Clarifications on Fort Rannick [Spoilers]

Rise of the Runelords

Hey all

For the next game session for my group I'll be running them through the anniversary edition of retaking Fort Rannick. I had some questions I can't seem to figure out.

The chasm at B14 does this lead into area B37?

Also how much knowledge can the Black Arrows give the party. I mean they lived in the keep for years and Vale has some skill with architecture. I'm sure they could draw them decent maps of everything indoors. However am I reading it right that they know nothing of area B37?

I'd also like advice from GM's that have run this before. I'd especially like to know if anyone had to deal with orges make perception checks and showing up in waves. How did you handle this?

Lastly any other gotchas I should be aware of?

Thanks

How do I put this gently?

If the PCs are really silly enough to do a full frontal assault on the fort so that the ogres can make their insanely-pathetic Perception rolls, then they really do deserve what happens to them.

I'm fairly sure you read my thread: My group was insanely careful to go in invisibly, use Silence at every turn, and ensure that the alarm never got raised. Kind of the whole point of Fort Rannick is, "Wow, if we go in guns blazing we're toast." It gets even worse in Module 4, so the PCs need to learn NOW that, "Who cares if we set off the alarms, because we're bada**es," doesn't work against fortresses.

My impression is that the chasm in B14 is nothing more than a chasm; it doesn't lead anywhere.

I gave the Black Arrows knowledge of B37, but had them warn the PCs that it was Shock Lizard mating territory, and therefore too dangerous to go through. My PCs listened.

Remember that the perception check to hear (unsilenced) combat is -10 + 1 per 10' of space + stuff for walls. You'd be amazed how few ogres notice combat. And note that most of the ogres have specific notes on them that if they hear combat, they assume it's nothing and don't bother to investigate. So your PCs have to be really pretty blatant to end up with a wave of ogres.

Good luck! Fort Rannick was a blast for my players!

Ok what about the secret door from area 37 to 36 do the Black Arrows know about that or only the lizards come up to the upper tunnels? I'm also assuming the the Black Arrows could give them a fairly accurate count as to the amount of ogres in the fort..

I'd not say it's too accurate. They made an assault and were repulsed. They would know "over a dozen" but just how many may be up in the air.

Mind you: the group will have three NPCs helping them

Spoiler:
even if one of them is a traitor who wants to flee and report back to the assault's mastermind
. They'll also very likely have Shalelu with them. So the difficulty will be lessened... though it is possible the group may try for diversionary tactics with the NPCs and flank the Ogres or do something else unexpected. So things won't be QUITE as tough, all things considered.
