Silver Crusade

... saw my DM's PC roll a natural 1 on a Coup de Grace, with an admixture bomb dealing 6d6+20.

Silver Crusade

Villain escaped by using Wall of Iron to seal a doorway. Group gave up on pursuit. I used my bonded item to cast shrink and remove the wall. Took a little calculation to make sure that would work though as wall of iron is expressed in area with a fixed thickness and shrink affects a volume.


Rolled a natural 20 against a raging Orc barbarian that had my Half-Orc Inquisitor down to 2 hit points. I pulled a crit card... DECAPITATION!

this happened last week but I thought I'd share.

Man, it's been months since my last game, I don't remember anything exceptional from it. :(

Edit: I take that back. My dwarf monk moved in to pull the fallen noble out of the monster's reach, provoking an AoO. The DM rolled and asked for my AC. Thanks to popping a ki point and having Mobility, I casually stated '27'. Gasps around the table followed my dwarf rescuing the would-be victim.


Today I watched a Kobold Cavalier play LANCECHARGE pinball between a bunch of Mites, while on his wolf. Much lulzing to be had.


Killed a cyclops-lich (Well, more facilitated the party's paladin in killing the cyclops-lich by hasting him and getting the heck out of the way), before retiring home with my newly-gotten eyeball to dissect and study.


scored a chase scene at level 4 with around 5 acrobatics checks scoring 30 above.


During 3.5 my level 8 wizard single handedly killed a Nightwing being ridden by a wilder of unknown level. Killed the wilder by hurling the body of a fellow party member at her utilizing a defenestrating sphere.

When all was said and done the only ones left standing was myself and the Cleric Lich of "yeah I could like smash you like a bug or something". So I gave him the finger, stuffed my dead party members in a bag and teleported back to my house in time for tea.

Coup de graces with ranged weapons (which still have to happen in melee range) either miss or autocrit, with a +5 to the roll, IIRC.


Was used as a thrown weapon by the party fighter in order to attack a manticore, then tried to jump on it to knock it down, only to have it land on top of me when it finally died from a barrage of arrows.


also during a past campaign, my kleptomaniac CN tengu rogue who liked shiny things (The original Squawk Featherbeak) was killed by our resident tiefling ranger when i was absent.

during the last campaign, my tengu stole everyone's amulets of protection from undead cause they were silver and shiny. I was knocked out by our dwarf barbarian.

I was decapitated the next day, and someone cast light on my beak to use me as a lantern.

Our party of three 13th level PCs (a feral kobold battle sorcerer, a catfolk archer ranger, and my chaos gnome brass dragon shaman) took care of a CR 23 deathknight fighter, a CR 21 deathknight fighter/warlock, a bunch of invisible skeletal champions, and some other undead.

The battle sorcerer made great use of his new wall of magma spell, and I used my ring of the ram and bracers of repulsion to push NPCs into the (INVISIBLE) walls of magma.

Er, no, you recall incorrectly.

Coup de Grace:
As a full-round action, you can use a melee weapon to deliver a coup de grace (pronounced “coo day grahs”) to a helpless opponent. You can also use a bow or crossbow, provided you are adjacent to the target.

You automatically hit and score a critical hit. If the defender survives the damage, he must make a Fortitude save (DC 10 + damage dealt) or die. A rogue also gets her extra sneak attack damage against a helpless opponent when delivering a coup de grace.

You never roll to hit with a coup de grace.

A bit because I forgot about this while being the rules lawyer (we didn't have to use coup de grace a lot during the campaign since we have no spellcaster), and another bit because the alchemist tried to stuff the bomb inside the poor evil guy's mouth and the DM decided it was worth a roll, "just in case". Rolled in front of everyone, natural 1.

Also, I (but a longer time ago) :

... suffered a critical hit with my DMPC, when we were playing in 3.5. Zombie minotaur, maximimized power attack on large greataxe. I suffered something like 67 damage on a character with max 48 HP, who wasn't currently at his maximum. My dwarf turned into a fine red mist and repainted the wall.

