Why should you respect the village elder? Because he's a 6th level expert and you're just a level 1 party. His "Knowledge: Things That Want To Kill You" skill is higher than yours. Listen to his advice.

I'd agree with that if his bab and hp didn't go up.

6th level Old Expert:

Str 6 Dex 7 Con 5 Int 16 Wis 14 Cha 13

AC: 8 HP: 18

Attack: Dagger +2 (1d4-2)

Saves: Fortitude -1 Reflex +0 Will +7

So, more HP than most 1st level characters...but less than most 2nd level ones. Nothing else remotely on par with a 1st level guy combat-wise.

Fair enough.

I would like to point out though that gaining levels should be something not everyone does. As a paramedic I can vouch for the fact that some people get worse as time passes and that only 1-2 skill points per level is realistic.
