...and as for streaming, the entire reason I started was to avoid having to pay for every damn channel I watched like I did with cable. But if I need Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime, Apple TV, HBO Go, and more, well...that's just cable all over again.

What I don't understand are people who get more than one streaming service. There's enough stuff to watch on YouTube alone to keep me busy for the entirety of my life, and probably even more on Netflix or Hulu, so why do you need more? Oh, because a show you like is on one and another show you like is on another? That's why I do a month of one, a month of the other, back to a month of one, etc.

The plot so far: The group got hired on as guards on a merchant caravan and decided they liked it so much they've traveled across northern Taldor and are headed into Galt.

- Encounter #1: A destroyed caravan where all the guards and merchants had been turned into zombies. A necromancer on the loose? No one was interested.

- Encounter #2: I rolled up, "Which of these tall tales is true?" on the random plot table, so the caravan hired on a guard who had a level of bard and told a lot of stories, plus had a journal of more. Then a band of orcs ambushed the caravan and killed him.

So they're heading to Edme in Galt and have heard rumors of Razor Jenny, but they're going to question the lone surviving orc and move on and I need something random for 1st-level PCs to do.

I can make it up on my own, but we're pretty dedicated to, "We don't know what's going to happen from week to week," so I figure FaWtL is about as random as it gets...

It kind of feels like they are not following any threads you throw at them. Am I misreading?

How is that fun to GM?

It's a blast! I don't have to come up with a plot. I just provide interesting NPCs, CR-appropriate encounters, and let them roam where they may. It's really rather refreshing.

And I think I'm going to go with Drejk's tax collector angle -- no plot to speak of, and easy to set up.

Re: Subscriptions:

While I could exist solely on YouTube and CrunchyRoll (with the occasional on-demand purchase from Amazon Prime), GothBard is quite addicted to a number of NetFlix shows (Patriot Act being a big one for her right now), and I have to admit, a lot of the NetFlix originals are really, really good. And now that the kids are on summer break both of them have asked for the NetFlix password, so I'm happy that it's seeing extensive use.

However, GothBard's now looking at subscribing to Disney+ just to get access to the Hamilton movie. And my feeling is, Disney's been getting more and more evil over the last couple of decades. Do you really want to support that?

But she points out that in my younger days I specifically cancelled cable because I wanted an a la carte menu of channels (I didn't want a penny of my money going to support professional sports, for example), so it's rather silly of me to complain now that they're offering it.

But much like VE, I have a finite amount of time so the idea of having a whole smorgasbord of channels daunts me. I can see Shiro, who lives alone and does little other than gaming and TV these days, needing multiple subscriptions.

For me, Amazon Prime is free, then NetFlix, YouTube, and CrunchyRoll seem like they should cover all the bases. We'll see how I feel once we have Disney+. I doubt I'll ever watch it.

(FTR, for music we have both a personal Pandora account for me (I like the eccentric random addition of songs and bands I've never heard), and a Spotify account for the family (GothBard and Impus Major swear by it). So we do seem to be a multi-account kind of household.)

I had an endoscopie today. So they shoved a camera down my throat to check my stomach. It was a horrible procedure.
Good news, they didnt find anything. Bad news, still dont know where my debilitating stomach pains come from.

The good thing about streaming services as you can watch them, naked, in the privacy of your own home. So nobody will judge your top of page...

Subscription fatigue is real. I keep Amazon Prime active for shipping benefits and movies, and also keep Netflix going. Beyond that I allow myself 1 additional streaming service at any given time.

I don't really have patience for watching. I can do that from time to time (RWBY binge once a year), occasionally watching Schola Gladiatoria, JasTownsend, or some history (e.g. Extra Credits) or science channel, for some time, but usually I can't really focus sitting in front of computer and not reading/writing/playing something, and I need to focus to clearly understand spoken English.

They expressed disdain for the whole "evil necromancer" thing so that thread's gone already.

I gave them 9 plot hooks last week. If they don't follow any of them it'll just be tax collectors and spiders. Because why not?

Isn't that what the good lord made VPNs for?

Your use of VPNs is clearly different from mine.

And I suspect Freehold would just ask, "Aren't those for porn?"

EDIT: For those unfamiliar with Virtual Private Networks (VPNs), their "original purpose" was to allow remote workers to securely access their corporate internal networks by encrypting the communication. For example, as a technical trainer I was on the road at least 25% of the time, but I still needed to access my company's internal servers, including the source code, so I used a VPN connection to access them. Working from home for Global Megacorporation is similar. But the reason I say, "original purpose" is that there were also very strong privacy advocates in the early days of the internet. For example, "Pretty Good Protection" (PGP) for emails was done by a private individual who just wanted to protect his emails.

So the "dark web" you're hearing about where you can get pirated movies, porn, and more, is mostly protected by VPNs, and you need to know how to access those VPNs to get in and browse their content. But when I hear VPN, I think, "Access the corporate network."

And I don't think Global Megacorporation has pirated Disney movies anywhere that I'll find.

What VPN are used for anyway?