... saw the group's barbarian roll a natural 1 on his will save. It's a -2 after application of stats.

... failed to hit with a critical hit. The guy was under the blur spell, I rolled 20 on the attack, then 19 on the d100.


In the past I have used an attack of opportunity to snag a potion from the hand of the cleric about to drink it. On my turn, I backed away and drank it myself--free healing!

I have also used my arcane bond to use feather fall on a thunderstone that was supposed to be an alarm. That particular alchemical item is still in my inventory.

I've also seen a coup de grace attack deal some incredible damage (to a held but not unconscious pc). If I recall correctly, the requisite fort save ended up being a DC 89. Of course, she rolls a natural 20.


Used my newly minted Witch to put down some PvP at level 1, seriously this was the first session, to keep the peace. A bolt was fired by one character, hit another and initiative was rolled. My back was turned, but on my turn I turn around used Slumber and the attacking character failed their save, they fall to the ground like a rock, I said "shall we continue on our way?", turned back around and walked back toward our original destination. I felt like a boss. B-)

In my first Shackled City campaign, the party got into a barroom brawl with the Stormblades. Just as the halfling rogue was about to escalate the violence, the party wizard arrived.

Taking one look at the scene, he webbed both parties and summoned the guards to arrest everyone.

My Dragon Disciple inadvertently genocided the drow. At level 5.


I got to say "Please make 21 reflex saves and a fort save." to a player once.


Not exactly recent, but I had a minotaur crit with his axe. He cut half-orc barbarian into his component halfs.

Fighting skeletons (we were all armed with swords, low level, and I'd forgotten to buy a cestus) I get a crit on a skeleton, roll max damage (20 points.)

And yes I did yell "There can be only one! Whack!"

As a DM, I had the party fighting fresh zombies, with bows rapiers and staves. They return fire (3.5 so no critting the dead)

Player "Natural 20, confirmed the crit! three sixes!" (player fudged a lot)

DM (Looks at the first 6, ticks off one point of damage). A Beautiful Shot! Your arrow flies straight and true, sinking deep into the elf's chest. He dully looks down, looks back up and shoots another arrow.

PArty: Begins to panic.

Best part? The BBEG had left a long sword, with a pink bow, tied to the tree behind the zombies.

Our DM makes each fumble a risk to hit yourself or an ally. Because of this, I saw a BBEG kill himself when he hit himself with his sword. Roleplay-wise, it was shown as him hitting a fragile stone pillar with his sword and being crushed to death after his rant about how it would be impossible to defeat him, just before a dramatic "Nooooo".

I also saw our barbarian put an ally KO, just by himself, by rolling 4 consecutives natural 1s on power attacks then rolling well to hit the flat-footed AC of the ally, who rolled low on each perception check despite cumulative bonuses.

This happened a couple of sessions ago.

As the GM I had BBEG use antigravity in area of dwarf tank to hurl him 100' upwards into ceiling, so that he could deal with rest of party. Dwarf then proceded to jump out of AG area and try to dive bomb BBEG. Dwarf rolled Nat 1 on touch attack glacing off BBEG slamming into floor. Rolled for random scatter to see which direction dwarf ended up and dwarf ended up back in AG field and shot back to ceiling.

Much finger pointing and laughing had by all.


Rolled a total of 8 on my initiative.


Destroyed a CR 8 Troll with one Full-Attack from my level 6 ranger, solo.

watch the ninja attempt to solo a BBEG while doing recon, then watch the bard do the same after the ninja died, then the tank go in after the bard died, then the blaster went in after all the rest were dead

... wrote 29 pages of an adventure path I plan to run for my party.

