That was an amazing summer, I learned so much about girls.

Some other stuff, too, but that's what he'll appreciate the most.
Wish him Happy Birthday from me... and where in Texas did you get haggis-flavored chips?

There's a fantastic British goods shop out towards the airport. It's been there so long, it's actually in the guidance map in my Honda.

WTF???

Ebola outbreak was the closest thing we had to this before and its still thr best thing we can compare it to.
Um.... Spanish Flu? 1918 Pandemic? The one that had a disease that spreads in nearly the exact same manner and has relatively similar effects and lethality rates? The one that we are nearly exactly mimicking every social misstep in the exact same order as? Hello?

We were not alive for that. That I know of.

I'm preeeetty sure there's plenty of records left from then that don't require any direct personal experience to make the comparison.

But there's no point in regards to HIPAA.

They're still going to make the comparison. When I first did HIPAA, I think Sars was the thing they were all talking about.

Hey man, I don't work for the government, I just take training when it comes to protection of health information. No many peoole had personal portable health information in 1918. Social security cards didn't start until the 1930s.

Rib Mountain, actually.

Though, it's definitely not a mountain.

But the nice thing about 4-H is it is filled with milkmaids, and 4-H camp is co-ed (not the cabins mind you but the camp itself).

It really is tragic we didn't grow up together we would have been an awesome duo.

My life up until my teenaged years was miserable.

However, when I was 15 (1991) grunge became popular (thus my super poor clothing became trendy), I'd finally gotten my hair to where it was considered long) and I moved to a new town 180 miles away so I had an air of mystery.

So needless to say I had a blast in high school

It's really funny how going through old stuff can bring back such a strong sense of bitterness.

My father (who died in 2007, so it's been a while) was infamous for throwing things out. He absolutely refused to sort anything, saying, "If I accidentally throw something I need away, I'll just buy a new one."
Yeah, American consumerism at its pinnacle.

If we left a game on the table overnight because we hadn't finished playing and we were planning on finishing in the morning, he'd throw it out and we'd have to go through the trash to rescue all the pieces. On many occasions my mother would get home from a shopping trip, put something down on the counter while she was trying to put other things away, and he'd throw it out. It was a massive source of family friction.

So now I'm going through boxes and boxes of HIS old stuff. Dozens (each) of light bulbs, flashlights, sockets, extension cords, batteries... if he cared about it, he'd buy it, and never throw it away. The sheer amount of redundant crap is incredible.

Yes, I keep half a dozen spare light bulbs in the house so I don't have to go to the store when one burns out. But 28? And 16 spare flashlight bulbs? And over 40 extra outlets?

Apparently throwing things out was what he did to other people's stuff, not his own.

And yep, he's been dead for over 13 years now, but I'm pissed off at him all over again this morning...

On the brighter side, this morning we kicked off what should be the final refi of our lifetimes. Our total debt is well below the conforming loan cap for the Bay Area, interest rates are down to 3%, so we can just put everything we owe everyone into one big fat 3%, 30 year fixed mortgage and forget about it.

It'll take a couple of months, but it'll be a really, really nice feeling to have *one* bill to pay every month, and to have it be at a ridiculously-low interest rate.

EDIT: I know, I know. Some of you are going to ask, "Aren't you planning on retiring to Scotland?"
Yes, yes we are. But the difference in home prices between Albany and Edinburgh means that if I get my savings up to rent a place in Edinburgh for a year while the house in Albany sells, I'll be able to use the cash from the Albany sale to pay off the mortgage and buy the Edinburgh house straight up, no loans involved.

At least that's the current plan...

So, WW asked for a pirate-themed drive-by party, he put up a FB event invite, I made two dozen dark and stormy cupcakes in ziploc baggies, and in the last hour and a half, our only visitors have been his mom, and two old college friends of mine who live clear out on thd other side of the Metroplex.
It's kind of dismal, and I feel awful for him.
He already thinks that he has no friends here anymore.

A lot of it is circumstantial; of his few good friends from younger days who still live hereabouts, one is away in Oklahoma because their dad just died, and one is in the hospital because neck vertebrae surgery a few days ago resulted in a bad case of pneumonia.

But... geez.

Not to anger the Freehold, but...
...oh, who am I kidding? It's fun to anger the Freehold!

I'm not a fan of parking meters. I strongly prefer Albany's citywide free parking with clearly posted time limits. As does our Chamber of Commerce, which quickly shuts down any attempt to erect parking meters in Albany.

But Berkeley... Berkeley is a veritable forest of paid parking. It's a pleasant surprise to find yourself within five blocks of a store without having to pay for parking.

And there really is nothing so viscerally satisfying as to park right at the parking machine, pay for your 15 minutes of parking, drop your package off, come back to the car, and find every other car on the block ticketed, and yours spared.

I always have pity for people half a block away from the machine. Especially for people with mobility issues, that can be a nightmare. But parked right in front of me (so literally their back bumper was at the machine) was a nearly new BMW with tinted windows that had arrived after us (and we were only there 10 minutes) and was already ticketed. Ditto the shiny black SUV behind us.

It just tickled me. There's the parking machine right there. You can't get out of your car at that point and miss it. And they both obviously were just running off on 'short little errands' so they didn't need to feed the meter, and they both got nailed for it.

I have no idea about the rest of the cars; I don't pay that much attention when I park. I was just kind of impressed at the long line of tickets that appeared while I was dropping off a package.

(Yes. Lawful. I was dropping off a package yet I found a legal parking space and put in a few coins so that I was parked legally.)

My inlaws are still here. Hermione and WW's stepmom are painting with watercolors at the patio table and Val, WW and Grandpa are playing badminton. The day has turned out to be magically delightful.
It helps that the new medication Val is on has really leveled him out, so Grandpa is no longer treating him like he's a diseased squirrel.

I am confused by an instruction left for me at work. "Print audit report. Send to Sales." Now, by looking back at the notes for the previous two days, when I wasn't here, I can find an email address where it should be sent. But what report? There isn't one "audit report", but rather an entire menu choose from. And why do I have to email it to them? To do so, I would have to print the report(s), scan it/them, then email it/them to someone who will probably print it/them out again. Why do all this when they can simply login to our system from their office and print it that way? Or walk over, the office is next door. They could come over and get whatever they need. So, I've just written "Which report?" next to the note and will wait until someone says something to me. Which with my luck, a couple of days from now I'll get an angry text demanding to know why I haven't been sending the report(s).

Reminds me of when one of my old managers wanted me to do some of their job and export and send some reports to corporate that they are suppose to review I guess I should appreciate that they have that much faith that I did a better job then them with the reports. Of course, I've never liked familiars. In 3.5 they seemed like a way for the GM to screw you over by killing them. So the couple of wizards I've played in Pathfinder took the bonded item instead.

I don't mind pets. Once upon a time, I had a gnome with a rabbit and a duck as pets. But he didn't take them into combat, and if they died I really wouldn't have cared. But tying your character's abilities to an easy to kill critter is just a bad idea in my mind.
