I only get about 20 minutes of work out of my back at a time these days, but i suppose i'll get the tree out of my roof eventually...
Not before I have a swimming pool in the basement.

Meh. I'm about to go out and rake the leaves in my yard, in case this storm brings snow to central New York, but I'm not terribly worried about my property.
I am concerned about my other half, who has a 75-min drive to work every day, and she ends up driving over hills and through valleys that might be affected by flooding.

Just because I am resolute in my city's ability to withstand bad weather doesn't mean people should take risks- can you convince her to stay home?

It looks like Sandy is going to make landfall in Deleware/Maryland as opposed to South Jersey than barrel up through Pennslyvania. I'm not sure, but I think she ate Terry before he could grow up properly into a hurricane.
She's still a big monster of a storm though, and when she combines with that winter storm already in the area, she's going to supercharge that precipitation.

I wish the reporting on the storm predictions was a little more nuanced. My out of town family is like, "What about all that snow?"
Me: "Snow in 60 degree weather?"
Them: "But that storm surge..."
Me: "...would suck if I lived on the coast."
In seriousness, though, I hope everyone in the area is prepared and stays safe.

When they started showing the weather patterns for 'Frankenstorm' I remembered this British SciFi effort: Superstorm.
Looks like they may have gotten it right!
BTW, I'm in Pittsburgh, Pa. They're saying it might even get this far.
Fun times.

Another Brooklynite here. All public trains, subways, and buses will be suspended as of 7PM tonight.
We live down on the Gerritsen Beach/Marine Park border, 1 block north of the evac zone.
Fun times! My biggest concerns are the roof leaking and losing internet! :)
Dood, I am currently one block neighborhood away from you. Cool. PAIZO BROOKLYN.

Oh good, just tell the water it isn't allowed on your block...
Get out of there! I don't want to have to stop by and get you in a rowboat

Going into work tonight and hoping nothing but a lot of rain happens. I'm not worried about flooding here, but the last time a storm knocked out power it took 2 1/2 days to get it back. Here in central Maryland, that's downright annoying.
My dad and step-mom live maybe 10 miles up the road from me ... they had to wait over a week to get power back after the Doricho (or whatever it was called) in late June/ early July.
Missus Turin & I didn't lose power for very long - mostly it went off while we were asleep coming back up a few hours later. Living in NVa helps I suppose. We're also in a primarily underground power area and we're maybe a mile or two from the local county's northern water treatment plant. The substation for that plant is about a quarter-mile away.
Pretty much we're probably in good shape as far as power goes unless something tears down the transmission lines that supply our substation or the sump pump is overloaded.
5-10 inches of rain & 60 mph wind gusts for ~36 hours is going to make things interesting.
Good luck everyone!

My shift was the last one to work today and, although there is a chance work will be cancelled tonight, we'll most likely be the first shift to go back, too.
What good is a Frankenstorm if everyone gets the day off but me?
:(
Well, the likelyhood of things not remaining closed down for at least Tuesday in addition to today is pretty remote if Frankenstorm does what it's probably going to do.
Combine that with the ensuing tree, power line and flooding carnage ... good chance of at least 2, maybe 3 days off ...

Prayers going out to you folks up there.
Really hoping more are taking preparations seriously than the news seems to be suggesting. Just heard the Bounty replica is sinking now.
Well, the locals were stocking up on everything that remotely seems useful in this scenario. Sandbags, sand, flashlights, batteries, easy-heat foodstuffs, water ... the staples were largely wiped out by mid-afternoon yesterday.
The wind and rain started tick up at sunset yesterday. It's probably going to do the same thing this evening.
I'm glad we're not in the mountains to the west and north ... they're looking at at least a foot or two of early snow dumped in a hurry.

I hope so, but they already hooked up the generator in a trailer...

Doesn't do much good if the roads are washed out / flooded. ;)

I used to live near that area when I was younger and my Dad worked in one of the shipyards as an engineer.

The worst of the storm just left the Hampton Roads/Newport News/VA Beach area. Prince William County - about 30 miles south of DC, more or less - is starting to see the nasty 60-80 mph wind gusts as this is typed.
Missus Turin & I will see the fugliness in the next 2 hours or so.
Cape May, NJ (southern NJ - Delaware vicinity) is probably going to get jacked up about 5 pm EST. Sustained winds in Ocean City are 40 - 60 mph with water already a meter deep, getting into homes and basements.
The pier at Kill Devil Hills, NC was smashed into chunks. The fishing piers at Rehobeth Beach, DE and Ocean City, MD are already gone, washed out to sea.
