Advice on how to remove PCs for a short period of time + help on FotSG

Rise of the Runelords

Dark Archive

Hi

One of the trickiest part for me is when players don't come and I end up with 2 options.
1 the character is played by another player.
2 The character becomes an NPC. a lot of work for DM specially when u reach high levels.

These first 2 options may be quite tricky if things become ugly. What if the character dies ? or swears to serve the evil king ? or whatever ?

Then the 3rd possiblity is that they disappear to some other tasks.
I try to make it plausible but sometimes well the excuse is really meeeh.

Last friday 3 of my players didn't turn up for the FOTSG scenario and i was left with 2 players who really wanted to play.

They were just about to step on the storval plateau.

Basically and as had no good ideas, they disappeared in a flash only remaining the one who had the sihedron medallion and another elf who comes from another plane (it's a new player who took one of his FR character). The other characters didn't have their sihedron medallion
so they disappeared
I was too lazy to find any other excuses. Now I'm trying to find some explanations (reverse engineering)

Spoiler:

One of the character (a ranger) is quite greedy so I thought it would be quite cool to have him teleported into mokmurian's lair, chained and ready to be sacrificed in a few days with the other villagers. If he comes back I believe Conna seeing one of the powerful adventurer could help him break free with a few of his items.

two other characters: a paladin and a bard have also disappeared "by magic". The latter would be more afflicted by wrath and the former by pride.

would you have an idea of explanation of how I could explain this disappearance ?

One question also for FOTSG

Spoiler:

in mokmurians lair, where is the ritual of Sihedron supposed to happen ?
In room B11 ? I got the feeling that this room is only for storing prisonners and marking them with the rune. They are not sacrificed there IMO.
One interesting thing is the note of many dragons sacrificed and I thought the idea was just great as they are the greediest creatures on Golarion. I thought it would be cool to have all this dragons corpses and skeletons stored somewhere. My players would surely understand this reference and would find mokmurian even more frightening

One last thing, my characters are now being very sneaky and are entering the lair without combats. How would you handle it ? for Xps and rewards ?

Thanks to share feedbacks if you have some ;o)

Liberty's Edge

I had an idea:

Do you really need spoiler tags in a DM advice thread?:

Since you have zotted away a group of PCs, I would put them a little further forward in the story and have a fish out of water encounter where you could foreshadow one of the future adventure sites. Here's two options:

1) They get pulled into Runeforge by one of the factions there, perhaps the Abjurant folk before their halls get blown up. The story is, the PCs are scried upon via the Medallion and pulled there to be interrogated in some kind of temporary stasis field or something. You can have the faction ask them about the Lesser Runewell in Sandpoint and their interactions with Karzoug's minions and what's happened in the intervening years or something.

2) They get pulled into the presence of the Scribbler for similar purposes using slightly different magic - questions about the "future" and about the runelords and the runewell and whatnot.

The idea is, you can use this encounter to fill in some of the back story, plant the seeds about Runeforge or even that there might be more dungeon below Sandpoint. Maybe ask about the lost cities (Xin-Shalast et al.).

I would probably choose one of the more neutral future NPCs for this like any of the factions rather than Mokmurian because it strains credibility why he wouldn't just scry and fry the party if he was so interested in their activities.

I guess either of these encounters could almost work like some of the flash-forward "future" scenes from the movie 12 Monkeys. Really, the connection between the adventures is tenuous enough that adding small out-of-context spoilers like this might help the story to feel more connected and would make the PCs' future pursuit of Runeforge feel less railroady.

If you don't like that, it could be someone connected with Ft. Rannick or the Fey folk around there but I think that would be a missed opportunity.

As for the missing XP, I would give them XP for any bypassed encounters, provided they resolve them by killing the boss and breaking up his alliance somehow. Putting the missed treasure in one hoard is easy if you're worried about PC wealth by level.

To be honest I havn't bought the last 2 books yet but it looks like I will have to hurry. I have a couple of weeks before we play but it looks like a very good idea to foreshadow what's coming.

as for my final question ... do you know where is the sihedron ritual supposed to happen in mokmurian's lair ?
where are the "important" civilians ?
