Hey all! I just got back from Dragon*Con and my wife and sister-in-law are already talking costume options for next year; they are each wanting to go to next year's Con as representations of their current Pathfinder characters, a Tiefling rogue and an Aasimar bard. My wife is already getting her costume put together, wanting to dress as Sorcha for Halloween this year.
Anyway, long story short, I was thinking about going as an Alchemist. Problem is, whenever I think of an Alchemist, Damiel is the first thing that pops into my mind, but I don't want to go as the iconic. I was hoping to get some costume ideas and input from my fellow Paizonians, since you guys are all so awesome.
Any costuming advice that you guys can give is greatly appreciated, but the main things that I'd be looking for are the kinds of things an alchemist would store his unguents in: potion bottles, test tubes, flasks, etc. I thought about getting some kind of leather duster similar to Damiel's but those kinds of things tend to be really expensive and I was hoping to find a vest or tunic that would be a good alternative. Again, though, I'd really appreciate any advice you guys can give. Thanks!

Dollar stores are a great place to find odd/cool glass bottles. For tubes, I don't know if you're a smoker or not (I'm not) but a few years ago when I worked at a gas station, you could find a particular brand of cigar that came in glass tubes that we sold for $.99. Those tubes made great vials.
Pouches are easy to make with a rectangle of cloth, fold in half, sew up the sides, punch a few holes and run some string/twine/leather lacing through, and voila you have a pouch. Or take a circle of cloth, punch holes around the edge and lace those for a different pouch.
As for a coat, try checking out thrift stores. I've found a few good (london fog) trenchcoats from goodwill and salvation army stores for less than $10, you might just find a coat there that will work.
If you're looking for a cool belt or something similar, check out the women's section of stores. They usually have some cool leather belts with metal studs/fittings on them that would work for a fantasy character.
I'd also try to be on the lookout for a good set of gloves. Something that look like dish washing gloves, I'd imagine in black or brown if you can find them.
You might find some decent goggles on clearance right now. Look at the pool/swimming section of stores, there might be some that might work.

from a safety standpoint, be careful with the glass vials and such, especially with a long day at a con. Something I was thinking is if you can get your hands on a bunch of preforms (the plastic molded intermediary piece prior to being blow molded into 2 liter bottles, etc), those might be more durable and still look like a glass vial. Though the threading on the open end might throw it off...
