Oracles, what to do?

Grand Lodge 2/5 **

I've finally decided what to do with my Tengu cert, I'm making an Oracle.

Unfortunately, I haven't played a divine caster since 2nd edition so I have NO idea what I am doing.

I haven't even decided what Mystery to take, and whether or not to take the Tengu racial substitution for Oracle.

Does anyone have any general advice for a fun, playable Oracle who hasn't played a divine caster in a LONG time?

Edit: and by the way: WOOT! My first one-star post!

I love Oracles (and spontaneous casters in general) but they are much more specialized than Clerics since they have a limited spell list, so you will need to decide what "role" you want to fill in the party. Oracles can excel in many ways, they can be battle-oriented, focused on buffs, skill monkeys, or make excellent healers (I have heard multiple times that they are better straight up healers than Clerics if you build them with healing in mind.) So, the first question is, what kind of Oracle do you want to play?

Also, congrats on your first star! :)

Well I'm retiring a support Summoner this month, and I have two-handed critical Fighter, so a straight-up buff monkey or warrior type should be out.

Take a look at the oracle of lore. You can rather quickly start tossing out some truly insane knowledge checks (an easy 30+) at first level. Couple with some of the nastier cleric spells (murderous command, hold person, etc), you can be fairly effective. Or take a look at the oracle of Life, they can make for some truly fantastic healers. Oracle of the Heavens can straight up end fights with their enhanced color spray abilities. Oracle of Stone gives you some rather unique scouting options. All in all, take a look at the various mysteries, figure out the theme or flavor of your oracle, and run with it.

There is actually a Tengu specific Oracle Archetype in the ARG you may want to look at if you intend to heavily rock the Tien vibe. The Seeker is an awesome Pathfinder-esque Oracle/Sorcerer archetype as well (PFS Field Guide)that gives the Oracle trapfinding/the ability to disable magical traps.

In terms of mysteries, a lot of what was said above I agree with. Oracle of Battle is actually an awesome war priest. Or, if you just want oodles of healing, Oracle of Life is the way to go =D.

I would recommend planning out your spell choices in advance! If you want some recommendations, I can PM you.
