It's the end of an era. And it makes me wonder what's on Bill Gates mind.
I'm truly saddened to learn of Steve Jobs' death. Melinda and I extend our sincere condolences to his family and friends, and to everyone Steve has touched through his work.
Steve and I first met nearly 30 years ago, and have been colleagues, competitors and friends over the course of more than half our lives.
The world rarely sees someone who has had the profound impact Steve has had, the effects of which will be felt for many generations to come.
For those of us lucky enough to get to work with him, it's been an insanely great honor. I will miss Steve immensely.

I read this sad news from the Internet on the touchscreen of my cellphone.
I found the story using a graphical user interface, on an operating system that employs an object-oriented paradigm.
Although Jobs did not invent any of those things, he certainly brought them all to the market effectively. Most importantly, he did it in a way that made people want to use technology rather than be intimidated by it.
I am an IT student studying usability. It would be hard to think of a single person who represented the user better than he.

You know, as a huge Apple fan and pretty die hard Mac user, I figured this news when it eventually came would hit me hard ...
But I was actually suprised at just how sad it made me. I've always been in awe of Jobs and with his death, it feels like the world will be a little less ... I don't know ...
Sigh ...
Anyway, rest in peace, Steve, you magnificent genius bastard.

Agreed. He is one of the few men who could truly say he changed the way the world worked. I cut my computing teeth on the Apple Macintosh, and I still prefer Apple to other computers. Rest in peace, Mr. Jobs.

Earlier in the thread someone mentioned cutting teeth on apple II. I almost forgot about that. There was an apple II in the classroom that we could use way back. I thought it was great and would rush through work to get to it. I thought about replying to this thread this morning as I was listening to my IPod. RIP Mr. Jobs.
