I'd rather have something that's plain and functional than something with all the bells and whistles.

So when I went to get a phone, I got something with the bare minimum of phone stuff. It does its job, does it well, and doesn't have a bunch of excess things to deal with (or perhaps more accurately, they don't intrude to the point of interfering with the phone's main purposes).

Ditto with the Kindle. I got it to read books with; it does that and does it well, and doesn't need to do anything else.

I have a brother like this. He refuses to get a smart phone and only uses a phone that basically just makes calls. He still has an iPod too. My mother gets frustrated with him, but he just wants to use it for calls so that's all he gets.

Yay! It's been awhile, I'd like to thank whoever posted last, and my complete denial of winter.

Yeah, I didn't even have a smartphone - and had no desire for one - until I moved into the new apartment and actually needed something that could make appointments, check internet, or order food ahead of time when I wasn't at home. Prior to moving out on my own, I just didn't need those things, so there was no sense in spending the extra money to get a phone that had them. The phone I had before could make calls just fine and had a slide-out keyboard for texting, and since those were all I needed a phone to do at that time, it was very sufficient for the three years I had it.

So many options, so little time...

Option paralysis is a real thing, that's why I started at the top, and stopped there.

When in denial, it's best not to over think it.

I drive everyone nuts.

I work for a multi-billion dollar software company after starting in tech working at a real-time software company. (Our software ran the Mars Pathfinder. Woo hoo!) I build all my own computers, maintain a Linux file share for my department, and am considered the "guru" of software installation, configuration, and integration by several departments.

Yet I own the free flip phone that came with my Verizon contract (a Samsung Gusto, I believe), won't do voice mail on it, and don't have it on my person most of the time. I am much like Orthos: I want a device that does one thing well, rather than dozens of things crappily. I was hard-pressed to hide my amusement when everyone's smart phones crapped out on our ski trip in Washington, and my phone just happily kept right on working. "NH, can I use your phone? Mine won't work here!" was music to my crotchety ears.

I have an ancient fax/scanner/laser printer next to me, and I wish I'd bought just a laser printer because I think it would have survived longer.

I love the feel and smell of books; there's nothing like curling up under thick covers on a cold winter night, reading a riveting hardcover that just smells right.

Pre-Paizo, I spent my money buying Easton Press' "100 Greatest Books Ever Written" series.

I love me some physical books. Especially the heft and the smell.

You don't know what a cold winter night truly feels like, but I agree whole heartedly with what you say. :-)

I'm living in Arizona, working at a solar power plant, and enjoying a gamer girlfriend! What's up with you?

incredibly happy beyond words that you are happy with not just the move but the job and the girlfriend who games!

So good to see you are doing well.

For those who don't know, tequila is the FIRST PAIZONIAN I EVER MET IN REAL LIFE and introduced me to baron arem hasevaum and a few others. He is wonderful.

Aw, shucks! I'm glad to hear that things are better for you since the last we emailed. :)

How's the Paizo scene looking in NYC? Sadly I'm not doing any gaming myself, but as always, I am tinkering away at a fantasy heartbreaker. ;)

Hey! Heeeeeeyyyyyyy~! TS! Good to see you here!

I strongly recommend trying out some solo games!

They can be pretty great, though, of course, the pacing and structure is vastly different from multi-party games.

Glad you seem to be doing well!

Going well! I'm engaged, which is exciting. The big day is in December.

Work is good. Gaming, not so much apart from PbPs. Nothing like our awesome one-shot.

I'll be at home on my couch, with both my laptops on the table in front of me (that's where I store them), and I still browse the internet on my tablet instead of using them. Laptops are just so awkward and uncomfortable to use, and were only an improvement compared to desktops.

Tablet more comfortable for web browsing? Bluettooth mouse then?

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Yeah I can't stand touchscreen stuff for very long, I get fed up with it on my phone after a very short amount of time. I've been half tempted to get a bluetooth mouse exclusively for using with my phone, if it works.

Rejoice fawtl health goddesses, I have come up with a workout routine that makes sense.

Monday- Heavy weight day/strength training
Tuesday- Cool off, endurance day/legs with mom
Wednesday- Old fashioned calisthenics, stretches, martial arts and Tai chi
Thursday- See above
Friday- See above
Saturday- As above, but outside, with sword and long/mid stick training in park.
Sunday- Rest, heavy meditation, prep for monday.
I think I can do this.

When I was living in South Florida, I met hundreds, if not thousands, of people from NY and NJ who would move to Florida and never shut up about how awesome NY and NJ were.

Apparently not so awesome that you'd stay.

And I wish I could say among that massive number I met even one that was a decent human being.

Admittedly, my sample isn't random, but the sample size is huge. Horrible human beings, every last one of them.

I know there's exceptions, but I believe we discussed that you guys exile all the a******s to Florida.

I don't believe in judging an entire group, nor is there any truth behind my bitterness; but stereotypes are humorous to poke at the ridiculousness of. The entire foundation of modern comedy is satire and juxtaposition of the ridiculous with seriousness to emphasize it's ludicrous nature. Please don't take that as serious. A geographic location doesn't make you an a**. It does have a cultural impact, but obviously all people react to their surroundings differently.

as we have said before, we exile our undesirables to Florida. I'm sorry you have to deal with them so much, they can really ruin the perspective of our glorious state for others.
