My players often get distracted looking at ponies and the like on that iPad thingamajig. I mean, ponies are awesome and all, but I'm trying to set the scene.

That is why i have a phone basket policy. I understand thst we live in the real world and that life happens, (i had to cancel a session three months ago and just yesterday because both of my grandparents passed away). So i have a nice woven basket near the table in which all of us includong me put our phones. So if it's an emergency they are within reach. I also strongly discourage texting, and ask my players to tell their significant others to call if they need something. There is nothing that breaks immersion like a player fidgeting nervously.

Well, using the cell phone has never been a problem in the games I was involved in - it is used if really needed, and stays in its bag when not. OTOH, we mostly play at somebodies home, and if the phone rings, it is picked up of course.
If you have something like work or family matters and they need to be able to reach you, this is understandable for most GMs, I think. Fiddling with it the whole time is not.
