The Dungeon Masters

Ok so has anyone seen this? Opinions?

Liberty's Edge

I think it's hilarious, but then I tend to really enjoy all these D&D mocumentaries. You can get this film for $15 at iTunes. Monster Camp is another good one.

Rented it from itunes. Its watchable. There's a lot of cringe-inducing antics from the three subjects (all of which I would consider pretty far out on the loon spectrum). However, I know at least the drow girl has said that the filmmakers took a lot of stuff out of context or continually asked her to dress up in her drow makeup. So the perspective that is given is dubious.
The filmmakers despite some lip service do seem to take a derisive tone but given the three subjects that may not be avoidable.

Oh and unless I missed something this isn't a mockumentary (in that a script and characters are developed by actors and then staged in a documentary style a la Spinal Tap). From what I understood these are real people.

Alrigty then, spent the night watching The Dungeon Masters and Monster Camp.

Gotta say I was expecting more out of Dungeon Masters. It was alright, but dragged heavily at times.

Spoiler:
Could have gone my WHOLE life with out the naked DM and his story telling

Now Monster Camp, available on Netflix's Instant Queue, was a hoot. It was fun watching them run around and hit each other with boffers. Plus listening to some of their reasons behind playing made me laugh.

I really thought it was staged... If not, then the film does a lot to perpetuate negative stereotypes. Viewed as comedy, it comes off as pretty clever.

I've never watched the credits, but I'm pretty sure the USAF would never have allowed cameras into a real formation and staff meeting, especially not for an rpg documentary.

I agree, Monster Camp is much better. I actually wouldn't mind volunteering for the staff the next time I'm stationed at Lewis.

I found this was woatchable, but horrible. I fould the people to be depressing, and frankly I couldn't empathise with any of them at all.

I thought the guy and his book/TV angle was probably the pesron I felt most sypmathy for, but that chick was as crazy as a bum full of skittles.

I'm just watching Dungeon Masters and wow. I can't help but think, am I and my gaming group the odd ones? We're all normal 30+ year old professional guys with kids and families and not at all dysfunctional depressing people who scare me. I guess a documentary about normal people won't sell.

Points in the movie:
-Dark elf girl needs to breathe in deeply and stop serial dating. She needs to be single for a while.
-Military guy needs to apologize to his ex's kids for abandoning them without so much as a goodbye. That's some heavy existential shite there.
- Creative writer guy... He was the most sympathetic, but still, rejection sucks, man.

Oy...

Grand Lodge

I thought the movie was funny enough to recommend to my group to watch since one of our old players is just like the guy that was writing the book. He's since lost his house, moved in with someone none of us know, and we've all gladly not invited him back, even after some of us have gamed with him for nearly 20 years.

No mate, we are the same sort of guys, normal, professionals, etc.

Agree with all of the above 100%.

That Military guy also needs to start getting honest with himself about sexuality (imo).

Same here and I must say I feel that I just can't recommend it to non-gamer friends without freaking them out!

Nothing funny in anything I saw in that one.

IMHO to.

Oh and the dark elf chick was cute when in make up.
Out of it...not so much.

True, but I kept thinking to myself "Who has to clean that sink out after she washes it all off?" Sad, but true.

James Martin wrote:

Hey I thought that as well... in between noticing the general mess it created on her pillows, towels etc etc.

Pretty bad (or pretty modern!?) when guys are noticing the sink and how dirty it is.

Started watching this on the nifty Hulu Plus free trial week going on, and have just shut it off halfway through.

This thing is just depressing.

Maybe I'm just a jerk, but it seems like they sought out to find people to just make the hobby look bad.

Drow chick? Needs to stop being co-dependent and stop ruining hotel rooms. That stupid body-paint-demolition of the sink and bed? That should be a crime.

Nudist GM? Do people really have obnoxious DMs like this guy?

Writer? This guy needs to man up and stop living off of his wife. Holy cow, he's honestly the worst of the bunch - at least the others have jobs. I only have seen half of the movie so far, but every time he comes on camera, we find out more and more what a slacker he is - turns out his wife is actually the manager of the apartment complex, AND she's holding down an outside job? While he what? Plays video games and prioritizes his book over actually contributing to his family?

Gah.

I really don't know if I can turn this back on and watch the rest.

Does it get any better? Is there some kind of "Get a life!" intervention for these people?

Nope. It just continues. It's pretty frightening, but I don't know; I don't think a documentary about three people who play a game, have fun and then live normal lives is considered "sexy" enough. They need the freaks. And they found them.

Heh...You know, I read the horror stories, but nothing really drives it home until you see it "for real", as it was.

If that guy was my only option for gaming, I'd sell my books.

In fairness I have only come across one real nightmare GM, but the tale of whackiness is just beyond actual belief. The guy was a headcase. Sadly we didn't spot the true depth of his slide til it had really hit the the pits.

Okay, to balance out the horror of Dungeon Masters, may I present Enter the Dragon, a short documentary on role-playing that I found excellent and informative.

