Idea proposal: "Optimize This Scenario" contest

Liberty's Edge 4/5

There's a lot of talk about the relative difficulty/ease of some PFS scenarios.

Why not create a contest open to all PFS members allowing them to optimize encounters from a Paizo-approved list of scenarios?

There would have to be some rules/guidelines, but I think you'd see a lot of talent and new ideas emerge as a result of such a venture.

It may give rise to some cool ideas that published writers hadn't considered, thus bumping-up community knowledge and improving the game overall.

Thoughts?

I doubt that Mark/Mike would have the time or inclination to do this.

However, if we could get a few encounters nominated by the posters at large, and then pick say 10, then people could give it a shot.

This would be interesting to see.

Keep in mind though, that the rule of running a scenario as written still stands, regardless of whether any of these ideas are better or not.

Keep Kyle Baird away from this.

Agreed. I like the idea of having the community select "winners" themselves.

My goal would not be to have these changes made official, rather, to give valuable, creative and free feedback to the authors. The community has always been part of Pathfinder. Why not tap into that creative and intellectual pool and see what amazing ideas and tweaks our fellow players can come up with.

It could be something as simple as this:

"Using the flipmat [Name of flipmat], create an OPTIMIZED, dynamic battlefield scenario using core assumption books for a tier 5-6 encounter, legal for PFS play".

Or do the same thing but for a scenario from a previous season. Just a thought. :)

Seems like this effort could be better spent writing submissions for the new Open Call....

1 person marked this as a favorite.

I would be interested to see what people would do with an "Optimize this Roleplaying scene" challenge. Can you add more subtext, allusions, foreshadowing, depth or emotional content to the scene?

Who would be up for that challenge?

If you mean create a scenerio from scratch, see the 'get involved' page.
If you mean have a contest to involve the community with future PFS scenarios, see RPGSS.
If you mean take scenerio X, encounter three and improve, you might have something. :) (legal issues aside).
Andrew is right though, it would have to be a very small number for the Decemvirate to even have time.

So you want us to turn all non-combat sections of scenarios into "that's what she said" sprees?

;)

That's what I mean. And yes, legal issues would have to be dealt with. Alas...I was hoping for some official word to okay this or to quash it.

Again, the idea of taking a flipmat and giving specific stipulations might also render the same, eye-opening results. Though I'm still not sure about the legal issues involved.

I think optimizing encounters would be a cool way to get the community at large to share their creative talents using a relatively short form.

The reason I like this idea rather than just submitting to the open call is: I never get to see all the neat ideas that are rejected. Simple as that. :)

Anyway, I wanted to bring the topic up and see what people think.

My last thought on a tangential topic: I'd love to see one "Optimized" scenario per season! Really get players heads spinning!

Cheers and with respect.

Silverhand: Played Storval Stairs yet? Play up, bring a 5 man party.

And a lot of diamonds.

I PMed you about this. :) Yes, I GMed KofSS and I'll be doing it again this Thursday.

I'm just wondering what the purpose is? Even if you go back and make an encounter amazing, we can't use it and Paizo doesn't have the resources to edit the scenario.

What is "optimal"? For some people, it means making the encounter tougher. For other people, it means making the encounter weaker. For people like me, it means making the encounter more interesting and unique.

Anyway, I'd be into it I guess, just for fun.

Those are different talents and skill sets. Some people are good coming up with story frameworks (scenario overview, which I believe the open call handles), others with the story within the framework (the main work of most scenario authors), and yet others are good with details (encounter building. Some authors have great imaginations but really struggle with this). They're 3 different jobs/skills. I'm good with storyline and details, but I struggle with framework. Other people are the opposite.

Anyway, when you make the rules and get it approved, I'll do one for fun.
