Yeah, these are the kinds of incidents that scare me. Wanna get me with a horror story that doesn't involve gore? This kind of "loss of self" is a great way to do it.

What scares me more is the dabbling in illicit substances that can lead to mental deterioration. I'm certain I'm on the way to losing my mind when the amount of brilliance is walks a narrow tight rope over to eccentricism. I fear things like Alzheimer's and paranoid schizophrenia as well as chronic depression is hereditary in my family genes.

It's probably why I'm such an information sponge and read a lot of non-fiction to keep abreast of things.

Well, BN does have a 'diverse' collection of offerings...

No doubt. A wide assortment of wares, customers, and characters.

Funny Sidenote -- A gaming friend of mine from B&N used the label gun to mark the "ADD" (Attention Deficit Disorder) Shelf the "AD&D" Shelf in the Psychology Department. Nobody noticed it for months. It never obfuscating things for the patrons, it became the best kind of inside Joke.

Although sometimes I think "Attention Deficits & Disorders" would be an AWESOME roleplaying game....

"Ooo! Look! String!!!" (rolls 1d6) "PINWHEELS!"

I've read elsewhere that CLAMP leaves quite the impression ...

I see what you did there, and am thankful I do not have a beverage handy. Lungful of coffee offsets humor.

ooooo... so great.

I think psychopharmacology gets a really bad rap from many people. I know so many people it's helped a whole HECK of a lot. My Parent's marriage got WORLDS better after my mom got some medication, and I have a best friend who I might not be able to count on if they didn't take Prozac.

I knew somebody that was taking "Lorazepam" for anxiety and it basically changed her from a very upset individual into a fearless heroine. Hard to deny the merit of that kind of stuff.

Yeah, it'd be a nice relaxing way to the spend the evening, I agree, but as far as I know for the last 5-6 years, it's the only thing my parents do. But, it's better than nothing, right?

Barnes & Noble would kick me out if I did that. I would be able to read almost any one book in a 3-4 hour visit. :) I'd never have to spend money on books again!!!

Whew. Our AC blew up a couple of days ago and it's been in the hundreds every day. We pretty much stick to the basement, try to get cool air inside at night, and drink a lot of slushy frozen water. Anybody got any other hints for coping? I know some of you guys have been deployed in hot climes before.

Treppa, if you have any standing fans or can buy one or two tilting fans, aim the fan towards the ceiling. I know it sounds funny but I live in the Southwest where its 110+ all summer long. Hot air rises and accumulates around the roof and ceiling. cooling the roof or ceiling will lower the house temp but 10 to 15 degrees. I know it doesn't sound like much, but I'm comfortable in climates up to 95 degrees.

Second close as many unused rooms as you can. This will allow you to consolidate cooler air in rooms you are using.

Shut off as many electrical devises as you can. power packs produce heat.

Keep hydrated and keep the pets hydrated too.

Hope this helps.

Trazadone and Ambien CR are the only two I've been taking to do sleeping disordors. I'm gonna start taking trazodone once my insurance kicks in again.

FYI, a lot of places offer cheap (usually around $4) prescriptions for certain drugs and trazodone is usually on that list. Might want to check out a walmart pharmacy.

If you were taking a date to Central Park, what would be the must-see spot?

This turns out to be a question of immediate significance.

I know both my sister and mother had some bad luck with antidepressants. They were both misdiagnosed and are actually bipolar, and antidepressants really screw up bipolar folks. Like some have said, the right medication makes people more like themselves, but the wrong one can make a mess.

THAT is a tough one...

ME, PERSONALLY... I would take her to see Cleopatra's needle -- It's beautiful, and timeless, and in a city where everything changes it reminds me how some things remain constant... you can spin this into some wistful and romantic energy.

