm not actually opening up the door for religious debate here—ultimately I do not care. If this doesn't work as an argument for you, just ignore it.)

Growing up in Korvosa he was never really exposed to Shoanti culture and worship, and while he'll respect and participate in his peoples rituals if he comes into contact with them, he's still primarily a crusader for Sarenrae, working to spread truth and healing throughout the land! Thanks for the advice, Wes! :)

do you roll your abilities for your characters or use the point buy system? just curious

Rolling abilities is one of the most fun parts of the game for me. But I also have a deep love for wildly unoptimized characters. I run to run a game at some point where the characters are broadly different levels and see how that goes.

Have you played either Demon's Souls or Dark Souls? If so what did you think of them?

I have not. I know of them, and have been hearing about them endlessly this week between Patrick and James, but I've been caught up in Castlevania Lord of Shadows 2, Spelunky, Lego Marvel, Starbound, and Culdcept Saga (an old fav that, for some reason, re-entered rotation) recently. Batman Arkham Origins and Pokemon Y are near next on the list, but either Stick or Truth or Bravely Default may jump them.

My husband's been playing Dead Nation and (replaying) Grandia III while I'm writing, so I've been getting those vicariously. Both seem really cool.

But Dark Souls is definitely on the list!

As the Empyreal Lord Smiad (he's an archon and exhorts his followers to be honorable and slay evil dragons while aiding good ones) doesn't have a holy symbol in the books (he's one of the lesser ones in the back of Chronicle of the Righteous, and as a result doesn't have a full-page writeup), what, in your mind, would be a good holy symbol for his faithful to use? What would be a good obedience for his cultists to practice?

Holy Symbols: A scale carved to resemble dragon horns, a sunburst of scales, an armored dragon head (like a dragon knight), a golden eye, a spiral of golden fangs, a stained glass dragon design, a red dragon claw gripping and being gripped by a gold dragon claw. Stuff in that direction.

Obedience: Brew a tea made with scales (any reptile scales if dragon scales are not available; and they rarely are) and drink the bitter liquid while meditating. Burn scales with incense and meditate while standing over and breathing the thin smoke. Polish your collection of dragon fangs, paying honor to each in turn—especially your foes (assumes every worshiper starts with a dragon fang, either gifted by a dragon ally of the church or taken from a low-level dragon). Craft a toy or doll in the shape of a famous or known good-aligned dragon; give this to a child or passerby, making sure they know the story and good deeds of that dragon (helping spread knowledge that dragons are more than just monsters).

Try some of those on.

For Wes: What's the number 1 word that you most commonly misspell/mistype?

Skipping ahead.

Normally, I would say "silhouette."

This week, I would say "pharaoh." Because I done @#$%ed it up in a very visible way that thousands of people are going to see in just a few more weeks here.

As soon as the product page goes live I plan to being my public flagellation. :(

It's cool, though. The shelf life on cover-bound spelling errors is only about 10 years, so in about 2024 I should have lived this down.

Ouch. You have my sympathies.

Salt for Spelling Wounds:
However, I think you mis-spelled "begin" up there.

Ouch, you have my sympathies. I'd also like to apologize for misspelling "Shikaisen" and being lazy in getting the youkai links to you.

Shikaisen: Easier to find when not misspelled, but no by much. A Shikaisen is an immortal who transfers his soul into an object, which then turns into his new body and vice-versa for the previous body. This may cause a sex change. Also, the process can be sabotaged (creating a ghost). In Touhou, one is a swashbuckler/noble scion and the other is a sorcerer (arcane) with Wis as a dump stat.

Minreiki: A swarm of theatrical masks possessed by a spirit. According to legend, a prodigy prince crafted one for each theatrical piece intended to settle the populace. The example from Touhou has levels in bard (dervish dancer).

Yatagaratsu/Jinwu/Samjok-o: The three-legged crow with as many names. Essentially a phoenix-like demigod of the sun. Touhou associates it with nuclear power, meaning plasma oozes and solar dragons have something to keep it company.

Seconded!! (Also will share mine with you Alex if you want it =D Mine's a nice Steel group). Note you don't have to be playing the game - or even own it - to share the friend code, though one of the three Pokemon your Safari has won't be available until you beat the Champion at least once. Or so it was explained to me. Might be wrong >_>

Also I've been playing the Bravely Default demo, highly recommended. I'll be nabbing the full version when my birthday comes around.

Nice! I think mine's a Normal group. People like adding me because there's tons of Audinos to kill for EVs. Or something like that.

Oooh! Thoughts on Lords of Shadow 2? I'm so keen for it, but am house sitting and don't have access to my PS3 for the next month and a half, so I haven't bothered picking it up yet. Loved the first game so much.

I just picked up a 3DS, currently playing Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask, but as soon as I'm done with that it'll be up between Pokemon X (because Xerneas is far more majestic than that weird looking bird that Y has) and Bravely Default.

Heck yeah, Xerneas. Was so tempted to name mine "Deer lord he" for the hilarity value the text would provide. I think my safari's poison.

I think I picked Y for something that can only be caught in it, though now I forget what it was, rather than which Legendary I liked. That and because Scint already had X.

All Yveltal (who I named Galactus) does for me anyway is be my Fly Slave.

Well, nobody could agree on how to spell it until fairly recently, anyway. "Faro," the Western (and French) card game is named for the Biblical figure/the title; and the medieval spellings for him tended to be "Faraon."
