Advanced D30 edition

Homebrew and House Rules

Liberty's Edge

I just got a D30 again. When asked by the clerk, what game it was for, I said it was for Pathfinder, for the GM when the PCs were killing monsters too quickly.

But seriously, the advanced template gives a +2 to all rolls; this is just +5 on average, maybe round it up to a +6. (But it's more swingy, letting the monsters hit PC ACs way more often. Which is part of the point...) Move the crit range to the end, with +50% on the range (20 -> 29-30, 19-20 -> 28-30, etc.) Like Advanced Creature, we have to add HP, AC and CMD. 3 copies of advanced would be +6 hp/HD, +12 AC and CMD for CR +3, but I think advanced is a little powerful as it is; a CR3 Advanced Aurochs is almost strictly better then a CR 4 Bison (Bestiary pg. 174). Maybe

Daddy's got a D30 Template
Use d30 instead of d20; crit range goes 20 -> 29-30, 19-20 -> 28-30, etc.
+6 hp/HD, +6 AC and CMD, +50% damage for a CR +3.

Opinions? I want a chance to pull this out and put the fear of the D30 into my players, but I want to be fair about it.

I myself own a D30 and have never had a chance to use it, so I'll be wishing you the best and waiting to see how it turns out.

Do they roll the D30 for saving throws too? If so, that's like a +5 to all saves, right? What about skill checks?

I'd suggest taking a look again at those crit ranges, as with a d30 they will have different percentage values. a 29-30 is a good approximation for rolling a 20. A 19-20 (10% chance) would actually be a 27-30 (also 10% chance). 18-20 (15%) as 26-30 (16.6%), 17-20 (20%) as 25-30 (20%), and so on...

My siblings and I have used a D30 for the last 13 or so years. Anytime a character drops to or below 0 Hit Points, you roll D30 vs. Con Score to stay awake. Every Round you are unconscious you can roll a D30 to wake back up. You bleed 1 Hp a round while in Negatives.

Additional House Rules.

Cavalier Class can fight in negatives without a roll.

Also play -9 +Level worth of Negatives. (Ex. Level 9 = Max Negative -18)

Have a couple more uses for the d30 but that is for the most part the only one that comes up each session.

So far, the only thing I use a d30 for is determining the day of the month when I skip time as GM between sessions.

That, and putting the fear of God in my players by threatening to throw the heavy thing at them when they do something spectacularly stupid....

Liberty's Edge

A 27-30 is 4 out of 30; a 10% chance is 28-30. A 20, 18-20, etc. will be over or under by 1.7%, depending on which way you round.

They'd use the D30 whereever they would have used the D20, like the Advanced Simple template added a flat +2 whereever the D20 was used.
