Maybe we should show every player how to optimize but this seems like micro managing and also it’s like saying sub-optimal characters are some how broken.

Many poorly built characters are broken, in the same way that a totally twinked out build is broken too -- and for the same reason: the character cannot perform as expected within the sub-tier for which the character is ostensibly intended. Being ineffective if just as broken as being able to wipe out the opposition single-handedly without breaking a sweat.

Yes, we should show players how to build more effectively because there is no other viable longterm solution to this intractable problem of public RAW play.

We have been doing this in our Pathfinder Lodge and have a weekly column written by one of our more rules' centric Player/GMs to assist new players. He also shows up to one of our stores an hour before game time to help people with their character designs.

The result? It's working. Spotlight stealing is vanishing and newer players are enjoying their playtime more.

Nothing succeeds like success; nothing fails like failure.

So this might be a situation that is inherent in organized play. When the games are public then this is what happens. We become a group of unequal equals.

Exactly right.
