Shield Feats

Homebrew and House Rules

Shields need some love in my 3.5 game, so I made-up a few feats and want to know what people think. But first, a few things to keep in mind:

  • These feats are for 3.5 (I use core + homebrew only)

  • I borrowed Shield Focus from PF (+1 AC), but only allow it to apply to light or heavier shields.

  • Since you get fewer feats in 3.5, its OK if they are a little strong.

Feats:

Shield Momentum [Combat]
You use your shield to build damaging momentum in your weapon
Prerequisites: Str13, Shield Focus, Bab+3
Benefit: When making attacks with a one-handed weapon while wearing a light or heavy shield in your offhand, you may add your shield bonus to your main-hand weapon damage rolls.

Shield Master [Combat]
You have mastered the defensive use of shields.
Prerequisites: Shield Focus, Bab+3
Benefit: Your shield bonus also applies to your touch AC.

Guardian Shield [Combat]
You use your shield to protect an ally.
Prerequisites: Shield Focus, Bab+1
Benefit: You may choose to give-up your shield bonus as a move action, and grant that bonus to an adjacent ally for 1 round.

Shielded Assault [Combat]
You make a powerful attack with your shield and your weapon.
Prerequisites: Improved Shield Bash, Shield Focus, Bab+6
Benefit: When making a successful shield bash attack as a standard action or during a charge with your primary hand, you may immediately make a second attack against the same target with your off-hand weapon, albeit at a -5 penalty.

Any similarity to any published feats is coincidental, these were all written without reference beyond the core rules.

I would like to know if these are balanced enough for 3.5, and if they work properly, make sense and are worth taking. Hopefully there aren't any unforeseen complications.

Shielded Assault - I'd allow the weapon attack to be made IF the shield bash hits only. With the weapon being an off-hand attack the -5 penalty seems a bit steep. I'd just make the weapon attack at full BAB, but just with a -5 penalty (and not counting as an off-hand attack), it is not a feat that will see use every round.

Otherwise I do not see a problem with any of the feats.

Here is one I use in my games.

Tower Shield Master [Combat]
You are more accurate with your attack in combat.

Prerequisites: Fighter 3
Benefit: You no longer suffer the -2 penalty to attacks while using a tower shield.

That feat was just whipped-up today, didn't think all the way through I guess. It would probably be OK to just let you get that second attack as normal for an iterive, as you said.

Guardian Shield [Combat]
Check the Divine Defender pal alternate class in the APG. It has something similar to this that requires uses of lay on hands or channel energy I think.

Shielded Assault [Combat]
Does the -5 stack with the penelty for wielding it off-handed?

In my campaign, I allow players using a light weapon with a tower shield to attack with no penalty. To simulate the Roman gladius (short sword) and tower shield fighting.

Mmmm I like that. Consider it stolen.
