Psychic Warrior as main melee

Product Discussion

I notice the addition to the psionic classes to the pathfinder game from the psionic unleashed book. So I was wondering is the psychic warrior good as the main melee of the group? Or does it suffer too much from the 3/4 bab and d8 hit die. Does the Warmind PrC class try to mitigate that loss and gives it some nice abilities or is it not worth it? What kind of build would be efficient in providing melee power in a group? Thanks

I find the Psychic Warrior to be a very reasonable for frontline melee. 3/4 BAB is mitigated by their Path abilities, and their self-buffs can be quite scary.

It will do quite well as frontliner though you have to keep yourself from going nova in easier encounters.

Have to agree there. Like a lot of 3/4 casters, they get a lot scarier once they advance enough to start getting all-day buffs and can afford to use their other powers more often.

I'd also strongly suggest half-giant if you're playing a Psychic Warrior; their stat boosts go into strength and your casting stat, and Powerful Build is just a wonderful racial.

This thread has some more useful PsyWar stuff.

perhaps the most wonderful.

It's especially nice on the Psychic Warrior, because growing is one of the best tricks you get. Going up to Huge Size and swinging a Gargantuan weapon will really give you some nice damage dice (6d6 with a Greatsword, I believe).

Is Warmind the PrC class worth taking to be more of a melee character or is full Psychic Warrior better to fit the melee role?

Haven't looked at it since pfrpg rewrite, but in 3.5 there was an amazing ability for some builds, I think it was sweeping strikes. You could choose an adjacent square and use your attack roll to hit creatures in that square as well. If that still remains, there are definite possibilities.

Yes I think the Warmind Prc gets that ability around the higher levels. I'm not sure how it works, is it basically like cleave?

This what I thought of as a character with 15 point buy

Level 3 Half Gaint Psychic Warrior

Str: 17 (+2 racial)
Dex: 12 (-2 racial)
Con: 14
Int: 10
Wis: 14 (+2 racial)
Cha: 7

Just not sure what feats and psychic powers would be good for a main melee tank character. Also would the Prc Warmind help that type of character concept?

For melee, you'll want the standard basic buffs that directly boost AC or attack power (Stuff like thicken skin, metaphysical weapon, etc).

Expansion is a great melee power, especially since it augments very nicely. Going up two size categories and eventually being able to quicken it and increase the duration to 10 min/level keeps it relevant even into the late game. That's one of the interesting things about the psychic warrior power list; a lot of your best powers are not high-level abilities, but augmented first or second-level powers.

Hustle is another great power for melee; getting an extra move action is just incredibly useful, especially for only three power points.