Depending on the season The conservatory Gardens (It's three parts, french/English and another one that escapes me. You can learn a lot about a girl by the kinds of cultures she likes, and if she shows a preference for one kind of garden over another it can lead you to make other deductions about affinities and tastes. Make sure the gardens are open before you go, and get intel (or better yet do a run of the grounds beforehand) to make sure the garden is in proper season. (it can also be easy for some people to miss the needle, so get the lay on that too)

BUT THE REAL date-killer about central park is the fact that the MET is on one side, and the museum of natural history is on the other. Do your homework -- If you wind up on the MET side, Throw a few bucks and pull her inside and take her into the Temple of Dendur. If you might scare her that she'd think you're a skinflint pay full freight, but if she's cool, you won't be in there for very long so a few bucks each (they never stopped me) and you can steal inside, the Temple is right there from the entrance (it gets most of it's sun from an outside wall) and it's basically an ancient cathedral, with a water feature... and where you were damn hot a minute ago you pulled her into air conditioning... take a long walk around the outside and then explore the interior if your patter is working out or you can keep her talking. Who says you have to spend ALL DAY at the museum, and nothing says spontaneity like -- "We could spend weeks here, but I just pulled you inside for a few minutes to see something gorgeous... soon, we'll have dinner." Or if you're really enjoying the museum you can explore more, and more, and more.

JUST as awesome, if not more so -- is the friggin' butterfly conservatory at the museum of natural history. For a relatively minor additional fee, you can take your partner into a hermetically sealed atrium FILLED with live and gorgeous butterflies, including the Spectacular Blue Morpho (Desna would be proud) and the impossibly large Atlas Moth. Find out if it's going on, and if there is any schedule you have to make... but don't let it on that you have an itinerary except maybe to say that you'd like to tarry but you'd hoped that if possible you can show her something just off the side of the park. BUTTERFLIES ARE MAGIC.

So yeah, thats what I'd do -- But I can't urge enough if you like the idea, OWN IT, and do the intel beforehand -- I can't urge enough if you could be serious about the girl, and it's something you'd enjoy doing... do it once without her so you can make it look easy. Not that any of this is hard... but there is a big difference between taking a girl with you on a new venture and letting the cards fall where they may, to her realizing two hours in that she's just been following you and having a wonderful time.

Show no quarter and you might just end up sharing one, brother. Good hunting.

If you're scouting the park though, maybe see if you can make Belvedere castle a waypoint. You can see a lot from up there, so if you can see a lot of park without walking a lot of park that's a plus. If the weather's nice you may consider a paddle-boat rental (bring a little picnic maybe?)

All of these aren't that bad, and even with the museum on the table it isn't that expensive, especially if you're a student or can finesse not paying full freight just to duck in to see one exhibit. Food off of central park can get pricey though... beware!

Update -- Butterfly conservatory is closed until October. If you are still dating at that point, don't miss it! ;)

OTOH, I won't discredit SSRI medications, outright. I was on the way through a series of testing out different forms of medication to treat a specific kind of anxiety (unrelated to performance, pre-empting you jokers), but when I lost my COBRA coverage, I could no longer pursue the regimen and had to simply wean myself off what medication I had remaining and discontinue treatment as I could no longer afford it.

While you may not be aware, the majority who are active in here are aware that I had gastric bypass surgery over four years ago. It's one of those deals that while I may have had complication post-surgery within twelve months of the procedure (a bout of appendicitis & cholecystitis), I literally became half the man I used to be (with regard to physical size). It came with some interesting new baggage that involved in the way my body processes things with regard to absorption and where those (lack of) nutrients are directed that can't merely be regulated by simply taking pre-natal vitamins to accommodate any losses. Sometimes, the effects are psychological.

It's interesting what one's body make-up may react to certain drugs, but not to other. Morphine can't touch upon the pain that it is intended to manage for me, but Dilaudid (hydromorphone) does the job. It's a morphine synthetic, so you'd think that the reactions would be similar? Not in my case.

I wish I had a better understanding of chemical / molecular compounds, but that's one of my weaknesses to fully grasp in understanding. Fascinating, though.

Thanks for the tips, Vicon! I love the Temple of Dendur; if we have the time, I might recommend it.

The guy I have the date with is a Long Islander who admitted he had never been to Central Park, so that is why we need to go there. He likes gardens, so I'll check out what's in season at the conservatory gardens and maybe Cleopatra's needle as well.

Dude, you could probably tape a $100 bill to your forehead, wearing a Rolex encrusted with diamonds, a ton of real gold, and carrying a full load of consumer electronics and walk from 125th to Battery Park and not even get a little nervous these days. I was wandering around the lower east side with a backpack and a laptop waiting for the person I was crashing with and never even got a look from anyone.

Lower East Side was no big deal- saw that coming miles away. Williamsburg is a bit of a tragedy, but an entire generation of people of hispanic/latino and yes, italian descent retired at *exactly* the same time and moved outside of Brooklyn.
