It's raining masks!

Rise of the Runelords

Our group is currently running RotRL, and we are now in the Hook Mountain Massacre part. After The Skinsaw Murders, we ended up with a bunch of Skinsaw Masks. A dozen or so regular ones, plus two special ones (I won't mention where they are from so as not to give out any spoiler, everybody who played trough there know what I'm talking about anyways).

In any case, after trying on the masks we have no plan to do so again, and we figured that they are magical item, so they should bring back a hefty sum if liquidated. Thing is, I tried to simply mention I was trying to sell them, and the DM mentionned that it would be harder than that, since while they are indeed magical, they are still quite gruesome items, with an evil aura to boot, and aren't exactly fun to wear for same people. I can hardly argue with those points, but still, the money seems like something we can hardly pass up.

Any idea to get those things sold for a decent price (I did mention taking a trip to Absalom, but that idea did'nt seem to have such a great reception, especially from the DM).

I'd think you could find a market for it in Kaer Maga, but it could just be that your GM doesn't want to derail his campaign for a special trip with no greater purpose than to sell stuff.

My players took the masks to the temple of Iomedae to be disposed of.
No direct reward then but when they came back from the hook mountains with a deceased character they got him raised and greater restorated(twice) for free.
And no, they did not go there underequipped, they got adequate WBL from Grobaras's reward. The character death was caused by an unfortunate critical hit from an ogre hook.

FWIW, I agree with your GM and that's probably how I would run it (if I were running RotRL). The masks aren't happy items, they have a certain amount of ...baggage... associated with them.

Again FWIW if I were running RotRL, I'd OOC questions the motivations of a good-aligned character that just wanted to sell the masks for a quick buck. I much prefer, and would be willing to grant boons of some sort for, good-aligned characters who took it upon themselves to dispose of evil items rather than see them fall into the wrong hands in the future.

The masks are not something that good characters would want to sell; there's too much of a chance that they will corrupt the buyer (or be used for nefarious purposes). If they sell them anyway, then they could be used by some villain to help perform some vile deed.

On the other hand, the PCs' recommended WBL is based on selling and/or using items found. A compromise that I use is similar to what nidho posted: A good church that the PCs are allied with pays a "finder's fee" (usually one half market price; sometimes less, but then PCs will get discounts on spellcasting and purchase of holy water, potions, scrolls, wands, and other items) for turning over evil magic items for disposal.

Don't forget the social issues, these masks were made from the skin of the people the Skinsaw cult killed. Keeping them could lead to accusations of murder against the players, after all they have the evidence in their possession.

We did exactly the same; receiving a half their value in trade for temple-commissioned magic items.

In my game, the church(es) of the region have a bounty on evil items. They pay regular price and dispose of them. The local governments have a similar deal with giant-sized weapons and such.

Denying a party wealth because they can't liquidate assets will screw the power curve in an adventure already known as being stingy with magic items.

I handled it by allowing players to drain the items of magic and create Ethillion. Very inefficiently, of course, but with item creation feats and house-ruled draining feats, they could recover a lot. Even at its most inefficient the players were happy, because they felt they had done a good deed and even gotten a small reward.
If I'd run the game again, I'd give my players rumors that such methods exist and force them to find instructions before they get to drain items again, but hindsight is always better.

That's pretty much what I'm doing in my campaign. So far, the party has only really used it to sell the Lamashtan prayer book from the Catacombs, but they know it's an option. If I'm not mistaken, James made this suggestion somewhere on the boards, as well.

Basically, the church is paying them to get these things off the street. They will probably end up destroyed, but maybe an interesting side quest might be having one of the younger priests get curious about something he shouldn't, and gets possessed or corrupted or something. The church could send the party to save/stop/fix him.

Same here. I also let it be assumed that the temples will use them as sacrificial materials or crafting components. "Teach the weapon how to smash Evil", "And for the lives that have been saved by the capture of this dark force you may come back to us", etc.

It stayed with me when I learned some actual history of religions fighthing one another and some brought back bells and re-smelted them to fit in their churches.
