Sorry for what is probably a stupid question.

One of the events is for levels 5-9 (pregens available).

I've played exactly 1 Pathfinder Society game (at spellstorm yesterday) and quite enjoyed it (thanks to everybody involved).

But the experience made me pretty certain that pregen characters are kind of, uh, lacking (a cleric with no knowledge of Religion is kinda silly). And most certainly nowhere near as fun as creating ones own character.

While I'm new to Pathfinder in general I have lots of 3.0 and 3.5 experience.

Is there any way to create my own higher level character?

If there isn't, there really, really should be :-). Lots of people are like me and prefer mid level play with our own characters.

Glad you had fun at Spellstorm! We were lucky to have some great GMs!

Currently, the only ways to play a higher level character in a scenario are with a pre-gen, or build your character up to that level. You can also advance a character to a higher level in one of the sanctioned modules (ex. Cult of the Ebon Destroyers - level 8).

I scheduled Rebel's Ransom to give an opportunity for any higher level PFS players in SW Ontario to play something that isn't an introductory scenario. If it turns out that there is no one able to play that adventure, but I have players for something else, I will be prepared to substitute another adventure.

Thank you for answering.

The following is honestly intended as constructive feedback, not just whinging because I'm disappointed :-). Please take it as such.

While I understand your position (and I fully recognize that the "you" in that is almost certainly not Neil Shackleton :-)) I admit that I think that this is one place where your "competitor" (LFR) has made the far better decision.

Being able to play a character that I've created is a huge draw for me and the lack of this ability is a huge disincentive for me to play. This means that I certainly won't be entering that particular slot.

Not only would it let me make the character that I wanted, it would also make me far more familiar with the abilities of that character which would presumably translate to a better game for everybody.

In fact, I think that you could make a strong argument that one could ONLY bring in characters played to the appropriate level and not pregens.

Its reasonably peripheral to my main point but if this is the policy I would REALLY urge you (Pathfinder) to make better pregens. Ones that both actually follow the rules (the 1st level cleric and 7th level cleric and wizard have errors that I quickly found) and also ones that are reasonably optimized.

Redoing the pregens is something that they (Paizo) has said is on their list of things to do. However, that list is several miles long and there are things that take priority to redoing pregens that, while not the greatest, are playable in a society game...

This is the kind of thing that I admit that I never understand.

WOTC makes exactly the same mistake.

There are some things that fans just do really, really well. Often significantly better than the game designers.

And creating interesting legal characters is one of those things.

I'd bet a significant sum of money that if they just turned it over to the fans on these boards they'd have more characters than they could handle in very short order. Characters that were fun to play, reasonably optimized, and legal to boot.

I'm sure somebody will point out that the fan generated characters may not be legal. But the existing characters are mechanically wrong too. Admittedly, they're wrong in NOT spending points but they're still wrong.

If I was in charge at Paizo I'd just ask the members of the society to
1) Create some pregens for society events
2) Police those pregens to make sure that they're legal
3) Vote on the 6 of each tier (or whatever) that become official pregens.

Paizo knows that we want the new pregens -- I believe there was mention in another thread of a portion of new pregens being released soon..

Paizo is a great company that does listen to their custimer base and tries to do what they can to make all our gaming dreams come true. All they ask from us in return is a bit of patience so that they have time to get them all done.

Even if the fans made the pregens, Paizo would still have to look them over for legality.. putting one more thing on their plate.

Note: I ran Rebel's Ransom four times at Gencon 2010 and three of those tables used pregens. The pregens are acceptable for playing this module -- as long as someone is smart enough to play at least one meat shield class.

Rebel's Ransom is also probably the best "Old-Skool convention-style" module in Season 2 of Pathfinder Society, in my opinion. Lot of dungeoneering and classic puzzles - wee bit of roleplaying - and enough combat at the right times to make it all work.

Sure, rub it in :-).

I'm still not playing with a pregen :-) :-). Although it sounds like the bard character that I'd mentally prepared might not have been the best fit :-)

I'm not being argumentative in saying this so please don't take it as that, however, I was able to play it because I've put the time in and had a legal character of the appropriate level. I know you've used other living campaigns as examples in how things should be done. Paizo is it's own company and we get to play in their world.. with their rules.

We aren't going to get unlimited replay, and we aren't going to get to play ahead in normal modules. If you want to play ahead there are some that are sanctioned for that and they have their threads.

*ends threadjack so this can go back to being about the convention*

Space is actually getting pretty limited for PFS at Gryphcon.

Friday night - Frozen Fingers 2 spaces, Fallen Fortress Full
Sat Morn - Kingdom of the Impossible 1 space, City of Strangers I Full
Sat Aft - Rebel's Ransom 5 spaces, City of Strangers II Full
Sat Eve - Special 7 spaces
Sun Morn - Midnight Mauler Full, Prince of Augustana 6 spaces, Throaty Mermaid 6 spaces

It is possible that another table may be added in the Sat morn/sft slots if there is demand. It is also possible that the Rebel's Ransom session may be switched to another City of Strangers, if desired.
