Nightflier's Homebrew Recruitment Thread

Recruitment

Dark Archive

So, my experience with PBPs is mixed one. I have one game with almost 6000 posts, that is about two years old, and I have a new game that is quite young, but it should ramp up a thousand posts any day now. The others mostly burned out, either because of players who lost the interest, or myself - because I got disappointed by the slow rhythm of the game.

I can't guarantee you that this game will not end the same way, but I'll try anyway.

So, I have this city in my home game, called Kaledun. The city is kind of Absalom, mixed with Ptolus, Kaer Maga and Korvossa. It is located in a small country that is essentially no man's land between two great states - Overduchy of Hohenbaurg and Sultanate of Tamur. The District and City of Kaledun was once ruled by Despot, but the last despot disappeared a hundred years ago, and after that the rule of the city fell to a Major, elected by various power-groups.

I will post more about the city itself, and the surrounding area, but - essentially, this is high-magic, high-power setting, appropriate for min-maxers, but with a lot of role playing involved.

I want to explore some of the aspects of the role-playing in the city environment, so I decided to start yet another pbp - hopefully, one that will last for thousands and thousands posts. :)

But there is a catch - character development will be a bit constrained. That is, I am looking for a specific combinations of races and classes. So, the character creation rules are as follows:

1) 4d6, drop the lowest, or 30 point buy - decided after the rolling for stats.

2) 1st level characters; max HPs and starting gold.

3) Two traits chosen from the list of traits that can be found by clicking on my profile and two traits chosen from any source published by Paizo.

4) 1 bonus feat in addition to all the other feats that characters receive at 1st level.

5) Upon creation, each character will receive a Heroic Path - a set of bonuses and abilities that you gain every level and are worth about a half of standard class level. This sets you as a hero chosen by fate (or whatever).

Race/class combos:

1) Asimar martial-oriented cleric.

2) Nagaji martial-oriented sorcerer.

3) Drow two-weapon soulknife (Dreamscarred Press)

4) Elven archer (Kobold Quarterly 20)

5) Samsaran witch

6) Tiefling ninja (called "assassin" in the game world)

The idea is for interested players to apply for certain race/class combo. The most interesting characters will be accepted, as well as two reserve characters, just in case.

Daily posting during the weekdays is required, though. Interaction between players is encouraged.

The basic premise of the game is that you are mercenaries from the Korvossa's Sable Company, called on a contract to another world. Your personal histories should be, therefore, tied to Golarion.

That's all for now. I hope that this game idea is interesting to enough folks.

Sczarni

I'd like to throw in for the tiefling ninja!

4d6 ⇒ (2, 3, 5, 2) = 12
4d6 ⇒ (5, 1, 3, 2) = 11
4d6 ⇒ (6, 4, 2, 4) = 16
4d6 ⇒ (6, 6, 2, 2) = 16
4d6 ⇒ (5, 2, 6, 4) = 17
4d6 ⇒ (4, 3, 1, 4) = 12

Final stats would be 10, 10, 14, 14, 15, 11 or the equivalent to 18 point buy.

I will stick with these, or upgrade to 30 point buy at your discression. Ill put up a proposed build asap.

Lantern Lodge

I'd be down for the Aasimar Cleric

4d6 ⇒ (6, 1, 2, 4) = 13
4d6 ⇒ (3, 6, 6, 5) = 20
4d6 ⇒ (6, 4, 1, 3) = 14
4d6 ⇒ (3, 1, 6, 2) = 12
4d6 ⇒ (2, 5, 6, 3) = 16
4d6 ⇒ (5, 1, 6, 1) = 13

Lantern Lodge

That's a 12, 17, 13, 11, 15, 12

I'll go with the 30 pt buy

I'll roll up a sansaran witch.

dice:
4d6 ⇒ (3, 2, 3, 1) = 9
4d6 ⇒ (4, 2, 4, 4) = 14
4d6 ⇒ (4, 1, 3, 6) = 14
4d6 ⇒ (5, 6, 4, 5) = 20
4d6 ⇒ (2, 6, 5, 6) = 19
4d6 ⇒ (3, 3, 1, 1) = 8

So, (8, 12, 13, 16, 17, 7) = 22pt

So, I guess I'll do a 30pt buy.

