I've heard one possible reason for keeping in identification is for the Auction House. You can likely auction unidentified items and it becomes a bit of a lottery.
Good point and it becomes a kind of lottery for everyone, the buyer and seller.
Edit: What would be a good price for something that one know's nothing about? 1,000G?

Once you identify an item and put it in the auction house, can others see the properties of the item, too? Or is the person that wins auction going to have to ID it agian?
I'm not sure but if someone you play with online identifies and item and then give it to you, the item will be already identified for you. I think it works the same way with the auction house (identified items are identified for everyone)