We have Hulu (I'm OG, been using Hulu since the day it launched) Netflix, and Disney+.

Of the three Disney is the most disposable as the only thing we watch on it is The Simpsons.

Hulu is the one I couldn't live without.

I only have Disney+ because of the free year I got as a Verizon customer. I don’t think it is worth paying for.

But I will watch Hamilton. And Mandalorian was a good show.

Disney+ has will have one thing particularly appealing to me: Loki. I might watch Mandalorian one day as well.

Miss Arya Kitty has found two mice for us in the past 3 days. She hasn’t figured out how to kill them yet (or doesn’t want to), but she does not let them escape.

Last night she helped me catch one. I took it out to the woods and released it. (I have no compunctions about killing mice, but executing them once they are caught seems excessive and gross.)

The one on Saturday met a messier fate...

Kinda gross:
John and I were trying to trap the mouse in the kitchen and it ran for the basement door. I called out to John to make sure it didn’t get down the stairs. He lunged and slammed the door shut - on its head. End of mouse.

Arya gets rewarded with treats for being a good kitty. But also - we apparently have a mouse problem.

The Mandalorian did the one thing we’ve been waiting quite awhile for: told stories in the Star Wars galaxy that didn’t focus on one single family. (Yes, the Skywakers are great, let’s expand our focus a little please.)

Today is (well, was as it is past midnight) Father's Day in Poland.

So I wanted to call my dad... And I couldn't. For some reason I can't make outgoing calls, getting a recorded message that I can't connect because of "technical reasons" (the fact that I got voice message means it will be probably network issue).

I even got my friend to call me, to check if I can receive calls - yup, those work fine. I still have money on my phone account and it is valid until the end of July.

B@+#~!$s.

I ended mailing my mom asking to tell dad. No idea when she decides to check her e-mail, though.

I caught a family-in-the-making once.

It took me a while to get past that.

We’re lucky; in our 29 years of living together we’ve always owned at least one “hunting” cat. Live rodents aren’t an issue.

My parents got our cats we had growing up specifically because we had a mouse/rat problem. It took care of that real quick.

They were outside cats, so there was no mess associated with them except when they decided to leave us a "gift" on the porch.

Yeah, if we get anything they will be snap traps (placed with extreme care where Arya cannot get near them). They usually kill quickly, but every once in a while you maim a mouse instead. Better than most of the alternatives out there.

Its too irregular for food allergies. We eat pretty consistant as to help with MrT's diabetus. So if it was something in the food, I would get it more regularly then about every few months.

I'm suspecting scoliosis, so either a blood vessel or nerve getting pinched causing the horrible stabbing pain. Its high up in my stomach, just below the diaphragm. But to be able to diagnose that, I'd have to get my ass to the hospital the moment it happens. So far we havent managed to achieve that.

LOL. Yeah, let's just say I'm glad the statute of limitations ran out long ago.

My favorite event was climbing over the fence of a CalTrans station to steal enough signs to decorate my room, having a guard spot me, and acting like I was drunk and relieving myself on a wall, and having him move on.

I'm pretty sure that one qualified as felony grand theft simply because of the value of the signs I stole (I needed to cover all the walls of my room, after all).

But:
(a) The statute of limitations is long since past
(b) Once I moved out, I had absolutely no use for the signs, so I ended up "giving them back" by dumping them at a CalTrans site. Not out of a sense of guilt, but just because, "I have no idea how to get rid of these things without getting caught, so I'll just dump 'em where the workers will say, 'Huh' and move on..."

Are you suggesting that NH is a mysterious onion or secretly an ogre?

Growing up in Bourbon County required me to do a few things

1) drink bourbon, although at the time, none was distilled within county limits
2) acquire, during college, a Bourbon County sign.

With the help of one of my fraternity brothers, said sign was acquired. Cars passing by saw two college age men, one appearing to be helping the other who was in the midst of experiencing a stomach purge.

That sign may (or may not) have been a wedding present to a fellow who worked in the spirits industry.

I'm sure many, many people have said it before, but here's an important observation about meetings:

If your co-workers are happy that you canceled a regular meeting, then:
(a) You're holding the meeting too often, and/or
(b) You're not focused enough in the meeting.

A weekly "review the outstanding bugs" meeting got canceled, and I'm ecstatic to have the hour of my day back, because it really is just, "Here are the bugs, let's walk through them one by one for an hour until we run out of time," and I learn virtually nothing that I couldn't learn by just looking at the bug spreadsheet and reading the bugs.

I'll admit, though: Even in my punk days I was always the one who planned out:
- How do I minimize the risk of our getting caught?
- How do I ensure that if we do get caught, the consequences are minor?

One of the few times the gang went out without me (I think I had finals) they managed to get themselves arrested (including a police helicopter and S.W.A.T. team, which they said was pretty darned cool) and hauled in front of the D.A.

Who, of course, because they were upper middle class white kids, just said, "I don't have time for this," and let them go with no charges. (And honestly, the only thing they were caught doing illegal was trespassing.)