One thing that you should know: You may apply for multiple characters and you may apply for a character that other folks applied for.

Doing Deception patron. Not sure what direction to go with on back story, should we worry about that yet?

Dark Archive

Your characters will be chosen based on their backstories, so right now I am more interested in their personal histories than crunch.

This recruitment will be open until the end of the week. If I don't get enough applications, I'll start another recruitment thread for another game, perhaps set in Golarion or Eberron or some other world.

For back story writing purposes, what is happening in the present that we are hooking into with our pasts? (not sure how to better ask that question)

i.e. what is the premise at the start of the game that we need to write towards? The opening scene, if you will.

Dark Archive

You are members of a mercenary company based in Korvossa. Your company accepted bodyguard contract on another world, so you are sent there. The opening scene of the game will be you arriving at your destination via plane-hopping ship. Your personal histories should be tied to Golarion. Everything published by Paizo is allowed.

Ahh that's awesome. :) This should be a fun one. I'll get to planning.

Sczarni

That is fun! I'm going to work on my backstory right now! I'll have something up soon.

Sczarni

This is just a rough mock-up. I would love your feedback Nightflier.

Matthias Dren, Tiefling ninja:

Matthias Dren is a slave from Cheliax, but he is a special kind of slave.

Matthias is not the kind of slave who fetches food, or washes clothing.

Matthias is a tiefling; this is good for him.

When your mistress is a wealthy, superstitious diabolist and you are a manipulative rake spawned by the very devils your mistress worships, certain opportunities become available…let’s just say Matthias is a specialized servant. He kills the enemies of the family. At least he will now that school is out.

As a child, the young tiefling lied, threatened, flattered, and stole his mistress into sending him to train with the Tien ninjas. There he learned the eastern ways of mysticism, stealth, and deadly arts. Now that he’s back, Matthias is hell bent on earning the absolute trust of his mistress. All the better to elevate himself from slave to heir…

Dark Archive

Darksmokepuncher,

That is a good beginning. You should check out the characters in my other active games (NF's Midnight and NF's Land of Ice and Blood) and take a look at their backstories for further inspiration.

Pathfinder Pathfinder Accessories, PF Special Edition Subscriber; Pathfinder Roleplaying Game Superscriber

Hmm...sounds interesting. To you have a cutoff date set? Always helps me if I know when I have to have things done by.

Rolls:
4d6 ⇒ (4, 1, 2, 3) = 10
4d6 ⇒ (1, 2, 5, 4) = 12
4d6 ⇒ (3, 6, 4, 4) = 17
4d6 ⇒ (6, 5, 2, 2) = 15
4d6 ⇒ (1, 5, 1, 3) = 10
4d6 ⇒ (6, 5, 2, 3) = 16

Lantern Lodge

Here goes my rough idea for the Aasimar Cleric, Ozaziel.

Oz remembers nothing of the time before. He awoke one day on the edge of the forest outside the city, fully armed and armored. He tries to remember the times before but everything is fuzzy. He assumes he was religious by the holy symbol of the Empyreal Lord, Ragathiel hanging around his neck. His skill with the bastard sword has earned him at least some recognition around the city and has at least earned him some coin with the town guard.

The basic idea of this guy is that he is a fallen angel who has been battling the demonic forces in heaven for Ragathiel. He was wounded in battle and fell. He kept falling until he hit the earth. The spot where he landed has an outline of a large winged being. He is just the rememnants of the being that was. Dwarfed in size and power, for now.

This is the rough background for an Aasimar Separatist (representing his subsequent fall from the heavens) Cleric of Ragathiel. Crunch to come soon (hopefully tomorrow).

