But without CSI Miami, we wouldn't have this.

My vote goes to Lost.

+1 Lost

I'm not sure why Rules of Engagement or Happy Endings weren't both cancelled right away. Patrick Warburton elicits an occasional chuckle, but on the whole neither show makes me laugh or is entertaining in any way.

As with everything in these types of threads, YMMV.

Power Rangers should have probably been cancelled right away too, but I'm glad it wasn't =P

Birds of Prey. It WAS cancelled after one season, and that is what they in fact should have done, therefore it IS a show that should have been cancelled after one season. I weep for what the show could have been in the hands of a better writer and producer (Laeta Kalogiridis should be banned from ever going near any tv series ever). But they tried too hard to tie it into Batman when they in fact should have done the exact opposite (Arrow is getting it right, keeping the ties to DC Continuity light--enough to keep the comic fans alert, but not trying to sell the show based on the merits of an entirely different franchise).

Dollhouse, for weirder reasons. The 1st season had a rocky start but finished really well. So much so that I did hope for a second season at the time. But the second season had a reverse trend--starting strong and ending terrible, so much so that I wish it had in retrospect ended after its first season to keep stronger memories of the good parts.

Heroes, for similar reasons. Great first season. The rest barely watchable.

Oh yes Heroes, forgot about that one. +1

These are all things that should have never existed in the first place, not even had the chance of 1 season.

Agreed, but if they had one season and failed miserably they would serve as a warning to others. Sadly, that's not how that happened.

Honey Boo-Boo reminded me that Amish Mafia should be in this list too!

Silver Crusade

Despite Lost having all it's faults and shortcomings, its still one of my favorite shows ever.

May I addendum the Heroes vote? Not only did it need canceled after Season 1, but I will also add in the Season 1 Finale. This is to all of you who've been tempted to watch the show on Netflix, may I strongly suggest that the second to last episode be your farewell to Heroes. Otherwise, you will be incredibly let down. There's no satisfying payoff. I assure you. This will also keep you from trying season 2, which begins a three year long train wreck. The entire show truly peaks in the episode "Company Man", becoming, I would argue, the finest hour of serial drama that year.

I totally agree with Heroes I though it was very strong in Season 1, and only started to unravel near the finale. Season 2 had potential at first, but was really messed up by the screenwriter's strike. By Episonde 3, it turned into a disjointed mess where characters' motivations and "good/evil" labels seemed to change from scene to scene. And Season 3 was just a steaming pile from the get-go.

I'll disagree with you on Dollhouse. I kind of dug Dollhouse to the end, but I agree that the second half of Season 1 was stronger than most of Season 2 in general.

Another show that should have been cancelled after one season, and thankfully WAS cancelled after one season was:

Galactica 1980

...and to be honest, that show probably should never have existed at all. It was terrible.

Seinfeld, Heroes, Star Trek (any), Star Wars Clone Wars, CSI (any), all those american sitcoms revolving around a dysfunctional relationship (King of Queens, According to Jim, Anger Management etc.), 'reality' tv, talent shows, Big Bang Theory, the Nanny, Fawlty Towers, any of those 60's shows like MASH, Knight Rider, Dukes of Hazzard, Lost, any hospital series, any and all soaps (including modern variants like Sex + City, Desperate Housewives), the A Team, The Walking Dead, The X-files, Doctor Who, Angel, Buffy, Charmed, Dexter, Battlestar Galactica, 24, Stargate (both) and House.

That's just off the top of my head.

I'd have loved to see all these canceled and after 1 season they have all ran to much

Now I will add in NCIS, Blue Bloods, and all the other Cop, Lawyer, Dr shows on network TV

Firefly, buffy, etc. You all know me by now, so I had to put out the usual stuff first . -1 on lost, although the show got really really convoluted after a while, it remains excellent television for the most part. Although I love jokes made at its expense. I'll add alphabet soup cop shows to the list.

Apologies as I agree with your sentiment but for the sake of factual accuracy I must point out that Deadliest Catch was a Discovery Channel show not a History channel show.

Big Bang is fun. I'm a Geek and I love it.

I've got to stick up for DC. It *is* educational, and scientific. (Like when they deal with all those ice flows that global warming fearmongers shouldn't be there) :P

I agree, though perhaps what's needed is a channel just for those shows, so the fans who keep them going can't mess with those of us who want to watch some History/Science/et al.

If Lost was cancelled after 1 season it would have been the next Firefly.
Everyone would still be praising it for being this brilliant show and cancelling it was a huge travesty.

