Wiz+sorc prestige class

Homebrew and House Rules

Hi, I wanted to make a prestige class for multiclass wizards and sorcerers.

I want it to be as simple as possible:
Prerequisites wiz 2 and sorc 3 (how to make this with skills and such is quite irrelevant I think) Why? so at lvl 20 he can have lvl 9 spells.

What it would get is, 2 skills like wizard, d6 hp etc, every lvl +1 casterlvl for both classes, and he gets bloodline and focused school bonuses as prestigeclass+according baseclass, and a full-lvl familiar or bond.

My guestion now, is this too powerfull? I mean he looses casterlvl for both spellcasting abilities, and a spelllvl.

I don't need any advice on additional flashy abilities like the theurge has, just plain too powerful, lower a specific lvl or highen a requirement or something, thanks.

Ultimate Magus, in the Complete Arcane is what you are looking for.

Ok, so you want him to get the full progression of both classes? I don't like it. A set of unique abilities such as that of the Ultimate Magus (or however the 3.5 class was called) would work much better than just slapping the regular abilities of the two classes together.

At first glance, he does appear to be a bit too powerful, but to use as a good guideline, may I recommend the Ultimate Magus from Complete Mage?

Edit: Double ninja'd. That's a first.

okay, thanks everyone, I guessed he was a bit too powerful, but tought that running around with only lvl 1 spells for 5 lvls would make that ok.

Suggestions on powering him down by lowering his effective lvl for bloodline and focused school powers are still welcomed.

Ultimate Magus isn't quite what I seek, he's limited to 10 lvls, quite hard to build the rest, and never reaching lvl 9 spells might be okay if you mix divine and arcane spells, but I think it's a bit harsh for arcane only.

Giving up power at low level and compensating it with being very powerful at high level is a trap WotC has made far too many times. For games that never reach the higher levels, it's useless, and for those that do, the character takes the spotlight from the other characters sooner or later.

I'd much rather see a prestige class that had wholly unique abilities and that DIDN'T have so bad requirements. Having only 1st level spells at level 5 will mean the player has no fun at level 5, and having too many 9th level at 20 will mean the other players aren't having fun at level 20.

I'd make it something like this:

Prerequisites: Spellcraft 5 ranks, ability to cast 2nd level arcane spells, caster level 1+ in at least two arcane caster classes.

+1 caster progression per level.

Unique abilities that are based on having power from different sources and thus better understanding how magic works.

I could even see it as a feat chain, or even a single feat.

Combination Magic
Prerequisites Caster level 1+ in at least two different classes.
Benefit Choose a spellcasting class you have levels in. When calculating your caster progression for this class, you may add a bonus to your spellcasting progression equal to half your caster level for all other spellcasting classes you posses, up to a maximum bonus equal to your caster level in the chosen class.
special You may take this feat several times. It's bonus do not stack. Every time you take this feat, pick a new class which it applies to.

So for two feats, a Wizard 8/Sorcerer 6 can cast spells as an 11th level wizard and a 10th level sorcerer. A Wizard 16/Sorcerer 2 with both feats would cast spells as a Wizard 17/Sorcerer 4.

That's pretty much the point of a prestige class that combines too class attributes. Ultimately, the Ultimage magus gets to be a decent wizard combined with a moderate sorcerer instead of being a top-notch wizard by level 20. That gives him a huge number of lower level spells, less top level spells. If he had top-notch at both, it certainly wouldn't be balanced.