Sovereign Court

Ironic, I'm playing a samsaran witch in my current IRL jade regent... otherwise, I would submit that character...

Raeveric Seris was born among the all-too-common Tiefling population of the gruesome and inhospitable streets of Riddleport, and quickly learned his trade. His first contracts paid in flesh as a teenager frequenting the vengeance-oriented and often-scorned priestesses of Calistria. Taking inspiration from the northerners' tales of the invisible killer, Rae pledged himself wholeheartedly to the path of shadows.
Both charming and devious, Rae quickly learned the arts of centering himself and his energy, and spent many months traveling the globe as a mercenary for the Pathfinder Society. Ultimately, the world proved too boring for his raunchy and often bloodied tastes, and he set forth to return home to riddleport, hoping to sign into the employ of a crimelord as devious and cunning as he.
This was not to be. Stopping in Korvosa, a fateful ambush ended badly for a group of local ruffians. As the last thug lay quivering in a growing pool of crimson, the guards arrived. Far from arresting the newcomer, the Korvosan guard instead congratulated him in "apprehending" the criminals, and pointed him in the direction of Sable Company... for a hefty finder's fee, of course.
This is, after all, Varisia- the land of the inscrutable.

Let me know what you think! Love to be a part of your rather visionary and unique campaign.

Presenting Rutan Chidu Suji, Samsaran Witch and Sable Company member.

background:
Rutan Chidu Suji was definitely a wandering soul.

While most Samsaran are born in the Dragon Empires, Rutan first opened his eyes in Faldamont, a small settlement in the foothills of the World's Edge mountains, in Taldor. Clearly the pale child was different from his neighbors, but none understood the truth until he was old enough to start to remember...
---
Chidu Suji Rehu was a wonder to behold for the people of her tribe. Born deep in the Mwangi jungle, they had never seen anyone so pale. The shaman said she was the harbinger of a new age for the tribe, and she was groomed to take over as their leader. When she reached adulthood, the old Chieftain stepped down, and Chidu was left in charge. Unfortunately, this meant she was in charge when the Bekyar slavers arrived, desperate to take as many slaves as possible to sell to their new clients, Chelish slave traders. When she tried to use her magic to defend her people, the slavers made an example of her, torturing her while they took her people away in chains. When they finished with their fun, the Bekyar war chief slit her throat.
---
Rutan was always strange - he was obviously a child, and behaved as such, but his stories were so vivid and graphic, and he absorbed knowledge more like he was remembering it than like it was new.

When Rutan was eight, a party of travelers came through Faldamont, and Rutan's life was changed forever. There was a Wizard traveling with them, and he noticed the boy watching them as they settled in at the tavern. That evening, the Wizard asked the boy what he remembered.

He remembered Chidu Suji Rehu, the chieftain.

He remembered Suji Rehu Keji, the hedge witch who traveled the Fernwall mountains, caring for her Varisian neighbors.

He remembered many others, faintly. Lives all over Golarion...

The Wizard asked Rutan to bring his parents to see him.
---
When the Wizard and his retinue left Faldamont in the morning, Rutan was with them; the Wizard wished to study the Samsaran child, and brought him back to Cassomir. The two spent months learning from each other; Rutan would tell Halaron about his past lives, while the Wizard took notes. It seemed that one common thread throughout his lives was a talent for magic; Halaron started training the boy and exploring the limits of his powers.

After spending five years with the Wizard, Halaron told Rutan that his magic was developing in a way he was unfamiliar with, and for Rutan's own safety, Halaron journeyed with him to Korvosa. There, Halaron delivered Rutan into the care of a contact of his who was a witch serving King Eodred.

With tutoring from a proper witch, Rutan's magical abilities quickly blossomed. Eventually, his mentor presented him with an egg, which Rutan was to keep warm, and watch over carefully. After two months, the egg hatched, and Rutan met his familiar for the first time. Yuki was a beast Rutan remembered from his previous life...a rhamphorhynchus, a tiny pterosaur from the expanse.