The world would never have known how far it would fall and how terribly it ended.

I swear even Battlestar Galactica points and laughs at Lost for having a terrible finale.

Quote:

Most certainly not.

Spoiler:
LOST's ending is horribly saccharine. The flash-sideways turning out to be a flash-forwards to the afterlife is pointless, tedious and vomit-inducingly cheesy. It also wastes a ton of screen time that could have been better spent developing the Temple Others, or the Man in Black, or perhaps alluding more to the Water Cave Plug Drain of Destiny, all of which as it stands feels a bit random.

Still, taking all of that into account and jettisoning the sideways/afterlife stuff (which you can literally do: one hardy soul has done a Phantom Edit-style re-edit of Season 6 which cuts all of it out), LOST's finale does (somewhat, if you squint a bit) make sense and is in keeping with the themes of the show. It also doesn't bottle out and does kill off a substantial number of characters who really shouldn't have made it to the end. The show also doesn't betray it's own premise, with the science/faith struggle that's been on the show since Day 1 still being core to what's going on.

BSG's ending, on the other hand, makes no kind of coherent sense. Not only are key questions totally ignored (what happened to the dozens of additional basestars Cavill had under his command? Are there any more Cavill copies around? What was the whole point of the constellations in the Temple of Athena which the show spent half a season developing?), but the ending asks us to believe that 100% of the Fleet would agree to throwing away their technology and going to knock boots with some cavemen. The same Fleet which rebelled against Adama and Roslin seven episodes earlier for constantly endangering their lives and not having a clue WTH they were doing? I think not. Also, Starbuck as a season-long deus ex machina was a really horrendous idea, and showed that the writers did not have a clue what the hell they were doing.

Maybe it's because BSG-at-it's-best was vastly superior to LOST-at-it's-best, so it had much further to fall, but I find BSG's ending offensively stupid on a level that LOST's can only aspire to (though it is hardly flawless).

Heroes and Alias are really the only shows I can think of that I watched that had a good first season but whose later seasons I pretend didn't exist.

Supernatural and X-files should have only lasted 5 seasons

Battlestar Galactica should have lasted 2 seasons (or maybe 2.5)

Millenium 2 seasons as well

Chuck 3 seasons

Survivor : XXXX (insert place name here)

Sovereign Court RPG Superstar 2009 Top 32, 2010 Top 8

Ok... I guess for people who are giving lists, why?

Murder one, for example, was a beautiful show in its first season. The second season (like so many reality TV shows now) tried catching 'lightning in a bottle' from the first, and failed horribly.

If they'd just left it at one season, it would have been a unique piece, but they tried to take a colour masterpiece (season one) and run it through a photocopier.

I guess I can expound on my list comment earlier.

Firstly there is not much Reality in "Reality TV" and the shows don't really put much effort into hiding the fact that most of the things shown are scripted, forced or just out of character acts put on for the camera. Yeah sure you'll show your face on national TV with your real name if your running shine in rural VA.

Secondly I hate how so many of them glorify the worst aspects of human nature. We have multiple shows spanning multiple seasons that are basically about people scheming and conniving their way into a celebrity marriage just for the high profile they get out of it for Christ's sake. Would people like Simon Cowl be a household name if they didn't act like complete bastards on national TV. The most well know and "popular" members of the casts of the Survivor shows were the backstabbers and "villians".

Thirdly there are far too many of them wearing out the same premise over and over. Do we really need five different shows with multiple seasons about how dangerous and costly gold mining is in different terrain? or how dangerous it is to be a roughneck cutting down trees? or how bad the roads are in India compared to here in the states? Or how a random junk dealer in a random city has people bring him "historic artifacts". One of each would be plenty or in some cases more than enough.

Not all shows that fall in this category are bad shows of course things like say Dirty Jobs, Mythbusters, Good Eats, Iron Chef, Bizarre Foods, 10 things you didn't know, How the States Got their shapes. All pretty good shows that fall in the "Reality" category and don't lower the collective IQ of the population.

..wow sorry about the rant but yeah It just feels that we as a culture are making people dumber with this stuff and it drives me nuts.

Going to go ahead and dispute Heroes slightly, since they canceled it right after it got good again. =/

Season 1 was good, 2 was alright, and 3 sucked, but season 4 was good too and it had a nice set-up for a new season.

Though I guess the fact that I had to look up how many seasons there were exactly may have contributed to its demise. "Books" pfft.
