And no, I don't mean that anybody at Paizo is going to have a baby or two. As much as cool that would be !

Rumors abound that Paizo is hiring a new designer to boost the crunch output ... a name well known in the D&D circles ... perhaps it's just a false whistle, or perhaps something is afoot ?

Liberty's Edge

Rumors???

This is the first I've heard of this ... could you expand any? Where did you hear these rumors?

An additional designer, especially a well known one, would be very cool!

Release the Monte Cook rumors, Smithers!!! ;)

I will not reveal my informers. They risk a lot to deliver the news.

And it isn't Monte. However, the person in question used to be employed by the same company as Monte ... wait, what was it ... Sorcerers by the Shore ? Witches of the Waterways ? I can never remember ...

Aw...I was hoping you were talking about Greg Costikyan. Pathfinder could use a little influence from Toon and Paranoia. :-)

Ah, OK. When you said "Rumors abound ..." what you actually meant was that someone told you ...

Got it.

Yeah, I was kidding about Monte, although it would seem pretty likely that, assuming this is in fact true, the person is an ex WOTC person, since Paizo seems to be slowly acquiring all the best 3E era WOTC folks.

Can't wait to find out if this is true!

A fine shot Hogarth, but a miss.

We're talking about a game designer, so Dave T. is kind of in the wrong zone for this. Besides, I think he vanished from the face of Earth in mysterious circumstances.

And no, it's not Mike Mearls or anybody currently active at WotC. Keep guessing !

Liberty's Edge

Dave Noonan or Jonathan Tweet?

Silver Crusade

Pathfinder Adventure Path Subscriber

Nope. But man, would I love for Johnathan "Ars Magica" Tweet to join Paizo !

Liberty's Edge

Oh I hear ya; that man has got an amazing mind for awesome game mechanics.

Okay, I'll try one more guess: Andy Collins?

Silver Crusade

Pathfinder Adventure Path Subscriber

Nope, not Andy C. as well.

You need to seek deeper in that company's past.

A hint: the person in question has a recent writing credit in a Paizo product. And given that he is a game system designer, that should point you in the right direction !

Double hint: one of my informants let me know with his dying breath that the news is out. You can't stop the information !

Liberty's Edge

Did this person work with someone that was just recently hired by Paizo???

Silver Crusade

All right guys, I'll just write it here.

The person is S...

*knock knock*

Sec, somebody at the door.

Cosmo ? You ? Here ? What ... why are you holding that teddy bear ? Wha... leak ? What leak ? I swear, I know nothing ! I never wanted to... *AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHH*

I sent out a press release so it isn't a rumor.

We hired Stephen Radney-MacFarland as a Designer. He'll be starting sometime in the next week or so. :)

Good to see the all star staff at Paizo getting all-starier.

That's right. I made up a new word for this occasion.

You should go all the way and say the staff at Paizo is getting hifernipt.

hifernipt = more then all star

Liberty's Edge

They're hifernipt all around!

Nothing against Steve, but I was secretly hoping for Jeff Grubb. There are so many books on my shelf with his name on them. :)

+1 for Grubb, he's got a lot of class.

And in the meantime I pray the gods it's not Bruce Cordell.

Well now, with his focus having been on Modern and Star Wars does this mean Pathfinder Modern might be round the corner?

That's a pretty huge leap. We might have another idea or two for basic ol' Pathfinder before we start hitting you with Diet Pathfinder, Pathfinder Vanilla, Pathfinder Lite, and so forth.

As for Stephen, he's been doing some bang up work for us in the past months and was vital to the creation of the Advanced Players Guide. That, along with being local, available, a friend of many of us here, and our ever increasing workload were just some of the stars that aligned to make this a good fit. He also has an expansive resume beyond his work on Modern and Star Wars, with a ton of credits, many of which should be especially familiar to members of the RPGA. Expect Stephen to pen his own "Welcome to Paizo" blog a bit later this coming week.

Hmm, I hope this news means that either:
1) Paizo are taking on more staff so that they have some spare to send to PaizoCon UK in 2011 and 2012. (Rumours that Richard Pett ate Nicolas Logue the first year, and Josh Frost this past year are completely untrue; so are probaby the rumours about Mr. Pett's 'long term guest suite' run by gas spore duelists. Just because he writes for a game formerly known as Dungeons and Dragons it doesn't follow that Mr. Pett actually has any literal dungeon facilities for test runs of idea which he trials on hapless industry specialists... ;) )
2) It's being done to get things moving on 'Pathfinder Basic', the introductory game.