When the young witch was old enough, Larissa got him a job as a squire in the Korvosan Guard. He worked diligently, and quickly rose through the ranks, by virtue of applying brains more often than brawn. His superiors noticed his abilities, and Rutan was eventually asked to join the Sable Company, and placed on a team that handled unusual assignments, when the King needed things done quietly.

Timeline:

The recruitment lasts till Monday. If I do get enough interesting proposals, we will proceed with character creation, and that will last two weeks. After that, the game starts.

If I do not get enough applications by Monday, I will start another recruitment thread similar to this one, but set in Golarion, most likely.

Is there anything you want me to change in the backstory before I start working on crunch?

You would need to expand it a little. Take a look at PCs in my other games to see what I expect from a personal history of a character.

Nightflier...let me know if there's anything in Rutan's background that won't work for you.

Thanks!

Won't have the new KQ until this weekend, but I'm intrigued by the Elven Archer.

I like your background. It is detailed enough and well thought out.

Excellent, thanks. It was my first attempt at a Samsaran adventurer.

Sczarni

I am expanding the backstory significantly after seeing some of your other characters. I hope to have it posted by tonight. Thank you for the feed back.

Sczarni

Matthias Dren - extended backstory.:

Dibella Krune opened her back door in the rain well past midnight. What is that crying? she thought.

Looking down, a naked creature lay squalling on her stoop. Its skin was smoke and crimson. Its eyes were black as coal. Its pointed tail flicked to and fro, and ever it tugged at its tiny horns. This creature, a devil-spawn from unholy carnal relations, was beautiful.

Dibella bent at the waist and gathered the crying tiefling in her own shawl and went inside.
~~
“Mistress?”

“Ah, Matthias! Thank you for coming so quickly.”

Mistress Krune sat up straight and folded her hands across her lap. Here it comes, thought Matthias.

“Ser Chronos, the Hellknight, do you know him?”

Dren nodded.

“His blasted dog barks at all hours. Be a good lad and deal with it.”

Matthias’ eyes narrowed. “I thought I was forbidden from killing since the troubadour girl?”

The mistress simply stared. Matthias straightened, nodded, and excused himself.

~~

“Mistress, I’ve been invited to train with the Black Adders in Tien Ja. This training will greatly enhance my ability to serve you. I humbly ask your blessing.”

“Begone slave. Your place is here.”

~~

“Damnit Dren! I told you not to leave the house!”

“I thought the racquet would bother you?” Matthias shrugged his massive shoulders as he wiped the gore from his blade. 3 minstrels lie gutted and dead at his feet in the yard.

The mistress smiled. “You are a thoughtful child Matthias, but you know how I feel about bodies in my court. Get rid of them.”

~~

“Dren! Here! Now!”

What is it now?

Dibella handed Matthias a crumpled parchment.

Why is she so upset? He started to read.

By order of Queen Abrogail of the Thrice-Damned House of Thrune, the tiefling known as Matthias Dren is summoned to court to answer for his crimes against Cheliax. If he is found guilty, he will be exiled to the Nine Hells.

Executed by Knight Commander Rennik Chronos

“What will we do mistress?”

“You will run. Run to Tien Ja and learn all you can. But hear me now Matthias Dren: You come back to me. Come back when you’re strong enough and we will bring Cheliax to its knees!”

Matthias left that very moment and no soul in Cheliax has seen him since.

Please tell me what else I can add. I still don't feel like it's quite finished...

I'll probably be able to fill it out more once I have my heroic path and some of the crunch in place. Again, thanks for the consideration!

Dark Archive

Just to remind you that the recruitment ends in two days. If I do not get enough applications and for all characters, I'm afraid that the game will not start.

On the other hand, you can also apply for my Absalom game, since it will be using same character creation rules.

Sczarni

If this one doesnt get off the ground, will you consider me for the Absalom game?

Looks like we've only got applications for half the positions, unfortunately. Hope we get some sudden interest this weekend, this seems like a really fun idea.

