I guess I'm lucky, Jax has the best library system in Florida, even after they've cut the budget by 75% in the last ten years; there's about 20+ branches across town

A tablet is easier to carry than a kindle, MP3 player, web browser, PDA, notepad, etc... :-) :-P
Reason 3: A Kindle full of books is far more easily transported than a library of physical books.
especially when the consolidated object is doing the job maybe a third as well, on a good day, as the individual specialized machines

And honestly, that's my main problem with the whole thing.
Yes, a phone can do all those things. Yes, a tablet can do all those things. But they can't do it as well.
My phone has an eighth the storage space of my MP3 player. And the MP3 player is usually packed full, to the point where I have to haggle and weigh my options when putting music on because invariably something's going to have to get pulled to fit anything new in.
If my phone could hold all the music I carry now on the MP3 player (or more!) as well as do all those other things, I might consider consolidation less irritating. Or at least consider letting it replace the MP3 player, and yes give myself one less thing to carry around. Though it's not really all that annoying - the MP3 player certainly fits in my shirt pocket a lot more comfortably than my phone does. Yet one more thing it does better.
But as it is, it simply doesn't work. It just doesn't have enough space. And that's not even getting into how annoying the music playing program on my phone is.
Same with the Kindle. It holds a ton of books, is very convenient to use, and does its job well. The Kindle program on my phone is clunky and uncomfortable to use, only holds a few books (which takes more storage space away from holding music, if I were still considering using it for that), and is burdened down by annoying, unnecessarily complex menus and navigation tools that I don't want or need.
The problem isn't that I don't like consolidation at all. It's that the consolidation options tend to suck because they try to do everything and half-ass it to make it all fit.

Nexus is a PDF reader on par with Kindle. For casual web browsing, I find tablets in general superior to laptops. I can't think of any PDA tasks except phone calls a Nexus can't do on par with a Blackberry.

If you don't have expandable memory, you need a new phone.

The inside front and back covers are awesome, the front has the best regional map of Cheliax I've yet seen, the back is like Jade Regent (old timey looking paintings), except for evil.
Otherwise, I'm keeping out, in case I can get my brother (the cool one) to run it for me. :-)

The General is planning on a witch that eventually cooks Paladins down into potions (cook people master hex).

I've never been an evil type person myself, but will admit it's intriguing.
Mostly, it's all because of Tammy, who is probably my favorite character I've made right now (also, my first full caster, ever). I'm actually writing her backstory now, which I'm keeping short and sweet.
Personality wise, she's pretty much, how Ron Swanson talks about his ex-wives, with a dash of Dennis Reynolds (especially when he's on Ritalin and casually destroying everything around him).

I wouldn't say they are doing well, I would say other technologies adapted to their existence. I don't need a Kindle, my phone IS a kindle, as is my neighbors tablet. The Kindle I got for my wife started collecting dust some time ago, as did her mp3 player and other such devices(that i bought). I'm sure they still work, but I wouldn't go out to buy a new one. Still, mileage varies *widely* here, one of my players still swears by his ANCIENT tablet that has become his tabletop gaming platform.For a while people thought this pdf boom would die when kindle and other similar devices didAnd considering those devices are still around and still doing quite well for themselves, even that prediction has failed.I can read my Kindle books on my phone, but it is immensely uncomfortable, as well as unwieldy to operate the in-phone Kindle program. My actual Kindle, on the other hand, is far more comfortably sized and shaped for long reading sessions - being about the size of your average paperback - and extremely simple to use without the more complex menus and submenus the phone version comes with.
I'm extremely happy with it and wouldn't trade it for the alternative options for the world. I'm rather dreading the point if something were to happen to it or its lifespan simply happened to give out, as replacing it would likely force me to get a tablet that would try to do more stuff when all I want is another digital reading device, nothing more.
But I also still keep music on my MP3 player rather than my phone - the MP3 player holds FAR more (16 GB, compared to a paltry 2 on the phone), and again is far less complex to use. I do use the phone for on-the-go web browsing and for Skype when I'm away from home, but that's limited by my monthly data allowance or access to unpassworded WiFi, so I'm not constantly using it to play stuff off Youtube or anything.
So maybe I'm the odd one out, for preferring NOT to shift...
if I was still on my galaxy s3, I'd be 100% with you, but my note 3 has changed the game. The processor is so much better I can read books upon books on here, the larger screen helps as well. I read so much more on this and that's not even including comixology, which actually works on this thing!

Yeah that's all I know. There's nothing written on it that identifies it as anything further, and I don't remember anything else about it from when I bought it a year ago. I was looking at prices more than names.

I mean I'm using a Galaxy light and a year ago it was $50 without a contract and it does EVERYTHING and has expanded memory slots.

I'll be at home on my couch, with both my laptops on the table in front of me (that's where I store them), and I still browse the internet on my tablet instead of using them. Laptops are just so awkward and uncomfortable to use, and were only an improvement compared to desktops.

Speaking of memory space, the one thing the Nexus lacks is an SD slot. No big, though. I bought a micro USB/regular USB hybrid flash drive. 20 bucks got me 64 gigs, and I slot it into the tablets charging port. Can also use it to easily transfer files from computer to tablet, or between school computersnwith the expensive GIS software I don't own. It's why I got a 16 gig tablet instead of dropping $100 more for 32 gig. Flash drives are so much cheaper.

I guess part of the issue is that I'm a sucker for simplicity.
I'd rather have something that's plain and functional than something with all the bells and whistles.
So when I went to get a phone, I got something with the bare minimum of phone stuff. It does its job, does it well, and doesn't have a bunch of excess things to deal with (or perhaps more accurately, they don't intrude to the point of interfering with the phone's main purposes).
Ditto with the Kindle. I got it to read books with; it does that and does it well, and doesn't need to do anything else.

Yeah using a mouse with a context sensitive menu is the fastest and easiest way to use a computer. Tablets and phones don't have that ability making them a pain for me to use... so if I have a choice I always surf with the mouse on a real computer. If I don't have a choice, then I use what is available.
