SHADOWLANDS Kicktarter release -- Conversion Guide and 1st level module

Product Discussion

Did anyone else get their advance PDFs for the Shadowlands campaign setting yet?

I have started reading the Conversion Guide. After my current campaign wraps up, I really want to run a campaign set in Saemyyr.

The setting is a bit too ... how to put this nicely ... persnickety ... in some aspects. For example: whilst I love the fact that money is called different things in different regions, I will NEVER remember all of these trivial details, and the Conversion Guide puts a lot (too much) emphasis on how important these differences are. I play rpg's to get away from stuff like this in real life, not to simulate it all in-game.

I haven't come across any typos yet, which is a Plus. Layout-wise, it's very nice, though I think some creative editing would have eliminating a few clunky word-breaks.

Minor nitpicks aside, it's a very creative setting and I'm enjoying it very much.

I expected that level of detail just from the opening paragraph on Kickstarter, as it states things are "rigorously realistic" and bases magic more on "hard sci-fi mashup than fantasy hand-waving" (with hard science fiction being "characterized by an emphasis on scientific or technical detail, or on scientific accuracy, or on both"). That was a bit too much for me and funding was short, so I didn't back the effort.

The good thing is one can usually ignore certain levels of detail as needed to enjoy a game.

It has been nominated for an ENnie for Best Free Product, and I think it's well deserved. Any news about other Shadowlands releases?

Oh, and cartography.

Sovereign Court

Anyone played with this stuff? Just seen they've got a CS kickstarter.

The conversion guide didn't grab me... one of those with 4 types of elf, 3 types of dwarf, 18 different versions of common, etc.

The preview adventure suffers from the same: interesting enough adventure for a GM who enjoys the setting but built around a metric tonne of background which players will never really figure out.

It is promoted as having been developed over 15 years. Seems like that 15 years has been spent crafting forbidding complexity.

I could be wrong though, not played with it, just read it.

Any play experience?