This looks interesting. I prefer homebrewed adventures, they tend to allow for more exotic races and classes.

Is it possible to post more setting background, so I can develop some background for a character. I only have the Pathfinder Core Rulebook, Advance Player's Guide, Ultimate Magic and Ultimate Combat for character creation. Thus my Glorion knowledge is very limited. You can see my aliases for the kind of backgrounds I create for the characters.

Rolls
4d6 ⇒ (4, 2, 2, 6) = 14 12
4d6 ⇒ (1, 2, 6, 1) = 10 9
4d6 ⇒ (3, 2, 2, 6) = 13 11
4d6 ⇒ (6, 5, 2, 3) = 16 14
4d6 ⇒ (3, 6, 4, 1) = 14 13
4d6 ⇒ (6, 4, 3, 1) = 14 13

Rolled points is: 13 (Way lower than 30)

Will use 30 point system.

I will go for something that has not been taken already by someone. This time something more martial.

I take the Drow two-weapon soulknife (though I see it mentions Dreamscarred Press, is this information available online). If I need to purchase the printed book it will take about 2 months or more to arrives.

Soulknife is a psionic class, never plade a psionics class, so this will be interesting.

What alignments would you allow for the drow two-weapon soulknife?

There is very little freely available information on the drow in Golarion. I found a small piece on Golariopedia. Any helpful extra information I can get to help me create a character. Drow being exceptionally rare on the surface world, it is going to need some creative thinking on how the character ended up in the mercenary Korvossa's Sable Company, to be sent off to another world.

If I get selected I will purchase the psionics PDF and use it while I await for the book. I will build the character once I have the psionics PDF so I can by the abilities correctly to suit psionics.

I see there is a noble option for the drow, is this option allowed.

Any additional information on the Korvossa's Sable Company.

Dark Archive

To be honest, right now it seems that I will not have enough people for this game, and not all roles will be filled. Therefore, I urge all of you who applied for this game to also apply for my Absalom game, since it's gonna be similar to this one. Also, I plan to develop the cities of Golarion in a manner more appropriate for my home brewed world, so that I can import them when I feel satisfied with them.

Thanx for the information on soulknife, now I have more an idea what kind of character the drow would be.

Also a better location of drow information on the Golariopedia.

I see what nightflier has to say about the drow noble.

Edit:
I see your request to move to another game. It is sad. No interest, then again I noticed people have little interest in homebrew games.

Would you still like to see the drow soulknife being developed?

I just looked at the other game, seems there are plenty characters in the other game already. Maybe see if you can get some to come this way.

Dark Archive

In that game, you can apply with whatever you like. You can also apply with multiple characters. I have posted some info on Soulknives there and one other player applied with a Soulknife Drow as well. You can work with him, if you wish, so that you do your backgrounds together - perhaps your characters can be brothers or whatever; you could also be friends, rivals, students at the same Soulknife school, escaped criminals of the Drow society...

Whatever you decide, roll again on that thread and remember that you can play whatever you wish there. If you still wish to play the Drow, roll 1d20. If you get 1, you are Noble.

Oki will do.

Though remember I will always be available for an opportunity to play home brew games. I like to give authors of homebrew settings to play test their creations.

I'm in for the Nagaji sorceror (bloodline arcane).
30 pt buy as my second stats in other thread were poor.

stats and plans:

ST=14
DX=14
IN=10
CH=22
CO=12
WI=10
Traits Divine Weapon 2H sword (CHA vs STR)
Traits Charismatic (+2 CHA, -2 WI)
Plan on having some reptile pets
Spells Known
Enlarge Person
Mage Armor
Plan on having this sorceror buff and mix it up himself with his two handed sword while enlarged and mage armored.

Oddly enough, while I was looking forward to this game a lot more than the one in Absalom (which is also cool sounding, but this just sounds more awesome), I will stick with the Goblin I've submitted for the other one, I don't really want to play this witch except where he was a required character here.
