How to improve the use of a summoner over time?

Advice

OK when I look at the summoner, I see that the real beast in the eidolon NOT the summoner, I have the feeling that the summoner is only here to buff his eidolon.

One of my PC started as a summoner. In general I try to have cool items and things for my PC, specialy customized for them.

So... My question is .. what can i propose to the summoner. He's not a fighter, not really a spellcaster .... any ideas are more than welcome.

The whole point of the summoner class is that the eidolon is the focus. Trying to counter this is countering the class' entire goal. The only really way to bring the focus back to the character is the combine the two with the synthesist archetype. The master summoner archetype also does this to a lesser extent, but then the focus is just on the tons of beasties the summoner can bring to the fight.

Eh...you "could" build your Eidelon to be a mount and go the mounted combat route, but that severely gimps your capabilities as a team and would be better off rerolling a paladin or cavalier.

Thats the only real way I can see the summoner playing a bigger role than the Eidelon, but as was already stated...the summoner is cool BECAUSE he has the Eidelon not the other way around.

If you want to give the PC something cool, make the cool item something the eidolon can use, not the summoner.

I have a tremendous mounted Summoner build that in no way gimps the team, and offers a lot more versatility and damage potential than any Paladin or Cavalier.

Half Elven 19th level Summoner / 1st level Fighter

Attributes: (20 point build)
STR - 16 (+2 racial bonus, +2 at 11th, 15th and 17th level)
INT - 10
WIS - 10
DEX - 14
CON - 12
CHA - 13 (+1 at 4th, 8th, 12th, 16th and 20th level)

Feats:
1st Power Attack
1st Skill Focus: Survival
3rd Combat Reflexes
5th Furious Focus
7th Eldritch Heritage: Orc Bloodline (Touch of Rage)
9th Arcane Armor Training
9th Arcane Armor Mastery
11th Improved Eldritch Heritage: Orc Bloodline (Strength of the Beast)
13th Extend Spell
15th Arcane Strike
17th Greater Eldritch Heritage: Orc Bloodline (Power of Giants)
19th Quicken Spell

The character fights with a longspear beside his eidolon until 9th level where he adds a level of Fighter to gain proficiency with armor and the lance at the same time his eidolon gains the Large and Mount evolutions. From astride his eidolon he gains full benefit of Shield Ally and Greater Shield Ally as well as always being within touch range for Touch of Rage or spells like Dimension Door. When casting spells he uses his swift action for Arcane Armor Mastery (wearing mithril full plate) and when making a charge attack he uses Arcane Strike to add to that double damage. By level 17 he can become Large at will, gaining another bonus to STR, CON and natural armor while his eidolon becomes Huge.

The two make for a devastating pair.

Now, if you don't want to be all about the eidolon, go Master Summoner - its my favorite character archetype.

My fault may be I'm not clear about it.

I perfectly understand that the whole point of the summoner IS the Eidolon. My question is more like "which magic items would make the summoner say "Yeah I'd really love to have that".

In the case of my character above, a keen shocking lance, fortified mithril full plate, belt of physical perfection, headband of alluring charisma, ring of protection, cloak of resistance, amulet of mighty fists (for the eidolon), etc.

Why not just ask your player?

Be honest and say that you just want to make sure you give him something HE wants and will find useful. He may surprise you.

My son's summoner is also a mounted type, but built a bit differently. We are only at 7th level so far, but he is enjoying it.

20 pt buy:

STR: 14 (+1 at 4th)
DEX: 12
CON: 14
INT: 10
WIS: 10
CHR: 18 (+2 Human)

1st - Spell Focus: Conjuring
1st - Martial Weapon Prof: Lance
3rd - Mounted Combat
5th - Ride-by Attack
7th - Spirited Charge

Wand of Enlarge Person makes the Eidolon large enough to ride.

Eidolon is built as a dragon:

Limbs (Legs)x2(0), Bite x2(1), Ability: +2 STR(2), Claws(1), Mount(1), Flight(2), Pounce(1), Tail(1), Tail Slap(1)

Power Attack, Fly-by Attack, Death From Above

Eidolon has Amulet of Mighty Fists (Corrosive)
Summoner has Knight's pennon (Battle), +1 Corrosive Lance, Rhino Hide Armor

On a flying charge, the summoner attacks most enemies with the Lance at +13 (BAB 5, STR +2, Lance +1, charge +2, higher ground +1, Pennon +2)

Dealing an average of 54 pts of damage on a hit [Lance 1d8+1(5.5)+ acid 1d6(3.5)+ Armor 2d6(7)+ STR(2)= 18 x3 = 54

The Eidolon contributes with a full attack and then flies away to keep from being hit in return:

Bite 1d8+7(11.5) + Claws 2d6+10(17) + Tail Slap 1d8+2(6.5) + acidx4 4d6(14) + Power attackx4(16) = 65

Average Damage if everything hits from rider and eidolon = 119
range = 64-180

I started up a half orc summoner for PFS, and he is a pretty good combatant on his own. 18 Str and great axe use makes for an effective damage dealer. An enlarge person on myself makes for a 3d6+7 attack at first level. That's an average of 17.5 damage per hit with a +4 bonus to hit (+5 when i get a masterwork axe). Sure, my eidolon still can do more with the same buff, 2(1d8+3), 1d6+3 for full attack with pounce (average of 21.5), but that is only a +3 to hit,or +5 on the charge. I could have built the eidolon for less dps and more utility to make my character more of the focus.

Thanks all for your suggestions.... Thanks Ossian. I followed your advice and that is probably the best advice I could have had in fact.
