Gonna do a one-shot of Hangman's Noose... what level should the PCs be?

Adventures

I'm going to visit friends in a couple weeks and do a one-shot adventure using Hangman's Noose. I know it says it's for Level 1 adventurers, but I don't plan to reward XP because...

Spoiler:
It all takes place over the course of one night. If I followed the rules, we'd be leveling up twice in the middle of the adventure. It kind of breaks believability for me, and it has the characters get more powerful when I want to be building a sense of dread.

Does anyone who has played through Hangman's Noose have a thought on what level I should have the PCs be? Also, this is a one-shot so I do want the difficulty scaled quite high with a reasonable chance of death if they're not careful. And I might have anywhere between 4 and 6 players.

Thanks in advance :)

I'd run for level 1 characters. There really aren't a ton of fights as it is, and you would only once if using the fast rules (I'm pretty sure). If you are worried about the pcs part way through, add a few magic items to the mix, healing potions, a magic weapon, etc.

Plus you can always sacrifice NPCs if the PCs get in over their heads.

Not sure I understand your post fully - you're saying we'd level-up only once? I don't want to level-up during the module, though.

I do find your suggestion helpful, of throwing magic items in the mix - I can always have the option of throwing in a CLW wand, whatever level I start at.

Sorry- I know you didn't want the PCs to level. What I meant was you shouldn't level at all using the medium or slow xp tracks, so it be fine to not have the PCs level in a one-shot. Sorry for the confusion.

I don't know though - I'm guessing that the module assumes the characters level-up because (1) under 3.5 rules especially, the characters do level up. (The first 7 keyed rooms alone -- CR 1, CR 2, CR 3, CR 1/2, CR 1, and CR 5 -- advance a party of four characters to Level 2.) And (2) there are encounters that are CR 3, CR 3, CR 4, CR 4, CR 4, and CR 5. This seems like an awful lot to pile onto a Level 1 party that doesn't have a chance to rest.

Looking at the CRs, I think I'm going to go with a Level 2 party if I have four players...

An idea I have been toying with regarding this adventure - why not make your party level 2 - or even 3, perhaps - but have some or all of their levels be in NPC classes? This works better if you plan a one-off where 'normal people' characters as opposed to 'adventurers' have been sucked into the event.

Mmm, that's a good idea. I'll consider it -- there's an off chance that this might blossom into more adventures, so we'll have to see.
