Fleet Rules What do you Think

Skull & Shackles

So I just finished reading through Price of Infamy. The fleet rules are very streamlined. I can see it making short work a big fleet battle. However it did not seem terribly dynamic. I will have to see it in action.

Flag ships were essentially out of play. You cannot attack or damage a flagship until the fleet battle is resolved. That seems odd given that one strategy in a case like this to break up a fleet would be to focus attack on the flagship.

Has anyone else gone over the fleet rules or played through it.

Has no one played through the fleet rules.

I haven't started the AP yet (but hope to this January). If you look through some of the past Skull & Shackles messages, you'll see a few threads discussing the ship-to-ship combat rules. Here are two of the more interesting ones ...

This one talks a bit about ship combat and several folks' experiences with it. It goes into some of the real world history of naval warfare and also offers a few suggested in-game modifications for ship combat.

This one offers some interesting options for including the whole party in ship combat.

Hope that helps. If not, ask some specific questions and I'm sure someone will chime in and help you out!

Yeah I loved the one about the whole party helping. The fleet rules come into play in part 5. The are a way to move from one ship versus another ship to whole fleets. They are even more streamlined than the ship to ship rules because it is intended for battles with 30-40 ships on each side.

Likely if the PCs want to target the flagship durring the fleet battles I am going to have to tweak things so that the Fleet fighting continues in the back ground and move to ship to ship and then boarding. Durring which time rather than have the PCs fleet chose what gets damaged within their fleet move to a random ship damged durring the time the flagship focuses attention on the enemy flagship. I don't know if that fixes all the kinks I just found it unnecessarily prohibititve for the flagships to not be at risk or part of the combat until the fleet battle was resolved.