Oh, and this:

I'm playing a druid. The party comes up against a necromancer completing some evil ritual and initiative is rolled. My first action? Sleet storm him. He summons a massive undead creature... who barely makes it out of the sleet storm to get to us. The necromancer trudges around in the snow for the full 6 rounds, and just before he makes it out, I cast Call Lightning and get another turn. Ready an action-- when I see an enemy cast a spell, call lightning.

He pops out, readies a ray, and boop. Call lightning, a 3 on Reflex, 10 damage. DC 24 check. Rolls a 3. Spell lost.

The wizard frowns, backs up, tries again... but I readied again. Call lightning interrupts, a 3 on reflex, 14 damage. DC 27 check. Rolls a 3. Spell lost.

And then the oracle walked forward and made him make a Fort save-- DC 15. 3. Failure. Now he's blind.

And then our goblin magus crit him to death. Nothing says "I do what I want, char op be damned" like 2d4 rapier damage punctuated with 11d6 shocking and 1d6 flaming.


I was playing Top Secret/S.I., we had been captured by the Villain Kurtz (we were using the module entitled The Final Weapon) and held at his wonderfully lavish manson in Hawaii. As dinner neared, Kurtz informed his very large mute asian bodyguard (who carried a very big sword) to retreive the characters and bring them down to dine with him.

My character, Tashiana Mao Ling, was an ORION agent that had refused to use firearms when I created her. Instead of being a standard agent, she embraced her asian heritiage and was very much a sort of modern day ninja.

As Kurtz's bodyguard (Tapu I believe his name was) came to Tashiana's chamber to retreive her for dinner, she eyed his large sword he brandished at his side. True to her nature, a risk taker and a woman of action, she suddenly made a grab for his sheathed weapon. With the sword in hand, all in the same action, she thrust the sword into his stomach, received a monumental critical hit and killed him. The body guard lay dead at her feet, his blood seeping into the carpet she stood on.

This attack required her to take two actions within the same turn. As per rules of the game, selecting 2 actions requires the character to attempt both at 1/2 ability. Thus grabbing the weapon would be at 1/2 ability plus making the attack would be at 1/2 ability. The Administrator determined that grabbing the sword out of his scabbard was more difficult and that roll was reduced to 1/4 ability (or about 17%. The attack would remain at 1/2 ability or about 34% chance of success.

The critical hit system was designed by the Administrator. If the attack succeeded, a critical hit became possible if the spread between the die roll and the attack chance was great enough. The greater the spread, the better the critical hit scored.

Needless to say, this caught the attention of the villain.

A while back, we were playing d20 Modern in a military campaign. My guy was a Fast Hero/Gunslinger type, the other guy was a Strong Hero/Soldier type. Well, we found a bomb and had to disarm it, and neither of us had Disable Device or Demolitions, so we called HQ, and they walked us through it. They told us to cut the blue wire after cutting the red wire.

We heard wrong, and attempted to cut the blue wire first.

And rolled a natural 1.

So we cut the other wire by mistake....which means we accidentally cut the red wire first, so we actually succeeded.

Never has incompetence been rewarded so well!


...watched the party Rogue walk up to a gem-encrusted iron door in the secret lair of a highly paranoid and evil group of people, and NOT check for traps before trying to disable the lock

...and then escape entirely unscathed thanks to improved evasion, while the three allies nearest him suffered 12d10 points of slam damage from the spring loaded trapped [and false] door.


I once had a Barbarian that was attacked by two sharks. After they played Tug-Of-War with him, one of them managed to swallow him and swim away, full speed. I had no light weapon to cut my way out. My grapple check was nothing compared to the shark's. My party had no way of finding me, let alone getting me out of this fiendish shark's (did I mention it was fiendish? Well it was) stomach.

The best part?

I SURVIVED.


Oh, and this was a short while before (or was it a short while after?) my character was held in prison for starting a war between two countries. While in prison, my teammates tried to bust me out- except there were two guards with swords at my neck (as I sat there tied up) who CdG'ed me as soon as my allies came into view. I survived that, too.
