Ninja Equipment

Ninja Discussion: Round 1

Sovereign Court

cant wait to see what kind of cool gear this class gets...the water walking boots...the egg shell bombs and the breathing tube..reminds me of a story i read about a ninja who hid in the asian variation of the outhouse waiting for his target to come in for his buisness and thrusts the sword straight up killing his target then escaping thru the sluice undetected...like anyone wants to patrol their sewer

it's probably not relevant to a fantasy setting. but myth busters showed the water walking boots don't work. though they figured they may have been used to walk on rice patties.

the blowgun in the water had similar problems.

that said it's all perfectlybfine in a fantasy game.

Just noticed that Ninja get a free exotic weapon feat (Bastard Sword) with the highest damaging 1 handed weapon in the game. That's going to be some ugly Sneak Attack damage Dual wielding those.

not really, you just increased your multiple attribute dependancy in exchange for half of a feat. you also now have slightly lower defenses and a lower to hit bonus in exchange for a little bit more damage per hit. you now also have to take double slice but you saved yourself power attack due to the fact that taking it makes your poorer accuracy even lower. and because you have less dump stat options, you have fewer points and thus lower primary stats. magical katanas are especially rare as well.

I am a bit concerned that the iconic Ninja clearly is wielding some sort of Kusari-Gama, but is apparently not proficient with it. Unless the list of weapon proficiencies is incomplete, due to the equipment first showing up in Ultimate Combat, of course.

Also, is there any reason the Ninja should not take two levels of Monk, besides the alignment restriction? :) Two bonus feats, unarmed strike, flurry of blows, evasion. Quite the overlap, I'd say.

I'm kinda hoping that they'll introduce the ninja-to, rather than the katana for the ninja.

Actually they said the blow gun under water was plausible, two of them untrained managed to score hits one with fatal accuracy. With training and learning to better compensate for refraction and it is possible to do this in realistic settings.

Water-walking boots failed however as did arrow catching.

I like that they get the katana if only so I can give my character a more ninja gaiden feel.

Catching arrows with over-sized fletchings is possible/plausible with training (they make the arrows slower or something; ALL of my roommates took archery last semester and somehow this came up). In a fantasy setting, it passes far more readily than fire balls.

What gets me is that the simple things like flash power and smoke pellets are so freaking expensive. A smoke pellet makes one 5' square fill with smoke for ONE round; 50gp for that trick. W. T. F?

Exploding tags for shuriken would be nifty, but I would houserule it as a special alchemists' fire attached to a shuriken attack for ease of use.

I would like to see the ninja-to make the proficiency list, along with some of the more ninja type weapons.

I notice the blowgun & the Kusari-gama are missing as well.

The old 3.0/3.5 Oriental andventures book had some good basic info on the weapons.

I would also like to see the Katana, ninja-to, and wakizashi stats done so that they are not repeats of the old 3.0 & 3.5 stats

but thats just my humble opinion

Ninja trick: Ki Charge.

I'll assume that you are assuming that I overlooked that. In reality, I ignored it, because it's too far into the DBZ realm for my taste. I'm all for a fantasy ninja, but I think there is something to be said for awesome gear, too.

And I just love those moments when a baddie turns to see the shuriken that just impacted the wall next to him has a fast-burning piece of paper with a smiley face on it.

You would be correct in assuming that I assumed you had overlooked it, gomenasai.

Silver Crusade

I've mentioned it before, but i really, really want to see kunai added to the game for the ninja. They add so much flavor to the idea of what many perceive ninja to be now. Very useful in both melee and ranged fighting both offensively and defensively.

I was under the impression Dex was what required two weap fighting. Yes you might argue it isn't much of a boost but for those GMs that say hey you can replace that with the sabretooth blade its basically a weaker one why not, its a problem. Not to mention using a light weapon in your offhand, or shurikens and it becomes pretty lethal.

Its also not half a feat, heirloom weapon is being errated because it was OP.

based on what?

The Kunai is a dagger.

Pfft! Dagger on a string!

I realy want the same thing. The old listing for the weapons left a sore spot for me. Most of them where done as a cut and past. Using weapons that are not remotely like them in use.

Kunai is a broad bladed dagger used for digging holes or entrenching. They could use it to dig shallow holes (just large enough to drop into and curl into a ball) on along a preplanned escape route and cover them with something like camo netting, and use said hole to "disappear" when being chased.

Like many ninja weapons, what makes it interesting is not how much damage it does, but what ninjas use it for when they aren't in combat.