Of course if both are true, in at least general outline, then that's extra good news.

It means #2 for sure, but not just the Intro Game—it means more resources for ALL our rulebook stuff. Whether or not it means #1... we'll see. It DOES mean that we'll be having more folks to handle the workload, which means sending folks to ANY convention means less disruption back at the office, and thus I suspect making it more likely that we'll actually have the resources to actually send folks to conventions now and then.

Actually, the older news of "We finally have someone in the marketing position" is more good news for the possibility of Paizo folks going to PaizoCon UK than anything else.

It was, but he left early so I didn't get to congratulate him in person, but I asked Jason to pass my congratulations on to him for me.

Wish I had known about him being hired before I met him, then when he told me his name was Steve I would have caught on to who he was.

Wait we are going to have an SKR and SRM, that might be confusing we better call them both Bruce just to keep it clear.

REALLY !? That's a huge, strike that, GARGANTUAN news to me! This is something that I felt would be great but wasn't expecting it for at least a looong time.

My boys (5 and 9) are facinated by the books but it's a bit "rule-heavy" for them so I wing-house-rule-basic it along for them and their friends.

How, Where, When can I learn more about this?

(sorry Stephen, I'm glad for you joining Paizo too but...)

Beyond confirming that we're working on an intro game, we haven't yet said much more about it yet. Beyond asking, "What would YOU like to see in an intro game?"

Howdy everyone,

Thanks for the kind words. Oh, and sometimes I wake up in the morning disappointed that I’m not Jeff Grubb ;-) I’ve been a fan of Jeff since I was a teenager, and also have a lot of his books lining my shelves.

He’s busy with that bundle of awesome that will be Guildwars 2 over at ArenaNet, and I think that’s a good thing.

I want to say I am excited to join Paizo. I’ve been a huge fan of the company since day one. I remember the day that Erik told me that the publications section of Wizards of the Coast was spinning off as their own company, and knew that group was destined for great things. I look forward to contributing to the great Pathfinder line and learning from Lisa, Erik, James, Jason, Wes, Sean, and all the other talented folks at Paizo.

For the record, I didn’t work on d20 Modern. I was that RPGA guy for a great many years (and worked with both Erik and Jason during those crazy days). I was the Organized Play lead for the development of 3.5. I have worked on 3.5, 4e, Star Wars Saga Edition, and Pathfinder. I teach game design at a couple of colleges, have my own blog where I talk about RPG design, its business, and the future of digital tools for (www.neogrognard.com), and have a column for Dungeon magazine titled “Save My Game.” I also paint minis professionally. I’ve done some work for Paizo's GameMastery line, and have done a number of paint masters for both the D&D and Star Wars minis lines.

As you can see I’m a big snarling geek. As you can imagine, I should fit in just fine here.

Oh, and Jason teases me about my pony hair, but I think he’s just jealous.

So a tiny bit of Grubb envy? OK, I must admit that I have it too, but I try not to let on much when I run into him. There's nothing more awkward than running into your heroes and degenerating into a stuttering self-conscious buffoon because you happened to dig Spelljammer and his Alias novels!

But this is your thread. Congrats on the new gig at Paizo!

LOL. I will freely admit that I do love lots of things about 4e. Before you start throwing bricks, hear me out.

First off, I helped build it. I worked on it for a number of years, and until you hit the Essentials line it's hard to find a 4e book that doesn’t have my name in the credits. I still do freelance work for the system. It's a mature love, though. It’s got history, with both good times and bad. I love it for its strengths and flaws and I'm very cognizant of both.

I plan on taking that knowledge and experience and applying it toward Pathfinder. I know that the Pathfinder fan may like some ideas in 4e, but they want a different experience and application of those ideas. I also know that people like to play Pathfinder because it is an excellent evolution of the best game on the planet, and they don’t want anyone to mess with what makes it awesome. I plan to make sure that you get what you want in the best form possible. Period.

That’s the Paizo philosophy and I think it is the best one in the industry. It’s one of the main reasons that when I was offered the job, I jump in it.

So let’s confirm some crits, shall we?