Ahhh warm people having fun, what a nice counterpoint. That girl will bever be single.

Thanks for posting!

Good video, and I think a far better representation of gamers as a whole - down to earth and, ultimately, sane.

Sovereign Court

I wish they would have focused on some more socially competent people. The just want to make a film to show a bunch of losers living in a fantasy world.

That was awesome. It was a fun. Not one part was cringe worthy or disturbing. Just normal people, sitting around the table playing some D&D.

I own the movie, and it was a mistake to have purchased it.

It was on-sale at a going out of business video store. I saw the title and thought, "how can I go wrong ...?"

:-(

It is a real-world depiction of several fanatical game players whose lives fall completely apart, and the film focuses on their horrid spirals into gaming madness.

No, this is not a remake of "mazes and monsters." This is an actual docu-drama.

*ugh*

While I believe the stories, I do not feel that the folks portrayed in the movie represent typical gamers. Additionally, just because it talks about gaming, please don't assume as I foolishly did that it will be an interesting movie. It was kind of like watching a docu-drama about a clutch of lepers, slowing wasting away before your very eyes. (Well, I guess, to each his own. If you were actually excited about the prospect of watching a clutch of lepers then you might really enjoy this film. Sorry to pre-judge.)

The movie reflects very, very poorly on the gaming community.

Why don't they do a movie about Vin D. and his gaming experiences or the young princes of the UK who used to have the Archbishop GMing for them? Or, even Al Gore, who was an avid gamer in his college days?

No, no, it gets worse.

Just remember ... whatever time you spend watching this movie is time that you will never get back. Never get back ...

Ahhhhhhhhhh ...

Nothing funny in anything I saw in that one.

I wrote a bummer story as a cathartic experience years ago after a 22 year old friend of mine died of aggressive tongue cancer called the Line.

This movie reminded me of the experiences that led to writing the story.

Jon left behind a wonderful, young wife behind. I had never met her before Jon's funeral. She had picked up on Jon's mannerisms and shared Jon's stories of the campaign at the funeral and the memorial service. She quoted events from the gaming campaign with remarkable clarity.

It was both amazing how much our shared campaign had meant to Jon at a core, core level, and it was so utterly sad that someone as talented and good hearted as Jon was gone. The void for his widow was palpable.

at the point in my marriage where my wife asks me what i do on Saturday night i told her specifically told her not to watch dungeon masters because, i want to still have her respect me in the morning and not freak out and assume i dress like a Drow overweight prostitute and do all sorts of strange things. i had her watch that community episode instead

Of course if the genders were reversed no one would bat an eye. Wife living off her husband's work while focusing on her novel rather than getting a job? Move along, nothing to see here...

As for the movie, I thought it was a pretty standard hit piece on gamers. Moral of the story: Hah hah, gamers are losers. Let's point at them and laugh.

No, she'd still be a loser, we'd just get lambasted for being sexist when calling her out.

Who cares about 'what if'?

What we DO have is a guy being a bum. He should man up and get a job and stop being such a pathetic sponge.

Well, I'm being sarcastically serious.

Scott Corum, the deadbeat in "The Dungeon Masters" is the designer/publisher of that pile of crap.

I'm struggling here. On one hand I'd really like to give him a credit for getting off his a$$ long enough to actually do something, but the something he did when he did is just... a negative.

Wow.

Actually.

He's gone down a few steps in my eyes.

Have either of you actually played Hot Chicks? I haven't (never even heard of it before this thread), but all of the reviews I've read are pretty positive. Seems to have decent mechanics with some interesting meta-game elements. The worst things I can find anyone saying is that the setting/concept is derivative of Macho Women With Guns.

Sadly*, I've been unable to find anyone willing to play.

I've gone over the PDF and its system, and I'm not impressed. Someone took the D20 system and changed it for the sake of change.

There's nothing new or unique about it. It's a vessel to sell crappy 3D art and a bunch of in-jokes.

*(Not really)

Yeah really?

Well there was a movie called Pirates that was lauded as a great film by thousands of people and took home a swag of awards:

AVN Awards:

Best Video Feature
Best DVD
Best Director - Video (Joone)
Best Actress - Video (Janine Lindemulder)
Best High-Definition Production
Best All-Girl Sex Scene - Video (Janine Lindemulder and Jesse Jane)
Best Special Effects
Best Actor - Video (Evan Stone)
Best Music
Best Supporting Actor - Video (Tommy Gunn)
Best On-Line Marketing Campaign

XRCO awards:

Best Release (2005)
Epic (2005)

Adult DVD Empire Awards:

2005 Editor's Choice
2005 Best Overall DVD
2005 Best DVD Menu Design
2005 Best DVD Video Quality
2005 Best DVD Audio Quality
2005 Viewer's Choice

I reckon 'Hot Chicks' is about the same level of high brow entertainment and probablylauded for the same reason.
