And We all know how important word count is to writers and teachers don't we. Yes, yes we do.
It was a dark and stormy night, after all. :-)

Construction Worker Finds 600-Year-Old Sword in Bog
This is in the same corner of the country that my grandparents came from. That makes me oddly happy.
(Also it's just plain cool.)

You've been channelling the end of 'Conan' again and hurling it at an eebil wizard.
You missed.

Polish. Grandma's parents lived in Tarnow. Grandpa was from the northeastern part of Malopolska, in the area that went through "Russification", so when he turned 14 in 1908, his mother sold what she had to buy him ship passage to Canada so he wouldn't end up conscripted into the Russian Army.

Ah yes, Wisconsin weather! We start out with rain showers in the morning followed by a sudden spike in temperature to the upper 80s by late afternoon with a fun filled evening of thunderstorms and possibly a couple dozen tornadoes.
You forgot the clouds of mosquitoes at dusk.

1908?
Or was your grandpa's story behind traveling to America merely a convenient cover hiding his true origins?

That is awesome.
And it would explain soooo much.

Weird. We normally lag behind you on weather since it's usually moving west to east, but today we had that exact same weather, pretty close to the same timing. Apparently it's very, very speedy weather....hopefully we'll miss out on the tornadoes though. :)

So brief pet peeve that I will manage NOT to turn into a long tirade (without encouragement):
Why is it that news reports always have to call people who go out into the wilderness and die because they did something stupid "experienced outdoorsmen"?
Y'know, I've been backpacking for 43 years, met and hiked with hundreds of people, and not a one of them would have done some of the stupid "stuff" these "experienced outdoorsmen" did to get themselves killed.
I guess I'm just not experienced.

I'm pretty good about keeping standing water to a minimum in our neighborhood so there aren't as many as you might expect. :-)

So the information packets (which I *gasp* read) said, "Carry 1 liter of water per person per kilometer." Think about that. 2 kg of water per km, so 12 kg of water for the two of us for a brief 6 km hike. I decided they were insane, so I loaded up on 4 liters of water and we set off.
Sure enough, we ran out of water about 2 km in. It was insane how fast you lost water in that heat and humidity. And, being in the wilderness and out of water, we headed back, taking it easy so as not to unduly exert ourselves! What a concept!
So yeah, we made it back fine, but each had another liter once we hit civilization.
So, just related to the above non-tirade...
